Marathon (Jonathan Stride – 8) by Brian Freeman

On a rainy June morning, tens of thousands of people crowd into Duluth for the city’s biggest annual event: Grandma’s Marathon. Exhausted runners push to reach the finish line and spectators line the streets to cheer them on. Then, in a terrifying echo of the Boston Marathon bombing, there is an explosion along the race course, leaving many people dead and injured. Within minutes, an urgent manhunt begins for the person who planted the backpack filled with explosives.

Stride, Serena, and Maggie are forced into supporting roles in this investigation as FBI special agents take over the case. Politicians and the media push for answers and rumors fly as people leap to the conclusion that this was radical Islamic terrorism.

One spectator remembers being jostled by a young man with a backpack not far from the bomb site. He spots a young Muslim man in a tourist’s photo of the event, convinced that this man bumped into him in the crowd-but there’s no backpack in the photo. Distrusting that the police will follow up, he tweets the photograph to the public. In seconds, the young man, Mehdi, becomes the most wanted man in the city.

When new photographs surface from the day of the bombing, the spectator realizes he may have made a terrible mistake. Stride, Serena, and Maggie awaken to the possibility that the motive behind this bombing may not have been terrorism at all. But can they find the truth before more innocent people are killed?

My Review

4 stars

People have gathered in Duluth Minnesota for the city’s biggest event: Grandma’s Marathon. But just as the runners are heading to the finish line a bomb goes off just like at the Boston bombing. Someone was bumped into by a Muslim man with a backpack. His picture is found and posted on Twitter. Within minutes all Middle Eastern men are targeted. Then he is discovered and people jump to the conclusion that he is the cause of the bombing. But then the witness thinks he may have made an error. By then it’s too late the change the rolling force of vengeful people that have no desire to look at the truth especially when more victims are discovered. It’s up to Jonathan and his team to find the truth before an innocent man get blamed.

This is my first Jonathan Stride book and I was pleasantly surprised. This is a story right out of the headlines and written in such a way to make you think twice about events on social media. It’s is written so well that you feel just like you discovered the post on your own Twitter page and want to get justice for those injured or killed. But it also shows how easy it is to get the wrong information and how easy it is to blame the wrong person.

There is a lot of action and suspense that will keep you drawn into this story. You will race through the pages and will love the surprising ending. I loved this book and will definitely be catching up on the other Jonathan Stride books.

I received Marathon from Quercus for free. This has in no way influenced my opinion of this book.

Author’s Bio

Addie Hunter has been writing since she was young, always coming up with new characters and stories. A huge fan of anything superhero related, it was only a matter of time before she came up with some superhero characters, and the Transcend series is the culmination of a lifelong fascination with the supernatural and cliche, overused tropes. She has thirteen plants and three jobs and one psycho dog.

She is currently working on the second book in the Transcend series.

My Review

4 stars

Six teenagers in the small town of Arhaus, NV have gained super powers. The don masks and set about saving the world while trying to get through high school. They all have their little niches but come upon someone that is planning on ending the world. The kids have been working loosely on their own but they are no match for the bad guy, they are going to have to learn to work together as a team to save the world.

This story is about six teenagers, three boys and three girls that acquire super powers. They tend to work loosely together but they all want to be the main hero. This leads to more problems and need to learn to work together. The kids also have to keep their identities secret, which they were extremely horrible about. I do feel their struggle as they try to balance their “normal” day lives. High school and being a teenager is hard enough without super powers and stopping the bad guy.

On the other hand, you can tell that this is a first book for Addie Hunter. It felt rough and could have used more editing. I have to say with six kids and their secret identities I got lost in the book. It was just too much for such a quick book. Also, the fight scenes were rushed and felt awkward. The main portion of this book focused on high school life and drama. It feels like too much attention was focused on this.

Over all I did like this book. It is the start of a series and is rough. I think there is a lot of potential there and I would like to see what happens in the book.

