Apprentice Needed (Wizard for Hire – 2) by Obert Skye

Ozzy Toffy’s adventure, which began in Wizard for Hire, continues when one dark and windy night, he gets out of bed, jumps out his window, and walks straight into the ocean.

More than ever, Ozzy could really use the services of Rin, the wizard he hired to help find his parents — but Rin is missing, despite Ozzy’s continual attempts to contact him. And Clark, the mechanical bird his father left him, is as peculiar and vain as ever.

When a mysterious package arrives, Ozzy and his good friend Sigi are sure that the plane ticket and thumb drive they find inside are from Rin. Trying to get Clark through security at the airport proves complicated — as most things are with Clark. But when they arrive in New York, they discover there’s even more adventure in store for them.

Will Rin return and save the day? Will Ozzy figure out why he keeps walking into the ocean? Can Sigi find a way to trust her delinquent father? Will someone please appreciate Clark the way he’d like to be appreciated? For once?

About the Author

Obert Skye read his first book at age two. He wrote his first story at age four. And he was nearly trampled by a herd of water buffalo at age six. For a short time, he lived on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, where he spent time as a candy-taster. Several years ago, Obert Skye says, he discovered the existence of Foo. Publishing his story as a fictional series was not Obert’s first choice. Nevertheless he is content that the “history” is being told.

We start the story with Ozzy staying at Sigi and her mother. They received a thumb drive from a stranger and think it’s a message from Rin so they heard to New York City. But the thumb drive was not from Rin and the kids are going on a perilous adventure. Of course Rin only pops in here or there just at the right moment. Ozzy is starting to show some abilities so it seems that he is an apprentice to Rin and it is looking like it is going to be a long journey for his learning. Thankfully he has Sigi and Clark to help him on his path.

I didn’t realize that this is the second book in the series. I didn’t have a problem following along but I think reading the first book would add more to the story. Ozzy is a great kid and so is Sigi. I have to say that Clark had me in stitches throughout the story. I had reserved feeling about Rin but he came through too.

It was easy to get into this story and hard to finish and leave this world. This is a great read for any age and I completely loved it. I’m going to have to go back and read the first book to see what I missed. I also didn’t realize that Obert Skye was the author of the Leven Thumps series, I have seen it and wanted to read it. I think I will be digging into that one too.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.

The Lady Raven
A Dark Cinderella Tale
by Rebecca Henry
Genre: Dark Fantasy
In The Lady Raven, Rebecca Henry tells the tale of Zezolla, a little
princess abandoned by her father into the hands of her evil

think but all is not as it appears. The reader is soon drawn into a
web of witchcraft, lies and deceit, and gradually realises that this
is no typical fairy tale but a dark and macabre take on one. Zezolla
is treated with the utmost cruelty, neglected and vilified, and left
to live in the damp cellars of the castle. The only friends Zezolla
has are her beloved raven and her pet wolf. Her only comfort lies in
the loyalty of the creatures of the forest and her mother’s hazel
tree. Will Zezolla have the power to escape her torment and
ultimately save herself from the unscrupulous clutches of the king?
The Lady Raven is a compelling tale and one that is not for the

Bree, Taylor and Alissa grew up without a father and a mother that is working all the time. Bree has essential taken care of her siblings from the very beginning. Bree has returned how to find Alissa’s backpack on the porch and then received a text message confirming that someone has kidnapped Bree. Bree goes on the hunt for both Alissa and Taylor but discovers the kidnapper knows more about her family and is determined to get some revenge.

Bree is making the best of a rough situation when she get a text message that puts her on the race to save her little sister. As we follow along we start learning the bad and horrible about the Walker family. We are also kept on our toes trying to figure out who the kidnapper could be.

This is a great thriller that sucked me in and kept me in its grasp until the mad dash to the end. This is a great thriller and one to check out.

Amy Fox is a new angel that is part of a team that takes care of those that have escaped justice in our world. But Amy goes beyond what she is supposed to and is on the verge of being punished for it. She also has a thing for her partner which is another rule that she is breaking. But things start to get tense when rivals want to shut down her Unit, she is having father issues, and so much more.

Amy is still fighting those that deserve karma but she doesn’t like the rules she has to play by and bucks them every chance she gets. I loved learning more about the Unit and those that want to close it down. Of course Amy has father issues she doesn’t tell anyone so that come back to bite her.

Over all this is a very good sequel to The Deal. Amy is a great avenging angel. It’s a good read and I recommend reading the series in order so you get more detail. But you can read this book first without being too lost. I am very curious to see what trouble Amy gets into in the next book.

Rowan Burris was crushed when the boy she loves left with another girl. She runs away but finds herself caught and held captive. Ten years later she escapes and lands right in the lap of the guy that broke her heart. She still feels for Bam Bam but she feels responsible for the other girls she left in captivity. Bam Bam’s life has changed since Rowan knew him but he is the perfect person to help her.

