Kill and Run (A Thorny Rose Mystery – 1) by Lauren Carr

Five women with seemingly nothing in common are found brutally murdered in a townhome outside Washington, DC. Among the many questions surrounding the massacre is what had brought these apparent strangers together only to be killed.

Taking on his first official murder case, Lieutenant Murphy Thornton, USN, believes that if he can uncover the thread connecting the victims, then he can find their murderer.

The case takes an unexpected turn when Murphy discovers that one of the victims has a connection to his stepmother, Homicide Detective Cameron Gates. One wintry night, over a dozen years before, her first husband, a Pennsylvania State trooper, had been run down while working a night shift on the turnpike.

In this first installment of the Thorny Rose Mysteries, the Lovers in Crime join newlyweds Lieutenant Murphy Thornton and Jessica Faraday to sift through a web of lies and cover-ups. Together, can the detectives of the Thorny Rose uncover the truth without falling victim to a cunning killer?

My Review

5 stars

Five women have been discovered murdered in a house in Washington DC. Lieutenant Murphy Thornton is a naval investigative officer that has been sent to look the crime scene over. He is just expected to release the scene to the local police but when he discovers one of the victims is from the navy he has to investigate. Then Murphy learns that one of the women killed connects to his step-mother and the death of her first husband. Things start proceeding at a breakneck pace when it seems there is someone higher of higher ranking in the military trying to cover up evidence spanning back more than thirteen years. But threatening Murphy and Jessica was the first mistake they made in trying to cover everything up.

Murphy has been stationed in Washington DC temporarily and is constantly butting heads with his boss. But when he finds a case that clearly deals with the Navy he can’t stand by and let the local police investigate it, must to his boss’s dismay. In his investigations, he finds that one of the women has a daughter and no family that she can go to so Murphy rescues her from foster care and promises her that he will find her mother’s killer.

Thankfully Jessica is there along with his step-mother, even though they get in a bit of trouble from someone that tries to silence them permanently. Murphy is having none of his and with the help of his father, plans to take down the person behind these deaths and other events relating to the women killed.

Ever since I read Mystery at Astaire Castle I have fallen in love with the Mac Faraday mysteries and Lauren Carr. When I was invited to review this book I was over the moon. Jessica Faraday is Mac’s daughter and has recently married Murphy Thornton, son to Joshua Thornton. It was so wonderful to be introduced to the new characters. I listened to his book on Audible and I have to say CJ McAllister does a wonderful job narrating this book.

This is a great start to a new mystery series and I just love how it links into the other series from Lauren Carr. I strongly recommend checking out her books. You will not be disappointed. I’m just happy that I have the second book to jump right into.

I received Kill and Run from iRead Book Tours for free. This has in no way influenced my opinion of this book.
