Silent Sea Chronicles

The Lost Sentinel (Book 1)

The magical island of Kalaya is dying, along with its Sentinel.

The Assembly controls Kalaya. Originally set up to govern, they now persecute those with magic and exile them to the Turrak Mountains.

Tei, a tailor’s daughter, has always hidden her magic but when her father’s old friend visits and warns them to flee to the mountains she must leave her old life behind.
On the journey, an attack leaves her father mortally wounded. He entrusts her into the care of the exiles and on his deathbed makes a shocking confession.
Struggling with self doubt, Tei joins the exiles search for the new Sentinel who is the only person capable of restoring the fading magic. But mysterious Masked Riders are hunting the Sentinel too, and time, as well as hope, is running out.

Against mounting odds it will take friendship, heartache and sacrifice for the exiles to succeed in their quest, but is Tei willing to risk everything to save the island magic?

My Review

4 Stars

We start this story on the island of Kalaya, which is an island that is slowly dying. There a group of people called the Assembly has the rule of the land and enforces that any magic user needs to be killed since they are the ones killing the land. We meet Tei, a tailor’s daughter that has magic and has been using it since she was young.

One day her magic is discovered and her and her father must go on the run to the mountains where the exiles live, other magic users. But the trip is perilous and they are attacked. She is told by her father that the Sentinel, who can restore the land and magic, needs to be found.

At the same times we also follow a young man that takes his father’s place on the Assembly. He has a secret, a young woman on his farm uses magic and he wants to keep her safe no matter what the cost. We also follow a young man from the island of Stone Haven, a brutal place where people rely on raiding to survive. A young commander finds himself draw into war with Kalaya and the magic users.

There is a lot going on in this book besides just the world building. I loved this world and how it was written without a huge info dump. I loved the concept of twisting people’s beliefs of magic users into fear to control. I felt for Tei and her father and was saddened by her loss. But Tei has a lot to accomplish to find the new Sentinel.

Although it was nice to see the world from other’s eyes I think this drew away from Tei’s story. I wanted to see more of her growth in this world. But it does show that there is so much more happening than just the exiles and the rest of the population.

I think this is a great start to a new series. I am very curious to see what happens in the next book and recommend anyone that likes fantasy stories to check this book out.

The Sentinel’s Reign (Book 2)

The Sentinel’s reign is doomed to failure unless Tei can prevent the Kalayan people from plunging into war.

With the new Sentinel initiated and the magic restored on Kalaya, life is flourishing for Tei and the exiles. But Rathnor’s plans for war soon escalate and thwart any chance of peace.

Brogan’s position on the Assembly is uncertain as rumours circulate that he is an exile spy.

After an attempt on his life, Farrell is more determined than ever to build a home for his people on Stone Haven. But the council have their sights set on Kalaya and Farrell struggles to steer them from war.

As trouble brews within and outside forces gather against them, can the exiles keep their hold on the magic, or will this spell the end of Kalaya and its people?

My Review

4 Stars

Although the Sentinel has been found and magic restored to Kalaya, things are not as great as they first appear. Prejudice and mistrust run deep and not everyone is accepting of those that use magic. There are those that are still planning on a war and won’t be swayed from their goals. Then you have the young man that is still trying to keep his own home going but will he be able to keep war from happening?

Let me start by saying that I recommend reading these books in order. You hop right into the story and will miss some stuff without reading book one. I loved coming back to this world. Things seem to be going better but not perfect. There are still those that hate the exiles and want to end them. You have relationships breaking and rebuilding stronger. And you have those dealing with loss and what to do with their futures.

I really like how those raveled frayed endings from the first book are wrapped together and some of my questions answered. We find an end to one conflict but so many more waiting to strike in the shadows. But I really liked finding out where Rathnor’s hatred for the exiles comes from.

This is a great series and one that any fantasy lover will enjoy. Now I can’t wait to read the last book, Sentinel’s Alliance to see how this finally ends.

I received a complimentary copy of both of these book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review for both books.

Patricia is shaken when her husband, Jacques is found dead in his hotel room in Paris. Sheis trying to work through his death but something doesn’t feel right to her and she starts asking questions. She eventually learns of Jacques mistress and other secrets. But she is not completely honest either and will have to face demons from her own past.

From the blurb I had an idea where this book was going with the mistress. I didn’t expect where the book really went. I was thinking this might be a murder mystery or such but it really isn’t. It’s more of a look at real life events and how things can affect us for years after the event. Secrets always have a way of coming out.

This is one of those books that makes you think about the little things we do every day. The little secrets we keep, the little things that we over look, and how our relationships are rather complicated. It’s a good read and one I recommend checking out.

Salvation Day by Kali Wallace

A lethal virus is awoken on an abandoned spaceship in this incredibly fast-paced, claustrophobic thriller.

They thought the ship would be their salvation.

Zahra knew every detail of the plan. House of Wisdom, a massive exploration vessel, had been abandoned by the government of Earth a decade earlier, when a deadly virus broke out and killed everyone on board in a matter of hours. But now it could belong to her people if they were bold enough to take it. All they needed to do was kidnap Jaswinder Bhattacharya—the sole survivor of the tragedy, and the last person whose genetic signature would allow entry to the spaceship.

