A creature lying dormant beneath the Earth’s crust for over 35,000 years, waits patiently to transform a dying young boy into one of mankind’s greatest leaders in a time of dire need.
In the year 2140 CE, Planet 9, more commonly known as Vixus, has resurfaced on the edge of the Milky Way… the only known planet that periodically reverses its rotation. Last seen in the middle of the Kuiper Belt in 2066 CE, it mysteriously disappeared after being discovered by a Galactic Corps scout ship. The unknown energy source enabling Vixus to spin in opposite directions represented great power which could help turn the tide in a war Earth was losing.
The Fighting Fury, the Corps’ finest platoon, has been called in to conduct a search and rescue operation for several missing landing parties. Following a fierce battle on the planet surface, Lieutenant Janet “Cat” Miles, leader of this elite group of combat women, was captured. She soon found herself imprisoned with the Corps’ most fabled leader, Commander Jason Cody. His name would forever be linked to the infamous wormhole hidden on Neptune’s dark side; an area of space now cautiously avoided by all due to the menace which lurks within.
Paranoia raced through both leaders’ minds. Could he trust a woman who seemingly had no imperfections? Could she trust a man who had vanished from sight years ago? Earth’s future laid in the balance as they struggled to overcome their mutual distrust and acknowledge what those before them understood: “If you live long enough, the wisdom will come.”

The Cat Who Pawed the Cultist
Sanctum Guardians Book 1
by Robert Hazelton
Genre: YA Urban Fantasy
Charlotte Barreau has tried to maintain a low key lifestyle but it isn’t easy
for a young witch. As a student of the Holstrom Sanctum, she’s
studied the intricacies of magic but never had to apply them to
anything of importance. Her biggest concerns involve finding a movie
she hasn’t seen, spending time with her friend Avery, and passing
magical physics. All that changes when she meets a feisty orange cat
attempting to foil the plot of a cultist opening a portal to another
world. This magical beast comes to her with a calling, a duty to
defend our world against denizens of a dangerous realm called the
Umbra Oculus. Charlotte finds herself inextricably bound to her new
friend, a partner in his crusade. As they begin to investigate, they
find themselves dangerously outmatched. Their opponents are fully
trained, adult wizards with serious zeal for their work. Even after
enlisting the aid of two additional students, they discover they may
not be cut out for the task. But with no one else working on the
problem, these children and their cat must save the world, even as
they risk their very lives in the effort.
Robert Hazelton has been writing short fiction, novels and music his entire
life. As the founding member of Deadly Nightshade Botanical Society
and a long time member of the band Abney Park, he has traveled
extensively and performed countless shows in exotic locales.
Robert writes in a variety of genres but keeps drifting back to modern
fantasy/horror. He considers Elizabeth Moon, Frank Herbert, and
Steven Pressfield to be his biggest influences.
My Review
5 Stars

Charlotte Barreau tries to keep a low key life, especially after she is discovered with her parents murdered and her mind wiped clean. She is a fifth year student at Holstrom Sanctum and just gets by with her friend Avery and learning about magic. But one day she gets this strange feeling and investigates. This leads her to a man trying to open a demonic portal and Blaise.

Blaise is a Sanctum Guardian that is protecting this world from the nasties in the realm Umbra Oculus. But despite Blaises bravo, he is a young cat. Together it is up to Charlotte and Blaise to stop the portal from opening. And along the way Charlotte may just learn about herself too.

This is a great paranormal story. A wonderfully developed world with snarky characters just like I enjoy. Blaise reminds me of my cats and had me chuckling through this adventure. I was quickly drawn in when Blaise tells Charlotte about her connection to old magic and just made me turn the pages as fast as I could to find out what is really going on.

I recommend checking out this book. I loved it and can’t wait for the next book in the series. I didn’t realize that I had read a couple of Robert Hazelton’s others books. I think I need to check out the other ones while I wait for more from Charlotte and Blaise.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.

