Redneck’s Revenge

Redneck’s Revenge (The Isabel Long Mystery Series – 2) by Joan Livingston

Her next case. She’s in it for good.

Isabel Long is in a funk months after solving her first case. Her relationship with the Rooster Bar’s owner is over. Then the cops say she must work for a licensed P.I. before working solo.

Encouraged by her ‘Watson’ — her 92-year-old mother  — Isabel snaps out of it by hooking up with a P.I. and finding a new case.

The official ruling is Chet Waters, an ornery so-and-so, was passed out when his house caught fire. His daughter, who inherited the junkyard, believes he was murdered. Topping the list of suspects are dangerous drug-dealing brothers, a rival junkyard owner, and an ex-husband.

Could the man’s death simply be a case of redneck’s revenge? Isabel is about to find out.

Author’s Bio

Joan Livingston is the author of novels for adult and young readers. Redneck’s Revenge, published by Crooked Cat Books, is the second in the mystery series featuring Isabel Long, a long-time journalist who becomes an amateur P.I. The first is Chasing the Case.

An award-winning journalist, she started as a reporter covering the hilltowns of Western Massachusetts. She was an editor, columnist, and most recently the managing editor of The Taos News, which won numerous state and national awards during her tenure.

After eleven years in Northern New Mexico, Joan returned to rural Western Massachusetts, which is the setting of much of her adult fiction, including the Isabel Long series.

My Review

5 stars

Isabel Long has hit a dry spell after her first case. Her boyfriend is gone and the police insist that she work with a licensed private investigator. Maria Ferreira, her 92 year old mother and “Watson” encourages her to go find herself a PI and get a new case, and does she find a dozy.

Annette’s father Chester Waters, Chet, owned the local junkyard and has quite the bit of history that is more colorful than honest. Chet’s is assumed to have been passed out when his house catches on fire but Annette insists that someone killed him.

Isabel and Maria start looking into Chet’s past and find themselves in trouble pretty quickly. Someone wants to make sure no one discovers who killed Chet and are willing to stop Isabel and Maria permanently.

This is the first book from Joan Livingston that I have read. I instantly liked Isabel for not taking any nonsense from anyone and having enough sass to put people in their place. Of course Maria stole the show for me; I love 92 year old women and the stuff that they can come up with.

The mystery was full of shady characters that wanted Chet dead for one reason or another. Every time I thought I might know what happened I was thrown off and completely surprised by the ending.

This is a great mystery and one I recommend checking out. I can’t wait to read Chasing The Case to see what I missed from the first book in the series and Joan Livingston’s other books. I think I have found another great author to add to my shelves.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.
