Collection of the Negatives (The Blood Rising Book 1)

Publication Date: January 11th, 2019

Genre: Sci-fi/ New Adult

In a world with skyrocketing inflation and unemployment, blood has become the new commodity, and the rarer your blood type, the more it’s worth.

After losing her job and watching her savings dwindle, Liri is persuaded by a resourceful friend to sell her blood to ABO Blood Group, where she learns she is O Negative, the most valuable and sought after blood.

Unable to afford living in New York City, Liri reluctantly decides to move back home and live with her parents, but her plan is interrupted when a virus is maliciously unleashed onto the island of Manhattan, resulting in a citywide quarantine. Before being able to devise an alternative plan, she is secretly informed of a covert mission by ABO to evacuate Negatives out of NYC. Although reluctant to trust them, it’s her only viable choice to stay alive, but unbeknown to Liri, she and the Negatives are vital to activating opposing agendas on Earth and beyond.

Excerpt: Descension

I weave through morning commuters and camped-out homeless people like a crochet needle to catch the train south to Times Square.  On rainy, late-fall days like today, the underground is hot, crowded, and emits a foul stench that forces you to breathe through your mouth.  The tracks shriek as the train comes to a halt. The steel doors open and a swarm of urbanites exits onto the platform.  I stand to the left side of the door, waiting for an opportunity to squeeze in, as it’s too early for Monday-morning shoving matches. I slide in, finding cramped standing room between a perspiring, heavyset man and a teenage boy whose urban music I can hear blasting through his earphones. An automated announcement comes over the speaker system as the doors close.

“November is Concerned Citizens Month. The City of New York asks that you know your neighbors and colleagues. If you believe someone is jeopardizing the safety of our city, state, or country, it is your duty to report it, or you will be aiding in domestic terror. Become a concerned citizen; our safety depends on it.”

About the Author

Violet St. Karl’s love affair with science fiction and fantasy began at the tender age of four when she first saw Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, but nearly three decades passed before she started transferring the stories in her head onto the computer screen. Unbeknownst to Violet at the time of signing her lease, her Upper West Side apartment was the former site of Edgar Allen Poe’s old farmhouse, where he completed writing the Raven. However, she didn’t begin writing until receiving another sign from the universe a year later. While spending extensive time in Barcelona, she learned her flat once belonged to Mercè Rodoreda i Gurguí, a famous Catalan writer, an indication that living in the former residences of famous dead authors was no coincidence, but a sign to start writing.

After over a decade in New York, Violet recently returned to her roots in the Detroit area where is an advocate and proud Ambassador of the Authors Guild. When not writing or focused on strengthening the local literary community, she is planning which country to explore next.

My Review

3 Stars

Liri has recently lost her job and has no money. A friend tells her about a company that is buying blood from people with O- blood. Then she hears that I virus has been released in New York City and she goes with the ABO company to a secure island. The question is if she is really safe or is there more in the works than what is originally known.

This is an interesting read and I have mixed feelings about it. My heart goes out to Liri with her loss of job and money. I really felt for her but was skeptical about ABO. Then you get news notes about a virus being released without much information. I felt confused at what the emergency was since nothing really gave it that feel.

Then on the island we go from panic to a romance with Sirius in a controlling environment. If things were so horrible you think that Liri would be more worried about the virus on the island or why she was being controlled like she was in a science experiment.

I was really curious about the O- blood type since that is my blood type. But there really wasn’t a lot of information about how important that was. And the twist at the ending? The book ended at a super fast pace, not really fully explaining everything with an unexpected twist.

This was an interesting story. I really thought it would be a dystopian story and didn’t expect the ending. I really think that this book needs a good review and some fine tuning to make it a better story. I may or may not read the next book in the series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.

You’ve had three novels published. Please talk about the publication process. What advice do you have for aspiring writers?

Major publishers can only be approached through agents. Landing an agent is more difficult than attracting an independent publisher, which is more difficult than writing a novel.

