Dark Matter

Dark Matter (Steve Nastos – 2) by RD Cain

(Excerpt from Goodreads) After being recently cleared of murder charges, the disgraced and out-of-work police detective Steve Nastos reluctantly teams with his brash and similarly disgraced lawyer Kevin Carscadden for a paycheck. Nastos—who built his career on channeling the shadowy instincts within him to hunt dangerous predators—takes on a mission to track the whereabouts of Lindsay Bannerman, a troubled teen who is missing from her wealthy adoptive home. The trail Nastos and his lawyer pick up is one with a sadistic abuser on the other end and littered with lies, deceptions, and lifeless bodies. Torn between spiteful former colleagues—detectives who maintain Nastos belongs in prison for homicide—a wife who wants her husband to finally liberate himself from the darkness that fuels him, and the promise he made to a stranger to find Lindsay, the search is a race against time before everything vanishes forever into the dark matter.

My Review

4 stars

Steve Nastos has had a rough go lately. He has lost his job as a police office. He has been working as a private investigator with an old friend but his wife keeps hounding him to retire. Then Steve is asked to look into the disappearance of wealthy girl Lindsay Bannerman. Against his better judgment, Steve agrees. But this case is going to be hard when Steve learns that Lindsay is adopted and has a history with undesirable people making the suspect list increase dramatically.

This story bounces between several different points of view, from Steve to Lindsay to the killer and others in between which really kept the story moving. Steve is one of those people that move in the grey of right and wrong. He does things that many might consider excessive but he is someone that knows what needs to be done, pretty or not. And with these killers he is going to need every bit of that skill.

I have not read Cherry Beach Express, the first book in the series but that has not affected reading Dark Matter. The killer is very twisted and gets what he deserves. I really liked this dark thriller and if this is the kind of books that you like I recommend you get your copy of Dark Matters today.

I received Dark Matter for free from the author, a long time ago, in exchange for an honest review.

Released (The Eternal Balance – 3) by Jus Accardo

(Excerpt from Goodreads) Jax Flynn’s life just went from bad to worse. He was already sharing his body with a demon named Azirak, but after killing its mate… Well, shit got real. Now the demon has taken control of Jax’s body and everything he cares for is at stake, including Samantha, the girl he loves. Yeah, that’s not going to happen. It’s time Jax showed everyone what he was really made of.

JUS ACCARDO spent her childhood reading and learning to cook. Determined to follow in her grandfather’s footsteps as a chef, she applied and was accepted to the Culinary Institute of America. But at the last minute, she realized her true path lay with fiction, not food.

Jus is the bestselling author of the popular Denazen series from Entangled publishing, as well as the Darker Agency series, and the New Adult series, The Eternal Balance. A native New Yorker, she lives in the middle of nowhere with her husband, three dogs, and sometimes guard bear, Oswald.

“We need to get something straight,” Sam said, changing lanes to pass the car in front of us. “That shit you pulled back at Kelly’s? That can’t happen again.” Irritation surged in Azi, but more than that, confusion. It genuinely didn’t understand what she was pissed about. “You chastise me for protecting you?”

“Damn right,” she snapped. “Because no matter what you say, that’s Jax’s body you’re temporarily squatting in. He has to live with the fallout after I find a way to evict your ass. Besides, that’s not what that was all about anyway.”

“Oh?” The demon’s irritation turned to amusement. It didn’t bother correcting her on the temporarily bit. Azi had me locked down tight and wasn’t the least bit concerned about her—or me—turning the tables. And even though I had complete faith in Sam—if there was a way to fix this, she’d find it—even I had to admit I was pretty much fucked.

“You’re the equivalent of a demonic spoiled brat. Any time you don’t get what you want, you throw a fit. That doesn’t work in this world, buddy. You need a little more self-control if you want to pretend to be a real boy.”

I worried the demon’s temper would flare, but instead of anger, I felt a swell of admiration from it. “You know what I am,” Azi said. It shifted around in the seat so that I was facing her. “You know what I am capable of. And yet you still speak to me as you would a lowly human?”

“Lowly human?” She shook her head and stomped on the gas. Kelly’s Explorer surged forward. I cringed internally. I’d seen Sam drive angry. It wasn’t a pretty sight. “No, no. You’re totally misunderstanding me. I’m speaking to you as I would an asshat.”

My Review

5 stars

Jax is sharing his body with the demon Azirak. But Az is mad at Jax for killing his mate and has taken control of Jax’s body. Jax is watching everything happen but has no way to do anything. And the longer that Az is in control the less Jax will be until he disappears. Both Az and Jaz love Sam and I like how Az lets Jax and Sam be together before disappears.

