Three Bloody Pieces: Caitlyn by Elizabeth Davies
A dead king, a queen who is more than she seems, and a witch who uses the dark arts to entrap her.
Queen, widow, beggar – Lady Caitlyn is all three, and now she can add murderer to the list.
When death and treachery propel her south to Normandy, to seek sanctuary with the exiled Prince Alfred, visions of a woman with ancient eyes travel with her.
Herleva is a woman filled with ambition and greed. A woman who intends to be more than a commoner. A woman who gets what she wants by whatever means possible, even if she has to practice the dark arts to achieve her goals.
A woman who is a witch.
Caitlyn finds herself caught up in a magic which changes her very being. A magic which produces a king to change the lives of every man, woman, and child in England.

My Review
5 stars
War has come to the kingdom of Rhain and Caitlyn. Rhain is slain and his advisor Idris convinces Caitlyn to run to fight another day. But as they run Caitlyn starts seeing visions and hearing the witch Herleva and her student Arlette. Herleva is drawing Caitlyn in for her own plans. Although Caitlyn keeps following Idris she soon finds herself in Herleva’s clutches and cursed to shift into a cat and unable to kill Herleva. If that was not bad enough, as long as the curse is never broken she will stay the same age forever.
I have to admit that I did not expect what I got from this book. There is so much happening that I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. Caitlyn’s work has been shattered by war and the loss of her kingdom. She wants to fight but Idris makes sense with his plan. If Rhain listened to his counsel she would also. But there is so much more in the works with Herleva.
This is another one of those books that I admit I wouldn’t normally choose but I am so glad that I did. This is a great historical story of kings and queens, betrayal, magic and the brutality of war. Of course the magic is what made it that much more. I really enjoyed this story and can’t wait to continue it in A Stain On The Soul.