Since I have been helping share this book for a last month or so I was really excited to see what was going to happen. The blurb had me captivated but the book left me breathless. Rowan’s brother doesn’t want Bam Bam around his sister and does something that breaks them up. Bam Bam became part of a motorcycle club and has changed a lot but still finds he loves Rowan.

As for Rowan, my heart went out to her and the pain of betrayal from Bam Bam. But that was nothing compared to the hell she lived in for ten years. This is a tough topic but Colbie Kay did an amazing job writing it. I loved how Rowan was determined to help the other women.

This is one heck of a ride for a story with twists and turns and a wonderful relationship coming into bloom after such a betrayal. If you like the MC romance story or just want a serious alpha male romance you need to check this book out. Now I’m curious about the other books in this series.

Falcon of Imenotash by Holly Bargo

The emperor of the Harudin Empire needs an heir and cannot produce one of his own body. He orders the most worthy of his worthless sisters to wed and produce an heir. That sister, Aridis, chooses Edan and offers him a promotion from captain of the palace guard of Imenotash to king. He accepts his queen’s proposal. Their mutual respect evolves into attraction and–dared they admit it–love. Displeased by his sister’s choice and unable to dissolve the newlyweds’ union, the emperor summons them to the capital city. Humiliation and degradation follow. The peasant-born warrior and the concubine’s daughter have little opportunity to restore their honor and dignity, but they’re keeping secrets from the emperor that may prove his doom.

This fantasy romance novella contains mature content not suitable for readers under 18 years old.

About the Author

I’ve been writing stories since I was old enough to put pencil to paper. My mother raised me on books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, Carol Ryrie Brink, Elizabeth George Speare, Marguerite Henry, and Walter Farley. Wilder and Farley are probably contributing factors to my decades-long love affair with horses, particularly Morgans.

Horses comprise a significant part of my life. We didn’t live on a farm and my parents didn’t like horses, but that didn’t stop me. I bought my first horse weeks before my 15th birthday with money earned from working at the family’s ice cream parlor. Having passed 50 years old, I still have horses, two of which are Morgans.

In my early teens I started reading romance and fantasy: Danielle Steel, Barbara Cartland, Jude Devereaux, Jayne Anne Krentz, David Eddings, Robin McKinley, R. A. Salvatore, Jack Chalker, Orson Scott Card. Years later, I quit devouring everything the library had to offer and started narrowing my choices. I wrote for the high school newspaper and got a few encouraging nibbles on short stories submitted to magazines.

In college I majored in English, because literature is my “thing.” Except, I didn’t want to read the musty old stuff written by long dead men; I wanted to write and be read.

Fast forward to now, after 30 years of marriage, two children (one in college and the other serving in the military), I never lost that habit of writing, regardless of how little encouragement–or even active discouragement–I received.

So, now I write romance and paranormal romance. I enjoy writing it and hope you enjoy reading it.

The Emperor doesn’t have an heir so he orders his sister, Aridis Queen of Imenotash, to marry and have a child. She chooses Edan, her Captain of the Guard which infuriates the Emperor. Together they slowly start to love and care for each other. But the emperor is not going to take this insult and does everything he can to exact revenge for her decision. But there is much more to the Emperor and Queen than outward appearance and things are going to get worse before they get better.

This is a great, quick fantasy story that caught my attention right away. Aridis is a level headed ruler that is determined to rule in a man’s world and against numerous odds. I love the relationship between Edan and her. They are such a great couple that go through hell for their marriage.

This is a quick read and the first book of Holly Bargo’s that I have had the pleasure of reading. I am hooked and need to catch up on her work. Definitely check this book out, you won’t be disappointed.

Excerpt: Descension

I weave through morning commuters and camped-out homeless people like a crochet needle to catch the train south to Times Square.  On rainy, late-fall days like today, the underground is hot, crowded, and emits a foul stench that forces you to breathe through your mouth.  The tracks shriek as the train comes to a halt. The steel doors open and a swarm of urbanites exits onto the platform.  I stand to the left side of the door, waiting for an opportunity to squeeze in, as it’s too early for Monday-morning shoving matches. I slide in, finding cramped standing room between a perspiring, heavyset man and a teenage boy whose urban music I can hear blasting through his earphones. An automated announcement comes over the speaker system as the doors close.

“November is Concerned Citizens Month. The City of New York asks that you know your neighbors and colleagues. If you believe someone is jeopardizing the safety of our city, state, or country, it is your duty to report it, or you will be aiding in domestic terror. Become a concerned citizen; our safety depends on it.”

Violet St. Karl’s love affair with science fiction and fantasy began at the tender age of four when she first saw Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, but nearly three decades passed before she started transferring the stories in her head onto the computer screen. Unbeknownst to Violet at the time of signing her lease, her Upper West Side apartment was the former site of Edgar Allen Poe’s old farmhouse, where he completed writing the Raven. However, she didn’t begin writing until receiving another sign from the universe a year later. While spending extensive time in Barcelona, she learned her flat once belonged to Mercè Rodoreda i Gurguí, a famous Catalan writer, an indication that living in the former residences of famous dead authors was no coincidence, but a sign to start writing.

