(Excerpt from Goodreads) In Eighth Century Europe the people fear vampires.
What do vampires fear?
Alexander Damascus is the last Neuri, a Spartan-like tribe bred to hunt and destroy the undead. With his partner Demitra, they track Queen Adrielle. She has organized the vampire clans into an army for expanding her empire.
Learning that Adrielle’s enforcer, Verucious, has acquired fragments of an ancient segmented map the Vatican dispatches its own hunters to reinforce Alexander against Verucious and his Dark Riders.
These Vatican mercenaries have their own checkered tales and grounds for hating Verucious and his kind. Their handler, Cicero, their only contact to the powers above, quietly conceals a piece of the arcane map.
Alexander, ever the lone wolf, becomes frustrated, held down by his new formed alliance. Believing them to be lambs for the slaughter, he soon realizes that Adrielle has far greater numbers than he had assumed and by enlisting the aid of Eden, a Neuri turned and Alexander’s ex-lover, have gained all but one part of the map. Cicero guards this to his death and its destruction.
The map lost. Adrielle sets her sights on her new prize, Alexander. He can strengthen her armies. Alexander was born a werewolf, the seed of all vampire blood. The Neuri sworn to hunt those spawned from the civil war they waged.
Ambushed by the Dark Riders, Alexander becomes Verucious’ trophy but not before Demitra and the mercenaries are defeated, left to turn.
Taken to Adrielle’s fortress, Alexander, beaten and tortured, awaits his induction ceremony. However, through Eden’s treachery he gains his freedom and takes his revenge.
Alexander and Demitra are vampire hunters. But they are not just killing the vampires; they are trying to keep the vampires from resurrecting the King. They meet up with a group of men that kill vampires and collect the bounty on the heads. There is a map to the Kings location that is tattooed on the back of six priests. To keep the vampires from getting it, Alexander and the rest have to protect the map. But Alexander is more than just a vampire hunter; he is the last of his kind. He tells the men his is fighting with his past. Together they need to stop the vampires.
Although the description of the book seems jumbles the book is really good. Alexander and Demitra work together to kill off vampires and keep them from resurrecting the King. It was interesting with the map tattooed on the priests backs and how the six part ends. I really liked Alexander’s past. That was an interesting twist on werewolves. I also liked the fight sequences. They were well done and flowed really well.
My only complaint, if you could call it that, was the ending. I did like it ended but I didn’t like the big jump. I admit it threw me off for a couple minutes. But it was a good ending, definitely lead into another book.
I really like this book and think those that like paranormal stories will like this one too. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.
