Mythicals

42118514

Mythicals by Dennis Meredith

They’re real: fairies, pixies, werewolves, ogres! They’re aliens!

Drunken journalist Jack March can’t believe his bleary eyes when he stumbles onto a winged fairy! She vaults away into the night sky, and his unbelievable—and unbelieved—encounter leads to a stunning revelation that all the creatures of myth and legend are real!

Fairies, pixies, trolls, werewolves, ogres, vampires, angels, elves, bigfoot—all are alien exiles to the planet. For their crimes, these “mythicals” are serving out banishment disguised in flesh-suits enabling them to live among the planet’s natives.

Jack reveals their secret to the world, along with a horrendous discovery: they have decided that the native “terminal species” must be eradicated before it ruins its home planet’s ecology.

In this riveting scifi/fairy tale, Jack joins with sympathetic fairies, pixies, and ogres to attempt to save the planet from the mythicals, as well as the mysterious alien cabal known as the Pilgrims.

My Review

5 Stars

Jack March is a drunken reporter. One night he sees a fairy trying to squeeze into a skin tight flesh suit. Of course he sees a story and tries to tell everyone about it. But no one believes him, he IS a well known alcoholic. But the fairy and other creatures that are hiding in plain sight believe him and are trying to keep their world secret.

The Pilgrims have decided that they like our world but feel that the humans are destroying it. So the best way to preserve the world is to remove the problem, humans. Thankfully not all of the creatures feel this way. There are some sympathetic to human and are willing to help him save the world.

This is a great story. I was sucked into it as soon as I read about A’eiio and her husband before and during the party. What a crappy position to be in yet when you read “Damnnity-damn-damn…Shit!” you can’t help but continue. And Jack, he is a drunk but still a reporter and wants to get the story out. Although he doesn’t seem to be the savior of the human race he does suck it up.

This is a great fantasy/scifi story that will draw you in and not let you go. The ending was kind of expected but still a good one. If you like fantasies you should check out this book.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.

Excerpt

Oh No! I’m back. I am surrounded by inky black nothingness. The air is musty…damp, my nostrils fill with the smell of dank basement. Like in a haunted house, filled with saws and chains and bloody hooks, this is the perfect place for any psycho to hide his tools of the crazy trade. I’m trembling, from the all-encompassing fear, eating at every cell in my body. Where am I? My fingers search out for clues. Beneath me is a thin mattress on a hard surface. My head rests on a concrete-like pillow. My breathing escalates as the panic rises in my chest. I open my mouth to scream, but only a muted croak escapes. Over the thunder of my pounding heart, I hear a booming crack, a gunshot. I recognize the sound from a trip to the range with Jake years earlier.

I swing my legs over the side of my perch, thinking in my blind panic to run even though I cannot see. I can’t ignore this intense urge to flee. But my impulse is thwarted by an unknown restraint trapping my left arm, a rope? Panic has me in its grip. I gasp for air to fill my lungs but produce only whimpers and muted pleas.

A loud screech reverberates through the darkness. Rats? Oh, please, no rats! Could this get any worse? Hysterical, I yank relentlessly on the rope tethering me. With each tug, the line cuts deeper into my skin. My arm warms as blood seeps from the gouges, coating my hand and fingers. Behind me, the pounding sound of footsteps startles me. Before I can turn to confront my visitor, I feel the rush of air preceding the impact to the back of my head. A blaze of bright stars then, a different blackness envelopes me.
