Fade to Black

Fade to Black

Earth’s destruction hinges on a young illusionist in new book

Urban fantasy and science fiction meet in Sue Duff’s premier novel of five-book series

LITTLETON, Co.–When a young illusionist, foreseen to bring about Earth’s salvation, fails to develop those prophesied powers, he’ll do what he must to escape his cruel guardians and stop the world from falling to a mysterious enemy. Sue Duff’s premier novel, Fade to Black, winds a tale of self-resilience and wonder at the world on a backdrop of urban fantasy and science fiction. In Fade to Black, Ian Black is guarded by the Weir, a race of magical beings who struggle to prevent the planet from self-destructing during a time that natural disasters are on the rise in frequency and intensity. In a desperate move, the Weir elders torture Ian to force his powers to arrive, prompting Ian to abandon his people to hide among humans. He soon uncovers, along with curious college student Rayne Bevan, a mysterious enemy behind the Weir’s raging civil war and Ian races to stop the lethal saboteur before launching Armageddon.

My Review:

The Weir are a race of people that have been protecting the world. But a split in the people have some using their abilities/magic for personal gain and letting the world destroy itself, the Duach, and other half still fighting to keep the world whole, the Pur. This civil war is coming to a head with a prophecy about a young Weir having all the powers of the Earth.

Enter Ian, a magician that is trying to help keep the Earth going and save those humans that he has visions about. One of those humans is Rayne, he saves her from an assault but ends up learning that she is a reporter intent on finding out his secrets. Rayne gets Ian exposed to the Duach. Ian struggles to keep Rayne and his friends safe and find the traitor sabotaging everything.

I liked this book. There is a great story and really good characters. I admit that I was a little lost until somewhere between 1/3 and ½ of the book until you find out who the Weir are. After that the story took off with lots of action. I couldn’t help but like Ian. But I admit that I liked Patrick the best. He has such snark and although he is looked at as just a human he is such a great part of the story.

This is a great story and start to a series. I think if you like the fantasy/science fiction genera you will really like this. Now I can’t wait to read book 2.

I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Sue_DuffSue Duff

As a fan of both fantasy and sci-fi, Duff blended the two genres into a story where even the magical beings needed help from science. She relied on astrophysics as a basis to the Weir’s powers, but also hopes readers accept that science can’t explain everything.

“I’m a natural sciences nerd, which comes in handy when I research everything,” Duff said, but, “Embrace the wonders and mysteries in the universe.”

Fade to Black is the first installment in The Weir Chronicles, a planned five-book mainstream speculative fiction series. It was a finalist in the Colorado Gold Writing Contest through Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers in 2011.

When not saving the world one page at a time, Duff works as a speech therapist. She enjoys taking her octogenarian dachshund for strolls and stretching her creative juices in the kitchen. A Colorado transplant, she savors the incredible seasons, but appreciates that Mother Nature spares her from shoveling the driveway, too often.

Sleeping with the Crawfish (Andy Broussard/Kit Franklyn Mystery – 6) by Don Donaldson

5 stars

(Excerpt from Goodreads) When a fresh cadaver is delivered to his lab, forensic pathologist Andy Broussard discovers that the deceased is a convict supposedly serving time in the Louisiana state prison — and prison officials claim that the man is still in his cell. Broussard enlists the help of his former colleague Kit Franklyn to discover the truth behind the bizarre turn of events. Kit travels up to the prison to photograph and fingerprint the convict. However, upon her arrival the prison officials claim that the convict in question died during the night and was cremated immediately. Meanwhile, Broussard follows another lead and finds himself drawn into a sinister murder plot. Now, in order to survive, Broussard must quickly determine how these events are connected.

Kit is having a hard time after her kidnapping (Louisiana Fever). She thinks she is a total failure and has quit police work to help out in an art gallery. Andy misses Kit dearly but can’t figure out how to tell her how he feels. When a dead body appears on his table that is supposed to be in the Louisiana state prison, Andy sends Kit to take fingerprints.

When Kit arrives in this small town, things seem amiss. She learns that the prisoner died the night before and that they all ready cremated the body. But things take a turn for the worse when, on her way home, Kit’s car mysteriously won’t start, then she is run off the road and nearly killed.

When the governor steps comes to tell Andy and Kit that they are concerned about a medical research facility but the prison, Kit volunteers to go under cover to try to find out what is really going on. But people are still suspicious and she finds herself in another brush with death.

So, you know that I am a huge fan of Don Donaldson’s books. You get sucked in and can’t turn the pages fast enough to find out what is going to happen next. My heart broke for Kit, she is still suffering from the kidnapping and so unsure of herself. But I also wanted to kick Andy in the butt for being so difficult.