Kirkus Reviews called my first novel Birds of Passage, An Italian Immigrant Coming of Age Story, a “riveting debut novel” that was “a refreshing rethink of the archetypal mafia novel.” The agency that represents Mario Puzo’s estate, one of many literary representatives I approached, said that anything in the genre without Puzo or Corleone attached was a tough sell. Agents will read a chapter or two before rejecting or requesting the manuscript. Writers must compose an opening section that sings on the page. Invest in professional editing. You’ll only get one shot to impress.

Kirkus Reviews featured my second novel, Appointment with ISIL, An Anthony Provati Thriller in their January 2017 newsletter calling the novel “a roller-coaster ride to the finish, this book confirms Giordano as a writer to eagerly watch.” I approached another slew of literary agents. Half never responded.

For Drone Strike, I changed tactics, attending Thrillerfest in New York and pitching agents face-to-face. For many of my fellow attending authors, they found this a nerve-racking experience. A few agents requested the manuscript and although none accepted my work, the personal approach proved to be my best shot, and I’ll pitch at Thrillerfest again when my fourth book is ready.

Birds of Passage required two years from start to publication in October 2015. Following a professional critique and multiple rewrites, Harvard Square Editions expressed interest but requested another edit and rewrite before they accepted the novel. Both Appointment with ISIL, and Drone Strike, my just-published second book in the Anthony Provati series, went through a similar process.

While many writers pursue the self-publish route, I prefer to run the independent publishing gauntlet both to confirm the quality of my work and for the prestige of being published.

My advice for writers is to read a lot and write a lot. Criticism comes by the barrelful. Self-doubt is your enemy. Don’t be deterred. Use rejection to incentivize improvement. Persistence is an underappreciated success factor. Recognize that most writers take an unintended vow of poverty, you’ll spend hours isolated, reading and writing, and you’ll pray that your work will be appreciated and accepted. These life-style descriptors also apply to cloistered nuns and monks.

My Review
5 stars

Karim loves his family and is doing everything to keep them safe in Iraq. But an American drone strike kills them and he if full of hatred. The Islamic State in the Levant convince him that the best way to get revenge is to perform a terrorist attack on American soil. This begins a long journey for Karim to revenge for the loss of his family.

Karim then meets Miriam, a woman that has lost her family to the same men encouraging him to attack the Americans. He does doubt his mission since his shared pain and loss brings him closer to Miriam. But he is still going through with the plan. Anthony Provati is called in to stop Karim which starts a chase that will cross the globe.

This is an action packed thriller that makes you think. Karim is not your typical bad guy. He has lost his family and consumed by grief. Then someone comes along and sounds like they care but all they are doing is twisting his pain into their agenda. I liked his relationship with Miriam and thought this was a great addition to this story.

I did read Appointment with ISIL and really liked Anthony. Unfortunately he doesn’t really make much of an appearance until the middle of the story then things really take off. It makes the beginning of the book not really feel like an Anthony Provati story.

Now, having said that this is a great book and one that I recommend checking out. It makes a great point that not all bad guys are your classic movie bad guy. There are shades of grey in this world and people that are not really your friend but just using you for their gains.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.

Moon Games

Description Moon Games by Shelly Frome

At the outset, Miranda Davis has nothing much going for her. The tourists are long gone by October in the quaint Carolina town of Black Mountain, her realty business is at a standstill, and her weekend stint managing the local tavern offers little to pull her out of the doldrums. When prominent church lady Cloris Raintree offers a stipend to look into the whereabouts of a missing coed, Miranda, along with her partner Harry (an unemployed features writer) agree.

But then it all backfires. A burly figure shambles down a mountain slope with a semi-conscious girl draped over his shoulder. Miranda’s attempts to uncover Cloris Raintree’s true motives become near impossible.  The local police keep stonewalling and Harry is of little help.