Excerpt
Rena faced the doors of Whilom Elementary once again. She stared at the crevices she had never taken notice of all those years walking toward them. There was no reason to turn back; it was only an urge. Just as she was about to turn away, she gazed downwards, slowly;one door was ajar.
‘She probably didn’t leave yet,’ she thought because the door was slightly open.
Although Ms. Biddock’s reaction frightened Rena, she understood the reason for her terrifying behavior: it must have been humiliating for her watching her colleagues walk away without offering to help her off the floor.
“Hmm,”she murmured, scratching her chin, contemplating about whether to shut the door. “Maybe Ms. Biddock has cooled down and will offer her apologizes tome.”
She was eager to give Ms. Biddock the opportunity to do so. With each passing minute, which had only been about three, since the time of the “closing of the door,” she decided to take that chance.
“Hello?Hello?” She peeked, bug-eyed, tentatively pushing the doors ajar. “Can anyone hear me?”
Sunlight had shone through the old classroom windows; its rays beamed vibrantly through the unclosed entries, and into the deserted hallways.
She walked inside and stopped at the corner of the hallway that led to Ms. Biddock’s office. The entrance was welcoming; the light was on, an indication that she was still there. Rena proceeded, soundlessly, until a distant voice was perceived, mumbling; she believed it to be that of the principal … Ms. Biddock.
“Maybe the teachers came back,” Rena whispered under her breath. “She can’t be talking to herself.”
“I’ve used many words to describe what I seek! I’ve searched for passages until blood showed on my feet!”
Rena stopped; her eyes grew larger; she looked to her left and then to her right.
“Or—maybe I was wrong.” She remained still, and then the bellowing chant had startled her yet again.
“I have asked repeatedly, help with my finding, the place where these memories and I were residing!”
Darkness rapidly supplanted the sun’s warm rays right before a storm produced instantaneously. Ear-piercing thunder resonated within the school building, consolidated with twisting winds that had abruptly slammed all the doors shut. Rena’s trembling hands capped her ears, and her eyes squinted as she flinched with pain. It was in that moment when she had decided—it was time to leave; however,a similar overwhelming urge enticed her just as it had on the school’s front steps: whether Ms. Biddock would apologize.
With eyes half-closed, Rena moved through the vigorous winds, and victoriously achieved the course that would conduct to her desired direction by way of the light glaring through the frosted glass atop the office entryway. She extended her arms outward and expressed perseverance, striving for Ms. Biddock’s door, and seized hold of the doorknob.
She triumphed in achieving her arduous grasp.
With tremoring hands and all her weight—all ninety pounds, Rena pushed upon thedoor, until there was an opportunity; little by little it opened; she persisted her fight against the storm, but she wasn’t strong enough; the winds on the other side were as vigorous, prompting her strength to weaken. The slight access she had obtained—closed; nonetheless, she refused to give up, and shoved again upon that office door, hard, and then even harder. It was surely opening, slightly, and more, and then more; she hurriedly stuck her foot inside, wiggling within the snug opening; then instantly, she was intrigued by the ceiling turned open sky of stupendous swirling clouds, the roaring of deep rumbles of thunder, and bursts of flashes of lightning!
She dominated the rattling door with one hand while the other kept back her‘tangled hair in the wind’ away from her face. Then, staring at her was a woman with piercing, glowing green eyes, which Rena had imagined, derived from the flashes of lightning.
“Ms.… Biddock?” she questioned aloud over twisting winds.
Coolly, Ms. Biddock turned away. She held out her arms under the blustery sky, aiming her gold, etched wand, as lightning strikes soared out of its wooden tip.
Rena distinguished one of the letters carved into the wand—the letter M; afterward, she was drawn to an outlandish desk, covered by an old, green leather-bound book, with bright lights beaming out of its oversized pages.
Ms.Biddock lowered her arms; her black layered gown waved simultaneously with her loose hair blowing wildly.
“Didn’t I tell you to leave!” she yelled.

My Review
5 Stars

A young girl goes missing at a summer camp and three months later her body is found. When a senator’s girl goes missing Eva Rae Thomas is asked to look into the disappearance. But Eva has a lot on her plate already. She went through a divorce, has moved her three girls back to her hometown, and is dealing with the girls acting out. Even if she promised not to work again she is asked to and can’t say no to the mother.