This was a great mystery. I knew something was up and thought I knew, but I was completely wrong. There are some good plot twists and lots of chances for Kit to get herself in trouble. This is series that you HAVE to read. You won’t be sorry.

Venture Unleashed (The Venture Books – 2) by RH Russell

5 stars

(Excerpt from Goodreads) In Venture Unleashed, the second novel in the Venture series, Venture Delving leaves his home in Twin Rivers to train at the renowned Champions Center, in pursuit of his dream to escape his bonded class by becoming a champion fighter. There, Venture meets two men who hold the title he longs to claim himself one day—Champion of All Richland. But a violent encounter with one of them nearly ends his life and destroys his dreams.

Thrust into the center of growing political turmoil and confronted with choices he never imagined he’d have to make, Venture must find a way to keep his hope and his love for Jade, his master’s daughter, alive. Thanks to the privileged Crested warrior class who’d rather see him die than live his dream, the worst nightmares of Venture’s past and his future are about to follow him onto the mat as he fights the match of his life.

Venture has won the chance to train at the Champions Center, but it is going to be one of the toughest experiences he has faced yet. He is still bonded and looked down because of that. Also, this is the proverbial school of hard knocks. He will be beaten, and beaten badly as he trains. He is going to have to learn to work through the pain and doubts of if he really wants to be a champion, free, and able to be with Jade.

Jade is supposed to be learning how to fit into her social status and all the proper things that is expected from her. But she doesn’t really want anything except Venture. She also doesn’t understand why he is fighting and become spiteful. This just tears up Venture more because he starts to question all the training, fighting and abuse, is it really worth all this to reach his goals.

I have to say that this is one of my favorite series. I love the message of setting your goals and fighting to get to them, both literally and figuratively. It can be hard to read some of the fights but it’s very true. You have to fight through the pain, wanting to give up, and others doing everything they can to try to tell you to quit, give up, and not reach your dreams, very inspirational.

This is a great story. Be sure to read Venture Untamed, the first book in the series. Now I’m off to tackle Venture Unbroken, book 3.

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Amazon Burning

Amazon Burning by Victoria Griffith

4 stars

(Excerpt from Goodreads) When 22-year-old aspiring journalist, Emma Cohen, is forced to flee the comforts of her NYU student life, she maneuvers an internship from her father at his newspaper in Rio de Janeiro. There, Emma is immediately swept into a major news story–and a life-threatening situation–when a famous jungle environmentalist, Milton Silva, is mysteriously murdered. Emma must now enter the Amazon rainforest with her father to investigate; both awed by the enormity and beauty of the Amazon, and appalled by its reckless destruction. Not only will Emma have to brave the primal world of the Amazon, she must fight to survive the kidnappers, villains, corrupt activists, and indigenous tribes that lay in wait along the ever-twisting trail of the murder case. Stretched to the brink, it s up to Emma, her father and the dreamy news photographer, Jimmy, to unravel the mystery and live to tell the tale.

Emma has had some trouble at NYU and has to leave. She decides to go to Rio de Janeiro and intern with her father at his newspaper. While there, environmentalist Milton Silva is murdered and Emma travels to the Amazon with Jimmy to figure out who did it. Along the way, Emma gets mixed up with kidnappers, indigenous tribes, trafficking exotic animals, and other adventures.

I liked the mystery of who killed Milton Silva. There were some good red herrings that kept me guessing until the end about who killed him. I do like following Emma and watching her mature throughout the story. It was a great way to portray a lead character, especially at an age that they are just learning who they really are.

I kind of was disbelieving about the legal issue Emma left NYU for. If it was that serious I doubt she would have been allowed to just leave the country. The other thing was I had never heard of NA. I figured this was a YA book. It’s not that I’m a prude, it was just unexpected.

Over all I really liked this story. It has a great mystery and is a good coming of age book. This would be a great story for those that like contemporary romances with some mystery.

Primal Creatures (French Quarter Mystery – 3) by Eric Wilder

4 stars

(Excerpt from Goodreads) Though only forty miles south of New Orleans, Goose Island may as well be in another world. Five feet out of the shallow waters of south Louisiana’s wetlands, the secluded island is home of the Tracists Monastery. It’s also a resort frequented by actors, screenwriters, and powerful people in the burgeoning Louisiana film industry. When a heinous death occurs on the island, a movie producer hires Wyatt Thomas, the French Quarter’s favorite sleuth, to find out whom or what killed the victim. Was it wild dogs or a rougarou (Cajun werewolf) as the local voodoo woman tells Wyatt? His own life threatened, he must first survive the killer (or maybe killers), and the deadly hurricane taking direct aim at the monastery. Primal Creatures is the third novel in the Wyatt Thomas French Quarter Mystery Series that includes Big Easy, and City of Spirits.