But what Zahra and her crew could not know was what waited for them on the ship—a terrifying secret buried by the government. A threat to all of humanity that lay sleeping alongside the orbiting dead.

And then they woke it up.

Praise for Salvation Day

“A smart, gripping thriller you just can’t put down. Explosions, betrayals, morally gray choices and twisty secrets; all set in the world that comes after the end of ours. Perfect for fans of Aliens and locked spaceship murder mysteries.” – Kameron Hurley, Hugo Award-winning author of The Light Brigade

“Kali Wallace, the world needs you–and this book. Salvation Day is a taut thriller, a near-future look at where we’re headed next, a mirror reflecting the best and worst of humanity. It is all that, and so much more. I’d follow the rebellious heroine Zahra anywhere–especially into another nail-biter of a story like this.”–James Rollins, New York Times bestselling author of The Demon Crown

Salvation Day is a masterful story set at a screaming pace. It had me holding on for dear life all the way through. I loved it.”—Mur Lafferty, Hugo Award-winning author of Six Wakes

“Wallace delivers an exciting sf thriller that shines a light on government secrets, shifting blame, and elitism and class in a future society. The tight plot and well-developed characters create an engrossing read” —Library Journal

After reading about Chris and how the loss of his wife affected his family I was very excited to see how things were going with Helen. But then he sees Blair, his wife that has been dead for three years. Of course he gives chase just to save her and have her disappear. Then her body does show up and Chris, with the help of the Geezer Squad look into what really happened to Blair.

I have loved this series from the first book and was curious at where it was going to go just from the blurb. But when I started listening to the book and learned that Blair decided to play dead for her job I got so mad with her that I had to walk away. I mean how could she do that to Chris and the girls?!?! Yes, this is the sign of an amazing author to me.

Once I calmed down I proceeded with the book and was quickly sucked into a fantastic story of terrorists, love, betrayal, and loss. Yes, I do admit that I felt for Blair and understood her decision, reluctantly. What an emotional roller coaster for Chris and his family!! Thankfully they are full of strong people that have each others backs.

This book has everything from action and adventure to romance and comic relief. The Geezer Squad is as feisty as ever and of course Sterling has to show up his human counter parts. Mike Alger does a marvelous job breathing life into these characters. This would be a wonderful read but listening to the audiobook adds so much more to the tale.

I love Lauren Carr’s books and recommend everyone check them out. Although they are part of a series they are written so you can read each book as a standalone.

Mac Faraday has invited all of his old police buddies to come to the Spencer Manor for the wedding of the daughter of a late colleague. But there is more to this story than just Mac opening his wallet for the wedding. The brides own mother was murdered on the day of her wedding too. It is a sixteen year old cold case that Mac wants to close and what better way to bring all the suspects back together.

This story has a lot happening as Mac tries to uncover who really killed the original bride. Then the suspects start being murdered too. He has to be quick or he is going to be the next one dead as secrets are coming to light. The suspects seem to keep going around in the same circle of who could have done it punctuated by the death of suspects.

Of course the wedding is not the only excitement. David learns that an old flame is back in town. She wants to get back together with him but she has one heck of a surprise to throw at David. I loved this twist. It’s not what David expected but he took to it well.

I loved Mayor Gnarly in this story, although I need to catch up on the book in which he got elected. I missed that one. I love the whole drama with his book. I couldn’t help but laugh each time it was brought up.

Now I do have to say that I didn’t get into this story as much as others. There was so much happening that I got a little confused with the story. It didn’t help that a couple people had names that sounded the same which confused me. I’m sure reading the book would have cleared this up but I was listening to the audiobook.

I really enjoyed this book and still recommend checking out the Mac Faraday series on audiobook. Mike Alger does an amazing job narrating this series.

What Nobody Knew

What Nobody Knew by Amelia Hendrey

My story begins aged 3, when my mother abandoned me and left me with my brutal father to raise me. Nobody knew the secrets that went on inside that house, or the journey that I travelled on after leaving it, until now. This is the story of my survival.

What do you do when no one wants you?

How many people need to destroy a child until that child wants to destroy herself?

What if social services always got told a different story?

What would you do if you were in my position?

Survival is key.

My Review

5 stars

This is Amelia Hendrey’s story. It will angry you and move you at the same time. This is a hard story to read with everything that she has gone through but it is one that I recommend people reading.

When Amelia is three years old, her biological mother abandons her at her father’s house. What follows is the childhood of nightmares for her. Amelia’s father is a bad alcoholic and very abusive to bother her step mother and herself. Her stepmother had her own issues and tended to take out her frustrations with Amelia.

From there things just go from bad to worse as it seems that everyone suspects what’s going on but they don’t do anything to help the situation. Mixed in with the narration are the actual reports that were written about Amelia. This just bring home the truth of the matter and how she was failed from so many areas.