I have not read the other books in this series and I think that would make a difference. But I did catch on to the story and couldn’t turn pages fast enough to find out what happens next. I felt for Sam. Here is hates Az but sees how in his way he loves her too and plans to keep her safe. Jax is trying everything to keep from disappearing and even fights against the control of Az. It’s heartbreaking to watch Jax and Sam together when Az releases control for a little bit.

This is a great story with lots of action and emotion. Az may be a demon but he clearly is a difference class of demon. I think this is a great story and now I want to read the other books in the series to find out what happened.

Dreamwalker (Dreamwalker – 1) by CS Friedman

(Excerpt from Goodreads) All her life Jessica Drake has dreamed of other worlds, some of them similar to her own, others disturbingly alien. She never shares the details with anyone, save her younger brother Tommy, a compulsive gamer who incorporates some aspects of Jessica’s dreams into his games. But now someone is asking about those dreams…and about her. A strange woman has been watching her house. A visitor to her school attempts to take possession of her dream-inspired artwork.

As she begins to search for answers it becomes clear that whoever is watching her does not want her to learn the truth. One night her house catches on fire, and when the smoke clears she discovers that her brother has been kidnapped. She must figure out what is going on, and quickly, if she and her family are to be safe.

Following clues left behind on Tommy’s computer, determined to find her brother and bring him home safely, Jessica and two of her friends are about to embark on a journey that will test their spirits and their courage to the breaking point, as they must leave their own world behind and confront the source of Earth’s darkest legends – as well as the terrifying truth of their own secret heritage.

My Review

4 stars

Jessica Drake is a teenager with her brother Tommy and mother. Her mother usually works long hours and you can find Tommy on marathon online video games at all hours of the day. One day while Tommy is home “sick” he sees a strange lady watching the house. The same lady is also very interested in Jessica’s artwork. But things don’t get rolling until a DNA test shows that Jessica is not her parent’s child. Through research she learns that this is not as uncommon as most people think and meet up with two other Changelings, Devon and Rita.

Then Jessica wakes up to learn that someone has set her house on fire and kidnapped Tommy. She goes on a quest to get Tommy back and learns that there are many versions of this world and that he has been taken to one of these worlds. Now Jessica, Devon, and Rita must learn that workings of this new world quickly or they are not going to be saving Tommy and returning back to their world.

Jessica has been having strange dreams all of her life and has the ability to see patterns. But when she learns that her DNA doesn’t match her parents she starts to worry about what is happening. But when she goes to another world, similar yet not to ours, to save Tommy she starts learning more about the Changelings. Jessica is such a strong character but I do have to say that she is very rash in her pursuit of Tommy.

I loved the world building and the background story is fantastic. But the story is not over and I cannot wait to see what happens next in Dreamseeker.

After Impact

After Impact (After Impact – 1) by Nicole Stark

(Excerpt from Goodreads) Avalon wakes up from a 100 year old cryosleep in a new habitat with few memories and lots of questions. At first, HOPE (Humanity’s One Plan for Escape) habitat appears to be a well-oiled machine, preparing 5,000 carefully chosen inhabitants for a new Earth. However, a medical assistant named Ilium reveals that certain members of the habitat have been falling ill from a mysterious virus they were inoculated against. Soon, HOPE habitat’s tranquil illusion is shattered as Avalon plays a perplexing message left by her father. If Avalon is to survive this dangerous new environment , she will have to find the strength to navigate a habitat enveloped in secrets.

This is a relentless page-turning thriller, and the first in a series by debut author Nicole Stark.

My Review

4 stars

Avalon’s father discovered the asteroid that was going to hit the Earth. The government prepared the Humanity’s One Plan for Escape (HOPE) habitat to try and save people. 5,000 people are selected and put into cryosleep to survive through the destruction o the Earth. Now they are waking up. Avalon awakens earlier than the rest with a message from her father to not trust anyone.

There are classes of people just life before the impact. And as everyone is learning their roles, Avalon notice people are disappearing and some are coming down with a sickness that was supposed to have been cured. Her and Ilium are working together to try and figure out what is happening. Will they figure out what is happening or will they find themselves banished from HOPE?

I am a huge fan of apocalyptic and dystopian stories so this was a big hit. I liked following along pre-impact and after. The mystery of what was really happening made the story even better. I loved how the story made so many twists and turns that you had a hard time figuring out what was happening.

The only thing I don’t really like are love triangles. I did feel having one was a bit annoying but it’s not as bad as some books I have read. Mind you I was cheering for Ilium the whole time.

This is a great story and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next story.

To purchase After Impact make sure to check out Amazon, Goodreads, and Nicole Stark’s website.

I received After Impact for free from the author in exchange for an honest review.