Goose Island is in Louisiana’s bayou. It is an island that has the Tracists Monastery and a resort for movie stars and producers. While on a stay, movie star Rance Parker dies. At first it sounds like she has had a heart attack. But Wyatt Thomas is called in for further investigation when it is learned that she was torn limb from limb.

Having some experience with the occult, Wyatt has an advantage to figuring out what really happened to Rance. After talking to the monks, he hears about the rougarou, a Cajun werewolf. He doesn’t really believe them to be real until he takes shelter at a voodoo village and learns the truth. Now he has to stay alive as a hurricane is planning on hitting Goose Island.

I have not read Big Easy or City of Spirits so I was hesitant to read Primal Creatures. This book could be a stand alone novel. It was a great story with lots of detail. I loved how Wyatt could tell that something was amiss but just couldn’t put his finger on it. But when things start coming to the light, that’s when the book starts taking off at a break neck pace.

This is a great mystery. I have added Eric Wilder to my list of great mystery authors and I will definitely be getting the other books in this series. This is one author that you don’t want to miss.

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Runaway Release Day

Recently I reviewed Reveal by Brina Courtney. GREAT story, make sure to check out my review here. Well, I was asked to post about Brina’s new book Runaway. This looks like a great book. I can’t wait to get a copy. Check it out then go purchase it with the links below.

Runaway (Camryn Cruise #1) by Brina Courtney

Camryn Cruise is not human. But she doesn’t know what she is. Not yet.

The world is falling apart and her only escape is Camp Silverlake where she frequently stayed as a child. But Camryn’s summers weren’t filled with crafting and swimming, they were spent learning combat skills and how to protect herself from the outside world.

Now she must return to Camp Silverlake to learn the truth, about who she is and she’ll discover the secret hidden within her blood. A secret that could save them all.

My Review:

It’s starts as a typical night as Camryn spends time with her best friend Kiley. But they have this creepy feeling that they are being watched. Then on the way home they see cars abandoned by the side of the road and little traffic.

When Camryn gets home she gets a huge surprise. A disease from Africa called Tilerrea has now become a pandemic. The illness is transferred through touch and once contaminated; the person has no chance of recovery. Camryn has to take Kiley and go to the summer camp Silverlake. Both girls are having a hard time accepting this but get to experience it first hand.

I loved this story. It’s short and I can’t wait to find out what happens next. I’m very intrigued with her background and I can’t wait to see what happens to Kiley. This is a great story that you will want to add to your young adult list.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

seduction_book_banner2Today I have the pleasure of being part of the Saylor Storm Tour for Sue’s Seduction, book 1 in the Sue Trilogy. Book s, Sue’s Rapture has just been released. It’s a great series that you need to add to your TBR list.

Her newfound tender age brings opportunities, lovers and tragedy. Sue’s youthful path takes her on a journey that she never could have imagined and catastrophe brings sobering consequences. Compassionate attorney, Roger Grayson, enters her life and saves the day. In the end does Susan choose youth or the promise of love?

Instantly she is transformed into a 20 year-old woman. Of course she is going to go out and live her life to its fullest. But things are going to take a surprising turn and not always have results that are expected.

I really liked this story. I have looked back at things in my past and thing, “If I only knew then what I know now…” This is one of those stories. About Saylor Storm

Reality becomes fantasy, or is it that imagination turns into real life experience? Saylor Storm is fascinated by how frequently the line between reality and fantasy crosses in her writing practice. She feels that writing romance novels is an astonishing way to play with something from real life and turning into something fun, playful and perhaps a bit twisted.

Her characters all experience real life joy and pain, reinvention, survival and victory. They share the process of evolution and expansion. The places in her stories take place where she has lived or visited, from the beaches of Malibu to the islands in Fiji and destinations in between, including the monastery in her novel, “Dr. Selfish.”

Saylor’s stories reflect her many personal interests including fitness, wine, healthy foods. She’s intrigued by the spiritual world and that of metaphysics. Love and passion are at the root of her tales, after all isn’t that what life is all about? She hopes the reader is as entertained reading her books as she is writing them. Viva la passion!

Saylor enjoys being an active member of the Romance Writers of America. She currently lives in Lake Tahoe and one of her many passions is hiking the nationally known Tahoe Rim Trail. Readers can enjoy fabulous photos of her treks posted on her Facebook page, Saylor Storm.
