The first exciting novel in a brand-new series from New York Times bestselling author C. C. Hunter!
Her dad’s job is with the dead . . . and he’s bringing his work home with him.
Once again, seventeen-year-old Riley Smith is the new kid in school and her dad’s career has her back to being dubbed a freak. Truth is, she’s a much bigger freak than her classmates think. The only company she keeps these days is the dead who follow Dad home from work. She can see them. She can speak to them. And Fate seems to think she can help them solve their last problems so that they can move on to the other side. Which is odd, because with the loss of her mother and her father’s alcoholism, she’s got enough problems of her own.
But nothing could prepare her for the next tormented young spirit who darkens Riley’s door. The young woman’s death wasn’t the accident everyone believes. Soon Riley finds herself face-to-face with the killer and her only protection comes in the form of another spirit, Hayden, a boy her age with a heart-melting smile and understanding eyes that make her feel safe. If she can escape becoming the killer’s next victim, Riley knows she’ll have to help Hayden move on too, but what if she can’t let him go?

Riley Smith is the new kid again because of her dad’s inability to hold a job due to drinking. If that wasn’t bad enough she is also the freak because of her father’s job, he’s a mortician. He also tends to bring home the ghosts from work. Riley can see them and helps them cross over. But the most recent ghost, Abby is very troubled. Everyone thinks her death was an accident but Riley knows that it was a murder.
Riley has another ghost too, Hayden and he is not like any ghost she has visit her before. She can feel his touch and she cannot find an obituary. Riley decides to solve Abby’s murder and finds herself in the killer’s sights. Hayden is going to do everything he can to try and save her but together they might not be enough to keep Riley alive.
Riley is a great kid and I feel so bad for her. Her home life is tough but school is not going to be any better. I loved how she could help the ghosts cross over but Abby and Hayden were really a challenge. I really hoped that should could help Abby without getting herself killed.
The only thing that got me was the whole love triangle between the cheerleaders ex and the dead guy. We all know that I’m not a fan of then and know I just need to suck it up. Besides, the mystery made up for this.
This is a great story. I have read only one other book by CC Hunter and loved that book too. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series, Two Feet Under. I think I will be checking out CC Hunter’s other books too.
The Mortician’s Daughter: Two Feet Under
Riley has accepted that her special gift is to help dead people with their unfinished business. But she never thought she’d be tasked with helping the spirit of a convicted criminal who died in prison. He may lead her on the scariest mission yet, but helping him could mean saving the life of a child. The convict’s daughter needs a liver transplant and the one person who could still be a match is his brother…who also happens to be a gang leader.
Hayden’s not happy that Riley’s discovered who he is and is seeing him sick and unconscious in his hospital bed. This feels like as good a time as ever to cross over and put all of them out of their misery….but Riley is in danger. She’s visiting some of the most dangerous spots and confronting some of the creepiest low-lifes in town. For her, he’ll need to regain his strength and fight to keep her safe.
But dealing with other people’s problems still can’t keep Riley from her own. Her dad’s drinking has gotten worse. And she’ll soon learn it’s because he’s been keeping a huge, horrible secret that will change everything she believes about her family and her mother’s death.
Riley has come to accept talking to ghosts and helping them cross. But she is hesitant to help the ghost that died at the prison, especially since the last ghost almost got her killed. But she steps up when she learns what he needs, to help save his daughter. Unfortunately his brother is the leader of a bad gang and she is in for trouble trying to convince him to help his niece.
Then there is Hayden, Riley has learned the truth and he is not impressed with her knowing. But she wants him to pull through and he will fight to live to keep her safe. Then there is Kelsey wanting to know what is going on. But if that was not enough it seems that her dad has been drinking to hide a secret about her mother.
The story has amped up since the first book. There is more on Riley’s plate with the ghosts, school, and her family life. Where do I even begin? So I love Hayden and I understand why he is trying to hook Riley up with his friend. Come on dude, she loves you!! And her father, I hope we learn more about Riley’s mother in the next book.
Riley has really grown with her gift but she still is very overwhelmed with everything going on. Thankfully she has those to help her. Now I can’t wait to get my grubby little hands on Three Heartbeats Away. I HATE cliffhangers when the next book is not published.
I received a complimentary copy of these books. I voluntarily chose to read and post honest reviews.
