Are You One Of The Elect?
Dr. Helen Hope is a lecturer in eschatology – the study of death, judgment, and the destiny of humankind. She is also a Calvinist nun, her life devoted to atoning for a secret crime.
When a body is found crucified on a Liverpool beach, she forms an unlikely alliance with suspect Mikko Kristensen, lead guitarist in death metal band Total Depravity. Together, they go on the trail of a rogue geneticist who they believe holds the key – not just to the murder, but to something much darker.
Also on the trail is cynical Scouse detective Darren Swift. In his first murder case, he must confront his own lack of faith as a series of horrific crimes drag the city of two cathedrals to the gates of hell.
Science meets religious belief in this gripping murder mystery.

This is detective Darren Swift’s first investigation with his partner Colette Quinn. A body has been found crucified on the beach with a bible quote and a strange symbol. This leads them to Dr. Helen Hope, a nun that lectures on eschatology. But Swift has decided that the body has to be drug related.
The more Sister Hope thinks about the murder the more she finds a similarity to the death metal band Total Depravity. The lead guitarist, Mikko, teams up with Hope to figure out what is really going on and find so much more than just a ritualistic killing.
This is a surprising story. There is so much in it that I was looking up relating to religion, death, and where the soul is destined to go. I really like how Hope and Mikko are complete opposites but they work well together as they solve this mystery. And the mystery, wow, I never expected that direction. It really makes you think.
This was a great read and a very good start to a new series. I really enjoyed the book, I had a hard time putting it down, and I was looking up a lot of the stuff that I came across. It definitely was so much more than just a mystery. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book in the series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.
