Lord Elliott Mayfield aims to correct the very messy marital mistakes and spousal scandals of his brothers and sisters by requiring his nieces and nephews to choose worthy companions.  If they choose wisely, they will receive their generous share of the family’s inheritance.

Julia loves working as a governess, despite the objections of her mother, Amelia. And as it turns out, Amelia has a lot to say about the Mayfield men—none of it good. But Julia dismisses the rumors of ruined reputations and instead concentrates on helping Peter with his children and his fledgling business in canine husbandry. His kindness and gentleness is endearing—and increasingly attractive.

But Amelia, whose heart was broken thirty years ago by none other than Elliott Mayfield, is determined to prevent any relationship from blooming either between Peter and Julia—or between herself and Elliott.

Hearts and history collide as both couples must face their pasts and decide if risking it all is worth the promise of new love and a new future.

I wrote my first book while on bed rest with my third child in 1998 and haven’t stopped. My most recent books have been Historical Romance through the Proper Romance line with Shadow Mountain Publishing.

Lord Elliot Mayfield has decided that he is going to help out his nieces and nephews with their lives. He comes up with a proposal for them if they expect to inherit their portion of the family legacy. This story is about his nephew Peter, a widower with two young daughters. Peter hires Julia Hollingsworth to be a governess with the strict belief that she will never be more than that.

Julia has no plans to have a relationship with Peter and even though she doesn’t need a job, she enjoys the girls and helping Peter with his dog husbandry. But she finds herself wanting to spend more and more time with Peter. Her mother Amelia is determined to keep the two of them apart. But she has her own secret about Elliot Mayfield.

This was a great, sweet story with two pair of broken hearts trying everything they could to keep from falling in love again. Peter directs his loss of his wife into the dog breeding and Julia is perfect for his daughters. Of course Amelia is bound a determined to keep Julia from going through the same heartache that she went through. I understood her but at the same time wanted to slap her upside the head.

Over all this is not one of my normal reads and a first from Josi Kilpack. But I think I will be checking her other books out very soon. This is definitely one book that you need to read.
