Liquid Cool: The Cyberpunk Detective Series (Liquid Cool – 1) by Austin Dragon

Liquid Cool is the debut cyberpunk detective series!

It’s cyberpunk re-imagined—science fiction meets the detective thriller in an ever-rainy world of colossal skyscrapers. Hover-cars fly above in the dark, bustling skies and gray people walk below on the grimy, flashy streets of this “neon jungle.” Metropolis isn’t a bad place, but it isn’t a good one either. Uber-governments and mega-corporations fight for control of the super-city, but so does crime.

We were introduced to Liquid Cool, by the free prequel short, These Mean Streets, Darkly. We met an average woman, Carol—hardworking and decent in every way—only to have her daughter kidnapped by the psycho cyborg Red Rabbit. Can Police Central find the girl in time—alive? And is it really another senseless act of random violence in the fifty-million-plus super-city?

This story continues…and there are so many more. For the first time, we meet our private eye (and unlikely hero), Cruz in a super-city where there are a million victims and perpetrators. Welcome to the high-tech, low-life world of Liquid Cool.

But watch out for tech-tricksters, analog hustlers, and digital gangsters—psychos, samurais, and cyborgs aplenty—they may want your money, or your life, more than you do.

Cruz is a Private Consultant in Metropolis, or atleast he would be if he could get his permit. He is asked to look into several seemingly unrelated cases that has him knocking on the doors of police, mob bosses, and those running the city. While balancing his life on the edge of the haves and have-nots and solving these cases, he is also trying to prove to his crazy in-laws that he is a worthy match for their daughter.

Cruz will have you entertained by the action and trouble he finds himself in but also his wit. He is the classic Sam Spade detective plugging through whoever gets in his way to solve the mystery no matter what may come his way.

I loved this story. There are so many genera’s that it will please almost anyone.  You have the futuristic city with those scraping by and degenerates on the bottom and those with money and power on top. And with any great mystery, the bigger the crime the higher up you have to go up the food chain.

There is lots of action and a sci-fi feel to this story that will leave you thinking of Blade Runner. I have not read the prequel to Liquid Cool, These Mean Streets, Darkly but I will be checking it out soon. This is a great mystery that will draw you in and leave you wanting more. This is one book to check out.

I received Liquid Cool from the author for free. This has in no way influenced my opinion of this book.

Publisher:  Month9Books/Tantrum Books

When the clocks in town stop, thirteen-year-old CJ discovers an unusual “clock world” where most of the citizens are clock parts, tasked with keeping the big clocks running. But soon the seemingly peaceful world is divided between warring factions with CJ instructed to find the only person who can help: the elusive Tick Tock Man.
With the aid of Fuzee, a partly-human girl, he battles gear-headed extremists and razor-sharp pendulums in order to restore order before this world of chimes, springs, and clock people dissolves into a massive time warp, taking CJ’s quiet New England town with it.

It is Thanksgiving and thirteen year old CJ wants to sleep in until the alarm clock starts making a strange noise. Then while setting up the clocks in the house the family learns that Uncle Artie is in the hospital. This is the beginning of the mess. He then notices that all the clocks are stopped at 2:00 pm and he is the only one that notices. He also learns that he can shift into the clocks. He meets a half human girl Fuzee. CJ learns there is a war happening between the extremists and pendulums and that the only one that can stop it is the Tick Tock Man but no one knows where he is hiding.

This is a wonderful story about a boy growing into a young man. I felt for poor CJ when his grandfather and father accuse him of breaking the Hoffhalder. What a bunch of jerks!! But I loved Furtwangen. What an amazing world centering on clocks! But I have to say that Fuzee made the story. She was a strong female lead and the perfect opposite to CJ.

This is a wonderful midgrade story that will appeal to everyone. You will learn so much about analog clocks. It’s easy to get into this story and hard to leave when you finish the book. This is one to check out.

I received The Tick Tock Man from the author and Chapter by Chapter Blog Tours for free. This has in no way influenced my opinion of this book.

Aurora Firedrake is back and she is in for one heck of a ride. Aurora needs to learn how to use her fire mage power, stop her Aunt Morgana for taking over the world, and find the legendary Dawnstar. Aurora has more than just her hands full. But the thing to remember is she is still a teenager and finding her way in this world and doesn’t always listen when she is told what to do and finds herself in trouble. She is still a teenager and in love for the first time. But she is determined to save her world from Morgana no matter what.

We jump right into the action where we left off in The Last of the Firedrakes. Aurora is starting to find her place in Avalonia and is determined to learn how to use her powers to fight Morgana. Then she hears of the legendary Dawnstar and decides this is the only way she can defeat Morgana and goes on a quest to find it, if it is even real.

Aurora also has her first love to deal with too. She is very unsure of herself and her relationship so she is easily distracted by anyone that makes her question Rafe. She also has to make a harsh decision at the end of the story, one that I was not completely thrilled with but I could understand why she made it.

This is a great book and addition to the series. I would recommend reading The Last of The Firedrakes first otherwise you will be lost in this story. But it is one that I think those that like young adult fantasies will love.

I received The Rise of the Dawnstar from the author for free. This has in no way influenced my opinion of this book.