Tarot cards left on Cloris’ doorstep only exacerbate the situation. Growing more desperate over the captive girl’s fate, Miranda comes across a link to a cold case of arson and murder. With the advent of the dark of the moon, she is summoned to “Tower Time” as this twisty tale continues to unravel.

Praise Moon Games by Shelly Frome

“’Moon Games’ is an exceptional novel that will introduce the reader to the protagonist of the book, Miranda Davis who lives in a quaint town in Carolina, and it is here that she has a business. The reader will follow Miranda as she is approached by Cloris Raintree, a church leader who offers Miranda help in exchange for her help in finding a girl who went missing. As Miranda investigate the strange disappearance, more shocking truths are revealed and this book lovers is the premise of the sensational Moon Games.

The themes combined and laced throughout Moon Games perfectly compliment the atmosphere of the book and story.  As I read Moon Games, I found myself racing through it, turning the pages with haste thanks to the addictive nature. The story is unique and has the perfect combination of crime, suspense, and mystery which are all perfectly weaved together by the exceptional author.

Every event, character, and setting is well thought out and planned. Shelly Frome’s writing is detailed in the most immaculate of ways. It is beautifully written so that the reader will be able to immerse themselves in the story from beginning to end without difficulty.

Miranda is a character every reader will be able to root for, her grit and determination to not give up on the case is inspiring and will have many readers care about her. Being able to accompany Miranda on her journey was incredible, it was remarkable to witness her growth along the way and extraordinary to observe how she goes about solving the mystery and troubling situations she was faced with

Frome is an exceptional writer because he grabs his readers attention from the start very quickly and keeps them engrossed until the end. There are no long build-ups that drag in Moon Games; instead, the reader will be thrown into the thick of the story quickly, and the result of this is exciting (and slightly terrifying!).

Overall Moon Games is a superb novel that has everything a reader would want in a story; it has a thrilling narrative, magnificent plot development and excellent characterization that will thrill and excite its readers so of course, I have to award this impressive piece of literature five stars!”-  Aimee Ann, Red Headed Book Lover

“’Moongames’, the eighth mystery by respected author, Shelly Frome, covers a week around Halloween where a coed from a local college goes missing during a hike along the historic Southern Railway tracks that climb the Blue Ridge Escarpment over the Eastern Continental Divide, and the only one who seems to care is a frustrated real estate saleswoman, who must become her own detective agency if this girl is to be found alive.
Frome creates a series of colorful characters who are drawn into this quest, most against their wills, but who, never-the-less, contribute their own special talents to what would ultimately prove to be a race to the finish, with more hairpin turns along the way than the drive along the Amalfi Coast. The famous “Malecon” drive along Havana’s Atlantic shore even plays an important role in the ultimate outcome of this complicated, yet gripping tale of revenge, regret, and greed, with a dash of the Zodiac (thus the Moon) thrown in for good measure.”-       R. V. Helms, Amazon Review

Praise Secluded Village Murders by Shelly Frome

“ In this cozy murder, Emily Ryder, a tour guide turned amateur sleuth, attempts to solve the murder of her mentor, Chris Cooper. His death has been ruled accidental. Murder just couldn’t happen in the small town of Lydfield, Connecticut, but Emily believes that Chris was murdered.

So why does Emily believe that Chris has been murdered? There are too many things that don’t make sense. And Chris had been standing in the way of a development company that wants to build an apartment and entertainment complex in their quaint little town.

The cover of this book shows what looks like a beautiful and peaceful place to live, but looks can be deceiving. Lies, bribery, and deceit are running rampant in this little town. Is there anyone that Emily can trust? Twists and turns are around every corner. If you read carefully enough, you might even be able to figure out who the guilty party is. If you don’t read carefully enough, there is a chance that you will lose track of what is going on.

The town of Lydfield has been twinned with Lydfield-in-the-Moor in England. Twin villages or sister towns was something that I wasn’t familiar with. According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a twin town is a town or city that shares planned activities and visits with a similar town in another country. The following article might help you gain a better understanding of twinned towns – Odd couples: 16 weird and wonderful twinned towns.