I received Heritage from the author for free. This has in no way influenced my opinion of this book.

Forest of the Fae: The Raven Queen (Book 2) by K. Kibbee

A summer spent untangling a century-old mass disappearance, communing with ghosts, fleeing dark Fae Folk, and enduring her nefarious cousin Lexie would seem like tribulation enough for 13-year-old Anne, and yet her struggles have only just begun.

Though she’s closed Devlin’s Door behind her, it would seem that something sinister has followed Anne from the other side. Her dearest friend Grace is not as she would seem. Something dark has taken hold of the girl . . . something not of this world. Ravens surround her, people mindlessly do her bidding, and wickedness drips from her lips. It’s only a matter of time before Anne uncovers her secret and with it, her vengeance.

Meanwhile, somewhere deep in the Forests of the Fae, the real Grace struggles to retain her humanity and escape the revolting Faerie body that imprisons her. With pet raven Onyx at her side, she is heralded a Queen, and worshiped by the very creatures that she despises. Set atop a throne of thorns, she feels all is lost, until a stranger with human eyes and a sorted past is shackled at her feet.

Though worlds apart, both girls must race against time if they hope to unravel the mysteries of the Fae folk and unmask The Raven Queen.

Anne has just gotten home after closing Devon’s Door. But she has a serious problem, although the creature looks like Grace it is really a changeling. This changeling is bound and determined to keep its new place in Anne’s family and will take control of those around them to put Anne away in a mental facility. At the same time the real Grace is still in the Brown Forest in the changeling’s body. She will have to navigate the Fae world to try get to a portal and change back into herself. Thankfully she has Onyx and a journal to keep her humanity.

I really enjoyed Devon’s Door and was very excited to see what was going to happen next. Anne knows instantly that Grace is a changeling but she has to try and hide that knowledge. It doesn’t matter because eventually the changeling finds out and starts to turn everyone against her.  At the same time it is heartbreaking to follow along as Grace is trying to navigate the Fae Forests. She can feel the changeling body corrupting her but it is a continual battle to keep her humanity.

This is a great follow up to Devin’s Door. It’s so easy to slide right back into the story and be on pins and needles following both girls. There will be one more book to end this series and I can’t wait to see how things end. This is a great story that will appeal to all ages.

Tim and Susanna Eckels seem like the perfect couple. They meet in college as introverts that created a friendship that lead to them marrying, Tim opening his own funeral home, and Susanna becoming an assistant to the top chef in the only fine dining restaurant in their little town. But there is so much more to this story. Susanna has a horrible past that has given her dark cravings. She uses these cravings to accentuate her artistic hobby. With bodies piling up Tim is doing everything to protect his reputation as a mortician. But when he starts questioning Susanna’s hobby he will have to protect himself too. Susanna thinks Tim is starting to get an idea about her hobby and is prepared to do whatever it takes to keep her secret.

This is a dark thriller with insight into the killers mind. Susanna broke a long time ago and relies on her artistic hobby to keep her going. Tim and her seem to have the perfect marriage but when he starts wondering about her he puts his own life on the line.

This is a dark thriller that is going to draw you in and have you up all night just to see what happens next. I love how Tim and Susanna look like the perfect couple yet deep down Susanna is seriously unhinged and willing to do anything to fuel her dark artistic hobby. If you are looking for a great thriller to keep you up all night you need to check out The Quiet Type.

Stowy Jenkins, aka, Stone, and as Alaskans refer to him, the Snowman, is a true artist. His muse, Gigi, is the ultimate inspiration for his painting. Her rejection inspires him to use a very unusual medium…blood.

While art may be his passion, the taste for blood is his obsession, and multiple murders, the result.

Read an excerpt:

Colt heard a small chopper. It sounded like a lawnmower. He knew it couldn’t be the AirSquad and looked up. A news helicopter circled overhead. He saw another coming up the coast from Los Angeles. In minutes, news crews in vans would arrive, extend their satellite transmission poles, broadcast pictures of the accident and fan out to find people to interview. In the process, several spectators would have a moment of fame on Los Angeles network television. The accident would be a good lead-in on the 11:00 p.m. Sunday night news, but the anchors would be disappointed that a Malibu celebrity wasn’t involved.

