The Killing Kind by Chris Holm
(Excerpt from Goodreads) A hitman who only kills other hitmen winds up a target himself.
Michael Hendricks kills people for money. That aside, he’s not so bad a guy.
Once a covert operative for a false-flag unit of the US military, Hendricks was presumed dead after a mission in Afghanistan went sideways. He left behind his old life–and beloved fiancée–and set out on a path of redemption…or perhaps one of willful self-destruction.
Now Hendricks makes his living as a hitman entrepreneur of sorts–he only hits other hitmen. For ten times the price on your head, he’ll make sure whoever’s coming to kill you winds up in the ground instead. Not a bad way for a guy with his skill-set to make a living–but a great way to make himself a target.
My Review
4 stars
Michael Hendricks is a former special ops soldier. He was used to killing select targets for the US military. But he was becoming disillusioned when his entire group was killed. He decided to stay dead leaving those he loved behind. He then started hunting the killers. He would find out who has a contract on their lives and offer them the opportunity to buy out of that death and he would kill the assassin.
But Michael is going to find himself in the middle of a war. Someone has put a hit on him. Engelmann has been called on to take care of Michael. Then there is Charlie, she is a FBI agent that has taken an interest to Michael and wants to stop him herself. The question is who is going to come out of this fight alive.
I admit that this book started out a little slow. But I stuck with it and am glad I did. You can’t help but feel for Michael. He is wrapped up in so much guilt from the loss of his team to his missions and such. I loved how he started going after other killers. It’s one heck of a way to make money using the skills he has while not targeting innocents.
There is plenty of action and thrills as Michael fights for his life with Engelmann. Then you have Charlie who is trying to stop both. If you like action thrillers this is one book that you don’t want to miss. I will definitely be looking for other books by Chris Holm.
