Somebody I Used to Know by David Bell

4 stars

(Excerpt from Goodreads) When Nick Hansen sees the young woman at the grocery store, his heart stops. She is the spitting image of his college girlfriend, Marissa Minor, who died in a campus house fire twenty years earlier. But when Nick tries to speak to her, she acts skittish and rushes off.

The next morning the police arrive at Nick’s house and show him a photo of the woman from the store. She’s been found dead, murdered in a local motel, with Nick’s name and address on a piece of paper in her pocket.

Convinced there’s a connection between the two women, Nick enlists the help of his college friend Laurel Davidson to investigate the events leading up to the night of Marissa’s death. But the young woman’s murder is only the beginning…and the truths Nick uncovers may make him wish he never doubted the lies.

Nick is a newly divorced, social worker. He has a great handle on real tough situations but has no real growth where he is at. He does try to keep in touch with his step-son. But he basically lives alone, with his dog, pining about his first true love Marissa. One day he goes to the grocery store and runs into a girl that looks just like Marissa. It can’t be her, her died years ago in a house fire.

The next day the cops list his as the number one suspect in this girl’s death. Nick was the last person to see her alive and she had a note with his address in her hand when she was found. Deciding to find out what really happened all those years ago when Marissa was supposed to have died; Nick gets together with Laurel, a friend from college. They then start looking into the past, but things are going to change and Nick may not want to find out what really happened.

I couldn’t wait to start reading this book. I was instantly interested in what happened. Nick was a great character. I did feel bad for him, he was just existing without really going out and living his life. There were a lot of twists and turns and every time I thought I had it figured out we were off in another direction.

I have not read other books by David Bell but after reading Someone I Used to Know I will definitely be looking into reading others by him. If you are looking for a really good thriller make sure to add this to your list.

I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
