Inspiration behind Inside Out

Tiffany Christina Lewis: The inspiration for Inside Out really came “from the sky”. I had been writing short stories for a long time and all of a sudden I had a huge idea for novel length story. I made it a novella out of fear that I couldn’t write a full novel. Yes, authors have irrational fears too. The story of Michael Taylor, his lover and a ruthless killer was a literally an epiphany. Compared to the sequel, which released four years later, Inside Out was barely outlined or thought about in no great detail at all. I was able to write the book within 3 months because the ideas we just washing over my mind relentlessly. I had no control over it.

It all worked out! My editor was amazing, I still work with her to this day, and the book has been really well received despite the lack of serious planning that was involved with the completion of the project.

Inspiration behind Stitches

Tiffany Christina Lewis: Stitches has literally been four books in four years. I did three rewrites on this book. The inspiration for this story came “from the sky”, kind of like Inside Out. Or maybe, the inspiration came from my characters! I had been forcing a story that I hated. Nurturing negative relationships from the first book, skipping far into the future, and Michael just wasn’t interested in that. Ask any author: characters lead your books where they want them to go. I couldn’t lie to myself. Michael hated what I was doing to his life. I finally let the ideas I had go away, and once I did that, I got my story. I was again, able to write this book pretty quickly and after that, the ideas flowed like water. The dam broke. Books three and four in the series are already written.

What to expect from Tiffany Christina Lewis:

Tiffany Christina Lewis: After Stitches, I have book three and four written in the Michael Taylor series. They need to be edited and prepared for release. I would like them released this year but I will be realistic and make it a requirement to get book three released before the year is up, at the least. We will be opening an independent press to release the works and getting ready to start accepting queries from other authors.

I am also starting a new character! Alyssa Fairfield is a spunky, smart and determined private investigator with a troubled past. I love her! Her adventures will be a bit more romantic but there is still a good crime element. I’m also doing some blogging and potentially crafting a Wattpad YA Sci-Fi story with apocalyptic themes.

Obedience

Obedience
by Michael Potts
Genre: Horror
It is a lazy summer day in the Appalachian foothills of Tennessee; much
like the day before, and the day before that. Everything seems normal
– at least on the surface; like an idyllic, pastoral painting; the
sky dyed with pastels of blue and white, the ground carpeted with
dark green fescue and bluegrass, a clapboard farmhouse resting on top
of a hill, sugar maples, oaks and Eastern red cedars providing
welcome shade from the heat of a Tennessee summer sun. You can almost
see moving images of little children running barefoot through the
grass; an era before tweeting and texting and the triumph of
technology over all.
Alas, appearances lie.
Behind the clapboard farmhouse sits a red barn, all bright and new looking;
fresh enough to lull a casual observer into believing it the benign
keeper of hey for cattle and shelter for goats. A closer look reveals
the color to be not barn red, but blood red.
Locals tend to close their eyes when passing by that barn. Something is just
not right about it. Some say it is unnatural. Some say it’s obscene
and evil. But they don’t say such things out loud, for the owner of
the barn is Sheldon Sprigg, a well-respected man of the cloth, the
preacher at Hare’s Corner Church of God Incarnate. Sheldon is the
most upright man in these parts. He keeps the law religiously, and
makes sure his wife and teenaged daughter do too. After all, to obey
is better than sacrifice.
Still, there’s just something that not right about that barn.
Michael Potts grew up near Smyrna, Tennessee and is currently Professor of
Philosophy at Methodist University in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
His undergraduate degree (in Biblical languages) is from David
Lipscomb University. He also holds the Master of Theology from
Harding University Graduate School of Religion, the Master of Arts
(in Religion) from Vanderbilt University, and the Ph.D. in philosophy
from The University of Georgia. Michael has twenty articles in
scholarly journals, nine book chapters, six encyclopedia articles,
six book reviews, and he co-edited the book, “Beyond Brain
Death: The Case Against Brain Based Criteria for Human Death,”
which was published in 2000 by Kluwer Academic Publishers. He also
has over fifty scholarly presentations, including one presented at
the Pontifical Academy of Sciences at The Vatican in 2005. Michael is
a 2007 graduate of The Writers Loft at Middle Tennessee State
University and a 2007 graduate of the Odyssey Writing Workshop at St.
Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire. His poetry has been
published in Journal of the American Medical Association, Iodine
Poetry Journal, Poems & Plays, and other literary journals. His
poetry chapbook, “From Field to Thicket,” won the 2006 Mary
Belle Campbell Poetry Book Award of the North Carolina Writers
Network. His creative nonfiction essay, “Haunted,” won the
Rose Post Creative Nonfiction Award, also sponsored by the North
Carolina Writers Network. Besides reading and writing, he enjoys
vegetable gardening, canning, and ghost investigations. He and his
wife, Karen, live with their three cats, Frodo, Rosie, and Pippin, in
Linden, North Carolina.
My Review
5 Stars

