Marathon (Jonathan Stride – 8) by Brian Freeman

On a rainy June morning, tens of thousands of people crowd into Duluth for the city’s biggest annual event: Grandma’s Marathon. Exhausted runners push to reach the finish line and spectators line the streets to cheer them on. Then, in a terrifying echo of the Boston Marathon bombing, there is an explosion along the race course, leaving many people dead and injured. Within minutes, an urgent manhunt begins for the person who planted the backpack filled with explosives.

Stride, Serena, and Maggie are forced into supporting roles in this investigation as FBI special agents take over the case. Politicians and the media push for answers and rumors fly as people leap to the conclusion that this was radical Islamic terrorism.

One spectator remembers being jostled by a young man with a backpack not far from the bomb site. He spots a young Muslim man in a tourist’s photo of the event, convinced that this man bumped into him in the crowd-but there’s no backpack in the photo. Distrusting that the police will follow up, he tweets the photograph to the public. In seconds, the young man, Mehdi, becomes the most wanted man in the city.

When new photographs surface from the day of the bombing, the spectator realizes he may have made a terrible mistake. Stride, Serena, and Maggie awaken to the possibility that the motive behind this bombing may not have been terrorism at all. But can they find the truth before more innocent people are killed?

My Review

4 stars

People have gathered in Duluth Minnesota for the city’s biggest event: Grandma’s Marathon. But just as the runners are heading to the finish line a bomb goes off just like at the Boston bombing. Someone was bumped into by a Muslim man with a backpack. His picture is found and posted on Twitter. Within minutes all Middle Eastern men are targeted. Then he is discovered and people jump to the conclusion that he is the cause of the bombing. But then the witness thinks he may have made an error. By then it’s too late the change the rolling force of vengeful people that have no desire to look at the truth especially when more victims are discovered. It’s up to Jonathan and his team to find the truth before an innocent man get blamed.

This is my first Jonathan Stride book and I was pleasantly surprised. This is a story right out of the headlines and written in such a way to make you think twice about events on social media. It’s is written so well that you feel just like you discovered the post on your own Twitter page and want to get justice for those injured or killed. But it also shows how easy it is to get the wrong information and how easy it is to blame the wrong person.

There is a lot of action and suspense that will keep you drawn into this story. You will race through the pages and will love the surprising ending. I loved this book and will definitely be catching up on the other Jonathan Stride books.

I received Marathon from Quercus for free. This has in no way influenced my opinion of this book.

 Addie Hunter

Author’s Bio

Addie Hunter has been writing since she was young, always coming up with new characters and stories. A huge fan of anything superhero related, it was only a matter of time before she came up with some superhero characters, and the Transcend series is the culmination of a lifelong fascination with the supernatural and cliche, overused tropes. She has thirteen plants and three jobs and one psycho dog.

She is currently working on the second book in the Transcend series.

My Review

4 stars

Six teenagers in the small town of Arhaus, NV have gained super powers. The don masks and set about saving the world while trying to get through high school. They all have their little niches but come upon someone that is planning on ending the world. The kids have been working loosely on their own but they are no match for the bad guy, they are going to have to learn to work together as a team to save the world.

This story is about six teenagers, three boys and three girls that acquire super powers. They tend to work loosely together but they all want to be the main hero. This leads to more problems and need to learn to work together. The kids also have to keep their identities secret, which they were extremely horrible about. I do feel their struggle as they try to balance their “normal” day lives. High school and being a teenager is hard enough without super powers and stopping the bad guy.

On the other hand, you can tell that this is a first book for Addie Hunter. It felt rough and could have used more editing. I have to say with six kids and their secret identities I got lost in the book. It was just too much for such a quick book. Also, the fight scenes were rushed and felt awkward. The main portion of this book focused on high school life and drama. It feels like too much attention was focused on this.

Over all I did like this book. It is the start of a series and is rough. I think there is a lot of potential there and I would like to see what happens in the book.

I received Heritage from the author for free. This has in no way influenced my opinion of this book.

Forest of the Fae: The Raven Queen (Book 2) by K. Kibbee

A summer spent untangling a century-old mass disappearance, communing with ghosts, fleeing dark Fae Folk, and enduring her nefarious cousin Lexie would seem like tribulation enough for 13-year-old Anne, and yet her struggles have only just begun.

Something dark has taken hold of the girl . . . something not of this world. Ravens surround her, people mindlessly do her bidding, and wickedness drips from her lips. It’s only a matter of time before Anne uncovers her secret and with it, her vengeance.

Meanwhile, somewhere deep in the Forests of the Fae, the real Grace struggles to retain her humanity and escape the revolting Faerie body that imprisons her. With pet raven Onyx at her side, she is heralded a Queen, and worshiped by the very creatures that she despises. Set atop a throne of thorns, she feels all is lost, until a stranger with human eyes and a sorted past is shackled at her feet.

Anne has just gotten home after closing Devon’s Door. But she has a serious problem, although the creature looks like Grace it is really a changeling. This changeling is bound and determined to keep its new place in Anne’s family and will take control of those around them to put Anne away in a mental facility. At the same time the real Grace is still in the Brown Forest in the changeling’s body. She will have to navigate the Fae world to try get to a portal and change back into herself. Thankfully she has Onyx and a journal to keep her humanity.

I really enjoyed Devon’s Door and was very excited to see what was going to happen next. Anne knows instantly that Grace is a changeling but she has to try and hide that knowledge. It doesn’t matter because eventually the changeling finds out and starts to turn everyone against her.  At the same time it is heartbreaking to follow along as Grace is trying to navigate the Fae Forests. She can feel the changeling body corrupting her but it is a continual battle to keep her humanity.

This is a great follow up to Devin’s Door. It’s so easy to slide right back into the story and be on pins and needles following both girls. There will be one more book to end this series and I can’t wait to see how things end. This is a great story that will appeal to all ages.

I received The Forest Fae: The Raven Queen from Sage’s Blog Tours for free. This has in no way influenced my opinion of this book.

Tim and Susanna Eckels seem like the perfect couple. They meet in college as introverts that created a friendship that lead to them marrying, Tim opening his own funeral home, and Susanna becoming an assistant to the top chef in the only fine dining restaurant in their little town. But there is so much more to this story. Susanna has a horrible past that has given her dark cravings. She uses these cravings to accentuate her artistic hobby. With bodies piling up Tim is doing everything to protect his reputation as a mortician. But when he starts questioning Susanna’s hobby he will have to protect himself too. Susanna thinks Tim is starting to get an idea about her hobby and is prepared to do whatever it takes to keep her secret.

This is a dark thriller with insight into the killers mind. Susanna broke a long time ago and relies on her artistic hobby to keep her going. Tim and her seem to have the perfect marriage but when he starts wondering about her he puts his own life on the line.

This is a dark thriller that is going to draw you in and have you up all night just to see what happens next. I love how Tim and Susanna look like the perfect couple yet deep down Susanna is seriously unhinged and willing to do anything to fuel her dark artistic hobby. If you are looking for a great thriller to keep you up all night you need to check out The Quiet Type.
