My Review

5 stars

A young woman stands on the cliffs by the sea, heartbroken, and is pushed by Hera into the sea. Thankfully Poseidon saves her. The woman is Haddie and she has a destiny among the gods. A centaur, Ori helps her and they become fast friends. Haddie is the half daughter of Hera and was supposed to be killed when it was discovered she has no power. But now that she is an adult she has more power than even she knows. And she is in great danger since Hera is determined to erase her mistake from years earlier.

This is a great story of a young woman learning she has more power and family than she thought. She is instantly accepted and welcomed into her family as everyone learns of her abilities. I loved seeing the gods in action and really like how Hera got her own. Of course she still has to cause trouble. But Hera is not the only one Haddie has to be warry of.

This is a great story. It was easy to get into and I love the description of everything. I felt right there as Haddie walked Poseidon’s palace. There is love and sadness and I have to say that Thamous was my favorite character.

If you like Greek mythology you will enjoy this book. It is the first in a series and I cannot wait to see what happens next.

I received His Bride from the Sea from the author for free. This has in no way influenced my opinion of this book.

Sparks: Welcome to the Madhouse by Dan Cummings

Dave Reynolds has grown jaded with his life, locked in a dead end janitorial job at the Ravenswood Institute for Mental Health, he quietly yearns for some excitement to stir up his mundane existence.

That is until he learns that far below the hospital’s grounds lies the Madhouse, the regional headquarters of the Frontline Unified Battalion of Arcane Resistance (FUBAR), a clandestine government agency tasked with combating supernatural evil. If that wasn’t enough of a surprise, he also learns that he is a Spark, an individual with latent gifts, carrying the residual energy of a nigh extinct race of universal protectors.

Drafted into service, he is accidentally afflicted with a curse, casting the sensible, rational aspects of his personality into a subconscious prison, unleashing a clownish psychotic who is as deadly as he is irritating.

A wild card personified, Dave must now lead Whiskey Team, a motley crew of fellow Sparks and freaks including a punk rock witch, a werewolf, a medium and his ghostly best friend, and a female Japanese ninja, against the Alliance of Nyx, an ancient demonic organisation with designs on global conquest.

Now, if Dave’s reckless antics don’t get his team killed, they may just stand a chance in this war.

Author’s Bio

Dan Cummings is an indie author of horror and action/fantasy from Liverpool, England. He is also a lowly nerd with a short attention span and shorter fuse (depending on poor sleep), but when he is able to stop ranting with his own internal monologue and focus for a few minutes he enjoys putting the noise in his head on to paper. A lifetime fan of monsters, comic books, sarcasm and casual violence, it is inevitable that these constituents regularly crop up in his books.

Dave Reynolds is a janitor at the Ravenswood Institute for Mental Health. He is burnt out and wants to do something else when he discovers that the headquarters for the Frontline Unified Battalion of Arcane Resistance (FUBAR) is located under the institute. If that was not exciting enough, Dave learns that he has some abilities, unfortunately he becomes a psychotic clown. But he will be using his abilities along with others in FUBAR to fight the Alliance of Nyx and keep them from taking over the world.

Whiskey Team is a collection of paranormal creatures, people with abilities, and so much more. Dave has become a crazy clown that leads the team. This is a motley collection of people that have their own abilities and curses. I love how you are introduced to each one with enough background that you can comfortably get to know them before meeting another person. It makes the story flow so much better than trying to figure out who everyone is at once and being lost.

I loved all the action scenes and couldn’t read fast enough to see what was going to happen next. This book reminds me of the Suicide Squad, which I loved, especially since Dave reminds me of the Joker. Although not your typical heroes they are the ones that are being sent in to fight and they might even make it out if Dave doesn’t get them killed first.

I love stories of dark heroes. This is a great start to a new series. You have a little of everything in this book for everyone. It might be out of your norm but this is one I recommend checking out. Now I can’t wait for the next book.