In the picturesque Appalachian foothills in Tennessee, we find a little farmhouse and barn that looks like it could be in a picture. But there is something wrong with this place, something wrong with the barn. The locals know and feel it but don’t dare voice t to Sheldon Sprigg, the local preacher. The barn is his and his is being guided to do the lords work. But which lord?

This book is downright creepy. A story of a preacher that is taking guidance from a dark entity and never questioning those orders, even when they say his daughter is bad and needs to be punished. I man that thinks of murder and is determined to keep those in his house under an iron thumb. Then there is the barn with its supernatural origins and evil intent.

This is an amazing horror story that had me creeped out numerous times. I had an idea what might happen but I was lead into the story like a lamb to the slaughter. Not everything that looks perfect it, remember, Lucifer was the most beautiful of the angels.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.

Publication Date: July 3rd, 2018

Genre: YA/ Historical Fiction/ Adventure

“I want to be free.” The words came rushing out of me before I could think through their implications and consequences.

“There are two things you need to know about yourself if you want to be free—what you stand for, and what you stand against.” Lady Penelope held up her hands, brandishing a pair of daggers that had been hidden in her skirts. “This world lives enslaved to its destruction, and so long as you are living, as long as you are fighting, you will be free.”

I gazed at the daggers, transfixed. Each blade was clothed in a leather scabbard, but the silver and obsidian of the daggers’ hilts winked at me, as though it was calling for me.

PRAGUE, 1870.

For the last ten years, nineteen-year-old Eleanora Svobodová has worked as a servant in her stepmother’s household. Along with her older brother, she dreams of the day they will be free to live life on their own terms.

But everything changes when their estranged grandmother comes to Prague on behalf of Queen Victoria. Throughout Bohemia, a string of murders and secret whispers hint at a larger coup. As the leader of the Order of the Crystal Daggers, an ancient order of spies and soldiers that protect kingdoms and their rulers, Lady Penelope is determined to mete out the perpetrators. Now, Eleanora must make the choice between a life of intrigue and saving the lives of others.

Can Eleanora find a way do the right thing and still find freedom?

With a fun blend of historical fiction, true love, castle intrigue, and family dysfunction, The Order of the Crystal Daggers is the latest adventure series from C. S. Johnson.

“What is it?” I asked him, noticing that he was staring back at me. “It seems you have remembered your dancing quite well,” he said, and I shook my head at once, keeping my forced smile steady as we passed by Lady POW.

“The practice helps,” I replied neutrally. “And it did help that Karl was a good dancer last night. Some of the others I danced with were not as good, but fortunately they blamed it on their own poor performance.”

“They were likely distracted by your beauty.”

“You don’t have to talk to me like that.” I rolled my eyes. “Be- sides, you might distract me now with your false flattery.”

“Flattery is always false, mademoiselle. I was speaking truth.”

Amir smiled. “You may have that problem in the future, when other men are dancing with you.”