This is a great story with a lot happening. Eva is good at her job but broken from the divorce. Besides, how can you tell a grieving mother no when they ask you to find their daughter. Although there is a lot happening in this book it was very easy to keep up with the different events.

I have loved Willow Rose’s books since I started reviewing books many years ago. She is an amazing writer that draws you in with her writing and leaves you wanting more. This is the first in a new series and I can’t wait to read more about Eva Rae Thomas.

My Review
5 Stars

James is out hunting with his father but would rather be out with his friends. His father is trying to teach him about surviving out in the world. But things go south when they are attacked by a horde of zombies. James is not going to have to rely on the survival training his father did with him and his dog Duke to make it home to his family.

I am a sucker for a good zombie story and Dead State Fallout is one of those books. James would rather be anywhere than out hunting with his dad. But after they are attacked he relies on those skills that his father was teaching him to get back home.

There are dangers around every corner and some of his decisions left me scratching my head. But I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read the next book in the series. If you like YA zombie stories you need to check out this book.

Stick Together (The Awkward Squad – 2) by Sophie Henaff

Officer Anne Capestan and her squad of misfits must turn their attention to a more personal case–the murder of Capestan’s ex-husband’s father, a lifelong member of the Paris police force who had no shortage of enemies.

After their successful solving of three cold cases and exposing corruption at the very highest levels of the Paris police force, Officer Anne Capestan’s team of oddballs and no-hopers should be in a celebratory mood. However, now despised by their colleagues at 36, quai des Orfevres and worried for their future, morale has never been lower among the members of the Awkward Squad.
Capestan is doing her best to motivate the team, but even she cannot maintain a cheerful facade when she has been assigned to investigate the murder of Officer Serge Rufus, the father of her ex-husband. Worse, it soon appears that his murder is linked to two other victims, both of whom were warned by the killer before they struck.
Can Capestan marshal the forces to solve another hopeless mystery, or will her team’s previous success be proven just a fluke?

My Review

4 Stars

Anne Capestan’s team did an amazing job solving three cold cases and showing the level of corruption in the police department. But that has had the opposite effect with them being even more hated. Things are not going to get better when Anne is asked to look into the murder of her ex-father in law. It seems his case is similar to two others where the victims were warned by the killer before they became the next victim.

This is a great sequel to The Awkward Squad. The team is down and depressed even after their big win. They are not hated more so for their exposure of the corruption. Anne doesn’t know if she can rally her team to look into her ex-father in laws death. But the group comes together with snark and humor to help find the killer.

I really liked the first book and enjoyed Stick Together. It is full of humor and I just love how the rejects are the ones solving the cases. This is a wonderful series and I can’t wait to see what the Awkward Squad gets into next.

The Good Inside Me

The Good Inside Me
by Barbara Russell
Genre: YA Paranormal Romance
Dragons, short-tempered archdemons, and hysterical damned souls—Shax is used
to dealing with all that. He’s a young fire demon and lives in
Hell, after all. What he’s not used to is being possessed by a
human. A very good human and a pretty girl at that: sixteen-year-old
Tolis. Despite still having control of his body most of the time,
Shax can hear Tolis’s voice inside his head and feels what she
feels constantly.
Shax’s mentor claims that Tolis hides an ancient, powerful grimoire, a book
of spells, and proposes a deal: if Shax finds it, he’ll help Shax
get work as a dragon keeper—Shax’s dream job. Tolis swears she
doesn’t have the grimoire and asks Shax to help her father, whose
soul is turning evil by the minute. Unless Tolis does something, her
dad’s soul will end in Hell. Hoping to convince her to give him the
grimoire, and not because Shax cares about the man’s soul, he
agrees to help.
Goodness is overrated. Since Shax decided to help Tolis, his life has turned
into a hurdle race. Thugs chase him, the scientists in Hell want to
prod and examine the first possessed demon in history, and he can’t
find the darn grimoire.
And the worst part? Due to the unavoidable presence of Tolis, who keeps
intruding into his evil thoughts, Shax discovers an almost decent
side of himself. In no time at all, he catches himself doing actual
good deeds. Is he becoming—yuck—good?
I’m an entomologist and a soil biologist, which is a fancy way to say
that I dig in the dirt, looking for bugs. Nature and books have
always been my passion. I was a kid when I read The Lord Of The Ring
and fell in love with fantasy novels.
When I discovered cozy mystery and crime novels, I fell in love with
Hercules Poirot and Sherlock Holmes. Then I grew up and . . . Nah,
I’m joking. I didn’t grow up. Don’t grow up, folks! It’s a trap.
PS I hate gardening. There, I said it. Sorry fellow Kiwis.
My Review
5 Stars