When Emily visits Lydfield’s sister town in England, she discovers that she has not left behind the danger. Well written mystery”-Lisa, Lisa’s Writopia

“An entertaining story that has enough quirky characters, intrigue, suspense, humor, and drama that easily draws the reader into Emily’s amateur sleuth adventure. This cozy mystery is full of devious plot twists and turns that will easily keep you guessing. The Secluded Village Murders is an intriguing whodunit tale that cozy mystery fans will want to add to their reading list.”- Kathleen Higgins-Anderson, Jersey Girl Book Reviews

My Review

4 Stars

Miranda Davis is a realtor and manager of a bar in the little town of Black Mountain. It’s the off season and not much is happening until Cloris Raintree asks her to look into the disappearance of a missing female hiker. She asks her partner and writer Harry to help her. But things go sideways and Miranda starts having trouble with Cloris and finds that there is a lot more happening than just a missing hiker.

This is a great mystery that had me guessing at what was really happening. Part of that was because Miranda is a bumbling and scattered detective so I had a bit of a hard time getting into the story and figuring out what was going on. But once things got on a roll I was sucked in and held tight until the reveal. A couple great twists and turns had me thrown off balance and guessing the whole time.

This is the first book from Shelly Frome that I have read but I am curious at his other books. This is a great mystery and one I recommend checking out.

“Forget poetic dreams of ghosts in the machines. We are the machine. We donated our souls to it.”

Add to Goodreads

Chapter One

Camille had three kinds of clients: those who were trying to extract funds or rare items from someone else before they died, those looking to find a loved one before they died, and regulars with a myriad of shady reasons for needing repeated, illegal services. Wren Barrett was Camille’s favorite type of the three. He was a balding account manager, from the Delta Zone, who’d come to Zeta City to find his son. Like most others arriving in Zeta for the first time, he was ill-equipped, soft, and confused.

He washed up in Camille’s office like a beached manatee: gasping for air and bleached by the sun. Her office walls were stark white, as was her desk and other furniture, and even the floor, giving the woman herself the appearance of a smudge on a piece of blank paper.

Camille wore a grey tank top, black shorts, and she was unadorned aside from her wrist mounted reality augmentation device. The device’s long touch-sensitive screen and pad ran down her forearm; her RAP was an impressive piece of technology that marked her as wealthy and well connected. She also had a mop of frizzy, black hair that hung raggedly around her ears.

While Wren Barrett spoke, Camille sipped on an orange juice box straw and watched him closely. Mr. Barrett’s son was dying. Sashi Barrett was born dying, even more so than the rest of us. Sashi had a heart condition that made life a painful struggle. So, Sashi did what many people from all over the world do when they want to die; he came to Zeta City.

Zeta City was the capital of the Zeta Net, so-called because the entire area was covered by a wireless network designed to upload people’s consciousness at the time of death and store it in the Node’s massive computer system. Zeta was not the only Net, there were dozens of others, but many people chose Zeta because Zeta was the first netted city in the world.

Generations of people made pilgrimages to Zeta before the other Nets were built, and now some people superstitiously clung to it as the place to go to die. Maybe it was because Zeta gave the world the first promise of a tangible afterlife. “Going to die in Zeta” was the new “going to church on Sunday.”

“You can find Sashi?” Mr. Barrett asked sadly, “you can keep him alive?”

“I can find him and keep him alive, more or less, until you’re ready to let him go into the Node. I accept cash and other forms of payment. You know what I mean,” Camille said.

“Of course. I’ll transfer two-thousand Node Points to you, as a thank you for your service, along with four hundred in cash. Does that work?”

“No rush. We’ll sort it once it’s over, Wren.”

When Camille stood up to shake Mr. Barrett’s hands, he was surprised to see that she that she was a thick woman with large breasts and the hint of a belly. He was expecting a fit, muscled mercenary. Then he realized, there was no reason for her to be fit, most of her bounties couldn’t run away. . . . .