“I can learn to handle it later, then.”

“You can also learn it now. There is nothing efficient about wasting time, after all.”

“I’d rather not, thank you very much. There is no need for you to continue talking to me.” My tone was frosty and bitter, every part a perfect complement to the kindness in his eyes. “Unless, of course, you’d like to tell me why you stole my father’s book from me when we unfortunately met?”

“I would not say it was unfortunate.” “What would you say it was, then?”

Amir’s mustache curled around the corners of his mouth. “God’s humor at work.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I asked, frustrated and infuriated. “Are you insulting me?”

“Never, mademoiselle.”

Before I could accuse him of lying in addition to insulting me, or before I could “accidentally” begin stepping on his toes, Lady POW began calling out instructions, making me feel even more insulted and infuriated—and even worse, isolated, and unable to do anything to escape.

“Hands up, Eleanora,” she called. “Yes, take a step closer. Now, remember to smile. Watch your timing; men are supposed to lead. And show your interest. Pretend you are dancing with a prince!”

Between Amir’s dancing and Lady Penelope’s snappy judgements, I felt trapped in a world of soft tyranny. It was a world where the truth was too impolite to be spoken, and even if it had to be, it had to be dressed up in clothes as strange and as ornate as the ones I was wearing, and it was likely as unrecognizable as I was in the end.

I certainly felt nothing like my usual self.

The others did not seem to believe it was me, either.

Amir held me at a polite distance as we danced, but I was still close enough I could see the pained delight in his eyes as he watched me, and recalling Lady POW’s earlier mistake of calling me by my mother’s name, I suddenly wondered if he was thinking of her, too.

The last note of the waltz rang out, and we finally slowed to a stop.

“Why did you take my father’s book?” This time, my question

was quiet but harsh against the growing silence. Amir seemed surprised, but he did not refrain from responding.

“It was not your father’s book, mademoiselle.”

I slowly dropped my hands from his. Already, I knew what he was going to say.

“When I saw you, it was like falling into a portal to the past, twenty-six years ago. I saw the book, and I knew it could only belong to my Naděžda.”

“You knew my mother.” The words were chunky and foreign to me as they came out of my mouth. I knew I had no reason to accuse him of something I already knew to be true.

“Yes. She was my dearest friend for many years before … ” Amir said quietly. I saw his gaze lower to the scar on his right hand. “And when she … left … I was angry.”

It plagued me, knowing that Lady POW was not the only one who seemed to prefer my mother to me.

“When she left the Order, you mean?”

“She did not leave the Order,” Amir whispered. “She left me.”

It took me a long moment to process everything. Amir and I were still standing in the middle of the room. Somewhere, a thousand moments and a million miles away, Lady POW clapped and praised us, telling us I was already much better at the waltz than before. She was calling for another song, but I barely heard any of it, as I watched while Amir’s eyes swam over with memories and emotion.

There was suddenly no denying the full truth of the matter. Amir had been in love with my mother.

My Review

4 Stars

Eleonora, Nora and Ben have worked as servants in their own home after their father died ten years earlier. Their stepmother Cecilia treats them like staff while the both of them dream of a time on their own. This all changed when their grandmother, Lady Penelope comes home and sets the house on end.

Nora is given the opportunity to join the Order of the Crystal Daggers, a secret order that protect kingdoms and their rulers. Nora is tossed into becoming a young lady fit for society and trained as the spy her mother was.

Nora quickly gets swept up into this new life and although she is introduced into society she still remembers a chance encounter with a sweet young man. But there is little time for these thoughts as she is needed for the Order.

I loved the whole Cinderella, rags to riches portion of the story. It is perfect for all those people that want a happy ending. But then the spying and intrigue started and at times I was confused at what the Order was really trying to accomplish in Prague.

I think this is a great start to the series that will leave you wanting more with the cliff hanger ending. The world is richly painted and quickly draws you in. I enjoyed reading this book and can’t wait to see what happens in the next book.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.