After over a decade in New York, Violet recently returned to her roots in the Detroit area where is an advocate and proud Ambassador of the Authors Guild. When not writing or focused on strengthening the local literary community, she is planning which country to explore next.

Liri has recently lost her job and has no money. A friend tells her about a company that is buying blood from people with O- blood. Then she hears that I virus has been released in New York City and she goes with the ABO company to a secure island. The question is if she is really safe or is there more in the works than what is originally known.

This is an interesting read and I have mixed feelings about it. My heart goes out to Liri with her loss of job and money. I really felt for her but was skeptical about ABO. Then you get news notes about a virus being released without much information. I felt confused at what the emergency was since nothing really gave it that feel.

Then on the island we go from panic to a romance with Sirius in a controlling environment. If things were so horrible you think that Liri would be more worried about the virus on the island or why she was being controlled like she was in a science experiment.

I was really curious about the O- blood type since that is my blood type. But there really wasn’t a lot of information about how important that was. And the twist at the ending? The book ended at a super fast pace, not really fully explaining everything with an unexpected twist.

This was an interesting story. I really thought it would be a dystopian story and didn’t expect the ending. I really think that this book needs a good review and some fine tuning to make it a better story. I may or may not read the next book in the series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.

You’ve had three novels published. Please talk about the publication process. What advice do you have for aspiring writers?

Major publishers can only be approached through agents. Landing an agent is more difficult than attracting an independent publisher, which is more difficult than writing a novel.

Kirkus Reviews called my first novel Birds of Passage, An Italian Immigrant Coming of Age Story, a “riveting debut novel” that was “a refreshing rethink of the archetypal mafia novel.” The agency that represents Mario Puzo’s estate, one of many literary representatives I approached, said that anything in the genre without Puzo or Corleone attached was a tough sell. Agents will read a chapter or two before rejecting or requesting the manuscript. Writers must compose an opening section that sings on the page. Invest in professional editing. You’ll only get one shot to impress.

Kirkus Reviews featured my second novel, Appointment with ISIL, An Anthony Provati Thriller in their January 2017 newsletter calling the novel “a roller-coaster ride to the finish, this book confirms Giordano as a writer to eagerly watch.” I approached another slew of literary agents. Half never responded.

For Drone Strike, I changed tactics, attending Thrillerfest in New York and pitching agents face-to-face. For many of my fellow attending authors, they found this a nerve-racking experience. A few agents requested the manuscript and although none accepted my work, the personal approach proved to be my best shot, and I’ll pitch at Thrillerfest again when my fourth book is ready.

Birds of Passage required two years from start to publication in October 2015. Following a professional critique and multiple rewrites, Harvard Square Editions expressed interest but requested another edit and rewrite before they accepted the novel. Both Appointment with ISIL, and Drone Strike, my just-published second book in the Anthony Provati series, went through a similar process.

While many writers pursue the self-publish route, I prefer to run the independent publishing gauntlet both to confirm the quality of my work and for the prestige of being published.

My advice for writers is to read a lot and write a lot. Criticism comes by the barrelful. Self-doubt is your enemy. Don’t be deterred. Use rejection to incentivize improvement. Persistence is an underappreciated success factor. Recognize that most writers take an unintended vow of poverty, you’ll spend hours isolated, reading and writing, and you’ll pray that your work will be appreciated and accepted. These life-style descriptors also apply to cloistered nuns and monks.

My Review
5 stars

Karim loves his family and is doing everything to keep them safe in Iraq. But an American drone strike kills them and he if full of hatred. The Islamic State in the Levant convince him that the best way to get revenge is to perform a terrorist attack on American soil. This begins a long journey for Karim to revenge for the loss of his family.

Karim then meets Miriam, a woman that has lost her family to the same men encouraging him to attack the Americans. He does doubt his mission since his shared pain and loss brings him closer to Miriam. But he is still going through with the plan. Anthony Provati is called in to stop Karim which starts a chase that will cross the globe.

This is an action packed thriller that makes you think. Karim is not your typical bad guy. He has lost his family and consumed by grief. Then someone comes along and sounds like they care but all they are doing is twisting his pain into their agenda. I liked his relationship with Miriam and thought this was a great addition to this story.

I did read Appointment with ISIL and really liked Anthony. Unfortunately he doesn’t really make much of an appearance until the middle of the story then things really take off. It makes the beginning of the book not really feel like an Anthony Provati story.

Now, having said that this is a great book and one that I recommend checking out. It makes a great point that not all bad guys are your classic movie bad guy. There are shades of grey in this world and people that are not really your friend but just using you for their gains.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.
