When Gods War: Roman Candle by F. Howard Billings
“The stone-age, cave-like beings of Zeon have certain death coming straight at them in the form of the neighboring planet Tareon. Zeon and Tareon orbit their sun in opposite directions, and every time they pass each other, Tareon draws Zeon closer and closer to their own orbit path. With no technology and only just beginning to discover electricity, the Zeons have no chance for survival.
Follow the family of Kairn; his wife, Rayelle; teenage daughter, Evene; and younger son, Trillo as they and the other two million Zeons try to survive the convergence of planets.
When Gods War: Roman Candle is a war of worlds—not between the people of those worlds but between the planets themselves. And the two million simple beings of Zeon are caught in the middle. With no technology and no hope, all two million Zeons just might die, until one day, a lucky few of them discover something that just may change everything.”

Every six months that planets Zeon and Tareon pass each other in orbit. But each time they pass, Zeon finds itself closer to Tareon. But now when the planets pass, the gravitation on Zeon is messed up, food dies, water dries up, and half of the population of the world is killed. With what little scientific knowledge the inhabitants have they are trying to find a way to save themselves. They try to get themselves to Tareon and safety but they didn’t think about if they can get to Tareon, if they can land and survive, the inhabitants, and if Tareon can even survive after the next pass by Zeon.
I really like the twist on most stories. Usually we are here to read about a hero rising to his place. But instead we are reading about a society trying to save themselves from the destruction of their planet. I like how you have the full range of thoughts and actions from the people on Zeon. Their world will be ending shortly and you still have people bickering about petty things. Natural selection does come into play with the first passing of Tareon and you see a lot of the problems thinning out.
I was hoping Kairn and his family would survive. But I really like the interactions between the more natural people as opposed to those with more technology. It was a great interaction that I think you could read more into it. This is a great story and one that I recommend checking out.
I received When Gods War: Roman Candle from Author Marketing Experts for free. This has in no way influenced my opinion of this book.