Camille found Sashi, who was a boy – twenty at the most – in an alley two blocks from the Water Street Gate, in an area known for drug abuse and homelessness. He was a heap of bones and in dirty, Central Charity-issued clothes. His method of suicide, a drawn-out opiate overdose, was not doing him any favors. Camille double-checked the hologram on her wrist RAP to verify his identity, and then crouched next to him.

“You wanna tell me why you’re trying to die?” Camille asked him softly. He took a moment to answer. It was clear that he hadn’t carried on a conversation for quite some time.

“Death in the Node has got to be better than life here.” He struggled.

Her suicidal bounties always gave some form of that same statement as their reason for killing themselves.

“You got enough Node Points, kiddo? Don’t want to die without enough of those NPs.” Camille always asked her dying bounties some form of that question. It turned out that Sashi had more than enough Node Points to have a comfortable afterlife. The wealth that afforded his addiction would also support him in death. It wasn’t supposed to work that way, that wasn’t how the Founders set it up, but the Founders were long gone down the Node’s rabbit hole.

“Do you want to see your dad before you go? He’s the one who sent me,” Camille asked. Sashi’s dull eyes lit up, and faded just as fast.

“I won’t make it through the hour,” he mumbled.

“It’s okay. I have a Confiner.” Camille tapped her wrist RAP. She called Mr. Barrett and then hovered over Sashi in the alley for the rest of the afternoon. The device within her wrist RAP stabilized the electronic version of Sashi’s mind inside his body, and it would last as long as she was close to him. Once she turned off the Confiner or moved away from the deceased, his consciousness would release into the Net and, eventually, be uploaded into the Node. The technology wasn’t above the table, but it was also quite rare.

Camille would have preferred moving Sashi to her place, which functioned as an office, apartment, and an occasional hospice, but he did not want to move and she was compelled to accommodate the dying. Sashi did die before his father came, forcing Camille to use the Confiner.

Camille often chased after debtors and thieves who were trying to die before they could be seized. She would hold them, in their dead, damaged bodies until they resolved their issues with their victims or creditors. But some days, like that day with Sashi, were just sad and slow. On these days, Camille felt like an angel, guiding the broken home.

She stood about fifteen feet away from Mr. Barrett and his dead son (the farthest that the Confiner could reach and still hold the dead in place) as they spoke softly and tearfully. The boy’s mother, who had been estranged from both of them, showed up.

Afterward, Camille went home to her apartment, which was on the other side of a door in the back of her office. She left the clinical, white room for the for the chaos and color of her own apartment. She checked her wrist RAP to make sure that Mr. Barrett had transferred the promised Points. Satisfied, she unhooked the device from her wrist and set it on her coffee table. She sat down on her sofa and cried for several minutes before tearfully ordering wild mushroom soup and crusty bread from her favorite diner.

The next morning, Camille received a call from her least favorite kind of client, a regular named Cody. He wanted Camille to extract a young woman, named Toy, from an old cabin on the edge of Zeta’s bayou and bring her to Camille’s office, if possible. Otherwise, Camille was to confine Toy in place until Cody arrived.

My Review
5 Stars

I have heard about the HIIT workout and thought it was just the new exercise fad. When I saw this book was on tour I decided to check it out, I’m always looking for new ways to exercise. But being overweight and having back problems I was reluctant. The first thing I noticed was the information and a note that this can be done with any level of fitness. First check to the good.

The book starts out with a lot of good information about exercise like the things to do and to avoid, the importance of diet, and tips about how little things make a big difference with weight loss. From there we go into the exercises. They are quick and to the point. You will only do a couple minutes but you will know that you were doing some exercise.

I really enjoyed this book. It has a lot of good information and is designed for you to customize your workouts. If you are looking to get in shape and/or lose weight you need to check out this book. I will be adding this one to my shelf and using it for quite a while.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.