Moose joined them with the backboard and laid it down next to the girl’s body.

Brian checked the C-spine. “Ready guys? On my count.”

The men prepared to roll the girl on her side.

“Be careful,” Colt said.

Brian gave Colt a quick look and said, “One, two, three.”

In unison, they rolled her onto her side, Moose pushed the board in toward her and the men laid her back onto it.

Colt thought he heard her utter a faint moan. While Brian secured the head brace and straps across her body and prepared her for transport across the beach, he looked at her bloodied leg again. “Where’s the foot?” he shouted. “Does someone have her foot?” She still wore one delicate leather sandal.

“We can’t find the sucker,” one of the deputies told Colt.

“Can’t find it? How’s that possible?” Colt said. The girl needed her foot. They had to ice it down before the tissue started to die. It might be reattached. “It has to be here somewhere.” He went over to the damaged pickup.

The driver of the truck sat with his head down, behind the metal screen in the back seat of a black and white. A sheriff’s deputy stood outside, questioning him through the window and writing on his notepad. Colt interrupted. “Where’s the foot?” He was met with a shrug and a blank stare from the deputy. Colt looked at the driver of the pickup, a man about his own age, and hated him.

Colt walked around the pickup. Glass shards from a headlight and pieces of plastic lay on the ground. He knelt in a pool of green coolant dripping from the smashed radiator and looked under the front of the truck. The foot wasn’t there. He stood up and looked around.

Thirty or forty people stood in the parking lot watching the activity.

My Review

4 stars

Colt Lewis is a paramedic in Los Angeles. He truly cares about people but you can tell that his job does get to him. He continually thinks about his first run with a young lady that was a hit and run victim that died in Colt’s arms. Cold thinks about her foot that was severed and disappeared. He really wants to find out what happened to it.

Then there is Markus, his is an albino and believes his is a vampire. He obsession with blood is almost sexual in nature and when he finds someone with very rare blood he thinks he has a way to make some quick cash.

This is an interesting story to say the least. Colt is a genuine good guy and wants to help. I can see how different incidents would be hard for him. Heck just reading about them is hard. I can see why he becomes obsessed with finding her foot. Markus is just beyond creepy but then again there are weird people out there. I couldn’t help but feel for poor A Li struggling in America. But the icing on this weird cake is the Russian thugs selling body parts.

This story was a little slow to get rolling but once you did it was a good little read. It could easily be read in one day. You get a firsthand feel of being a paramedic and the creepiness of a body parts trade. I also didn’t expect the ending which was really well done. Kurt Kamm is definitely one author to watch out for.

My Review

5 stars

This is the story of a very rare lizard, a Motagua Valley beaded lizard in fact. There is a myth that anyone that acquires it will be cursed with disaster or death. This lizard is going to cross paths with poor people, drug cartels, DEA agents, and many others. Although you will meet all kinds of people in different situations, the theme stays the same, what do people want the most and what are they willing to do to achieve that.

This is an interesting journey with all the people you will meet. Poor people that are willing to do anything for a little money. Drug cartel members that have a fancy for exotic animals and so much money they have no value for it. DEA agents that want promotions. And a little boy that lost his mother years earlier and is just trying to survive, this one brought a tear to my eye.

I find it fascinating the different people the lizard meets in this story. It’s amazing how one animal or items can come into contact with so many people. But the main thing to take away from the story is that everything we do always effects someone. Everyone has tough decisions to make and the end results are not always what they wanted. Although we may desire something that doesn’t mean we need it or that it will be easy to obtain.

This is a wonderful story and one that I thing everyone should like. This is a book that you should check out.

I received The Lizard’s Tale from the author for free. This has in no way influenced my opinion of this book.