Shax is a fifth level demon in hell working to get his sixth level where he can get his own grimoire. The last test he has to pass is a possession test. He is to possess sixteen year old Tolis, a girl full of goodness. But things go sideways and he ends up being possessed by Tolis. Shax’s mentor insists that Tolis has a grimoire and the only way to stop the possession is to find it.

Tolis has no idea what he is talking about and convinces Shax to help her father who seems to be going to hell in a hand basket. But one good deed starts leading to another and before he knows it Shax seems to be turning a new leaf for a demon.

I really enjoyed this book. It has a fresh take on the bad guys. I mean Shax is a demon and we know that he is supposed to be doing bad things but you can’t help liking him and hoping that things will work out for the best.

This is a great story and one that I recommend checking out. This is the first book of Barbara Russell’s that I have read but it won’t be my last.

Excerpt

A solitary scrap of paper was swept from the cold pavement by the updraft. The gust of wind lifted my hair and ghosted a frigid breath across my neck, causing the hairs there to stand on end. I’d come to this small town chasing a dream, but not the kind that beckons a person to great things. No, the dream that had brought me here is the kind that leaves you huddled in a corner, quietly sobbing.

Two months had passed since the nightmares began, and I hadn’t had a decent night’s sleep since. Even as I thought about it, flashes of the nightmare came to the front of my mind, and I quickly veered my thoughts away to keep the images at bay.

Somehow, I thought coming here to Carver’s Corner would make it better. This place was featured in the nightly horror show that my dreams had become. Being here didn’t make the dream come into clarity or logically fall into place. I had never been to this town and probably would not have missed its presence in my life if I hadn’t been beckoned here by the insistent dreams.

My grandmother insisted that we had some cunning folk in our family tree. Cunning folk, in case you’ve been blessed with ignorance, is another name for wise men and women who heal and help others through both natural and magical means.

That might not seem so bad, but at seventeen, I rebelled with every fiber of my being. I wanted so much to be like everyone else. I tried so hard to pretend that I wasn’t plagued most nights by dreams that were seemingly not my own.

Sometimes the dreams came true; sometimes they merely taunted me. The embarrassment of misinterpreting a dream was something one truly had to experience before you could appreciate it. The looks on people’s faces when they had deemed you unbalanced was something you never got used to. The straw that finally broke the proverbial camel’s back came at a party in my junior year of high school. For weeks, I had dreamed of a fire at that party. It was the only reason—other than my then-crush, of course—that I had gone. As it turned out, I’d read the signs wrong, and the dream was more my anxiety than anything else. Needless to say, Betsy Stevens didn’t appreciate me ruining her party by screaming about a fire that never came to be.

A couple weeks after the incident, I left and went to live with my dad, who was on the East Coast—far away from talks of cunning folk and prophetic dreams. The move had worked in many ways. My dreams even stopped for a time, but as with all good things, it did not last.

Victor has tried to run from his visions, especially when he saw the death of a little girl. But he keeps seeing a sign outside the town of Carver’s Corner and finds himself drawn there. Victor learns of the disappearance of a woman and a local man that are thought to have run off together. He also starts having strange hints about a man called Thorn.

This is a great mystery with a paranormal twist and oh so much more. I liked Victor and felt for him having such a tough gift/curse. Thorn was a great addition to the story. Between the two of them I couldn’t put the book down if I tried.

This is the first book I have read of Kristy Carter but it definitely won’t be my last. This is a great read and one I recommend checking out. This is one that I will be adding to my shelves. I can’t wait to read her other books.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.