But as horrible of a life as Amelia started out with, she has grown into an amazing woman. She has risen above the abuse and has created a family. She is also sharing her story which I can only imagine is heartbreaking for herself but also healing.

This is a touching story but one that needs to be read. Horrible things happen daily and unfortunately there are many children that slip through the cracks. But instead of blaming others let’s see what happened and prevent future children from growing up like Amelia.

Space Dragons

Space Dragons by Robin Bennett

If Stan Pollux had known he would be spending his summer holidays in the outer reaches of our solar system, he would have put on different underpants.

But when he gets kidnapped by the Planet Dragon Mercury, most things suddenly seem small and insignificant. Stan finds himself in a universe of dragons who had once ruled the skies as gods: Mars, Venus, Saturn and even Uranus way out back. This is shaping up to be the best summer holiday in the history of the cosmos until Stan discovers his stupid sister is missing and that Pluto (AKA Hades) is trying to use her to destroy the Solar System. And it will be all Stan’s fault if he doesn’t get Poppy back.

So, all Stan has to do is learn how to fight like a hero in space armour, defeat the dragon god of the Underworld, Hades, rescue his sister and save the world. All before his parents realise she is missing.

Stan Pollux has got a lot on his plate and when his little sister, Poppy breaks his telescope he about snaps. But when he looks through his telescope he sees something impossible. The next day he wants to verify what he sees and ends up being kidnapped. Poppy sees her brother disappear and wants to help him and ends up being kidnapped too, but not by the same dragons. The Space Dragons need Stan’s help to save the universe and he is going to need their help to save his sister.

Stan has his hands full with a bully from school, a father that is gone a lot working, and his annoying little sister. But once he gets kidnapped he learns that he has had contact with the Particle of Light. I loved how the dragons were based from Greek and Roman mythology but also relate to the planets. I also have to admit that for being five years old Poppy is very spunky and I loved how she kept Hades on his toes.

This is a wonderful mid grade read that I think will delight any child to adult. It has many topics that can help children that miss their parents, deal with bullies, and cope with younger siblings. I loved all the mythology and astronomy that is in the book. It’s a great introduction to all of these sciences. It’s definitely one to add to your shelves.

What started out as the worst day of Mac Faraday’s life would end up being a new beginning. After a messy divorce hearing, the last person that Mac wanted to see was another lawyer. Yet, this lawyer wore the expression of a child bursting to tell his secret. This confidence would reveal Mac as heir to undreamed of fortunes, and lead him to the birthplace of America’s Queen of Mystery and an investigation that will unfold like one of her famous mystery novels.

Soon after she moves to Deep Creek Lake, Maryland, Katrina Singleton learns that life in an exclusive community is not all good. For some unknown reason, a strange man calling himself “Pay Back” begins stalking her. When Katrina is found strangled all evidence points to her terrorist, who is nowhere to be found.

Three months later, the file on her murder is still open when Mac Faraday, sole heir to his unknown birth mother’s home and fortune, moves into the estate next door. Little does he know as he drives up to Spencer Manor that he is driving into a closed gate community that is hiding more suspicious deaths than his DC workload as a homicide detective. Mac Faraday has just hit rock bottom as he comes out of his divorce hearing. But things are looking up. It seems that he is the son of America’s Queen of Mystery, Robin Spencer and he has inherited her fortune. Mac retires to his new home in Spencer, Maryland but finds this his new neighborhood has a murder in it and he just has to stick his nose into the case to help out.

Katrina Singleton is rich and single. She made her living in movies and has now found that staying young looking is harder than she thought. Then someone calling themselves Pay Back starts stalking her. Could it be her ex that took off? What about the local author that seems to think he is the cat’s meow?

I have loved the Mac Faraday series since I started reading a while ago. When I had an opportunity to see how everything started I just had to jump at the offer. Mac may have just gotten the break of a lifetime with his inheritance, even if you consider Gnarly part of that inheritance, but he is still a cop at heart and can’t let the murder of Karina Singleton go unsolved.

I love the introduction to everyone and connecting the current to the beginning. Of course you have an amazing mystery that will keep you guessing right up to the end. This is a great series that you can skip around in but what better way to enjoy it than to read it in order. I also have to say that Mike Alger is the voice of Mac Faraday. He is an amazing narrator!

But as her seemingly charmed life begins to unravel, and Emma experiences love and tragedy, she ultimately finds solace in her once-derided grandfather’s Theorem on the universe.

The Space Between Time is humorous and poignant and offers the metaphor that we are all connected, even to those we have loved and not quite lost.

Timescale for a Closed Universe

It wasn’t an afternoon that I like to remember, and not just because of my shrieking tantrum. Once I’d calmed down, Mum told me I’d been very silly, because it was all make-believe on a cinema screen. I reminded her that she’d cried when Bambi’s mum died, and that was a film and a cartoon. Mum said that it wasn’t the same thing at all. But I wasn’t being silly because I wasn’t old enough to know the difference between pretence and reality.

Dad had looked pretty dead on the screen. The blood on his chest had looked pretty real. If it had been a different dead person, I would have been OK. Children don’t really know where make-believe ends and the real world begins and, partly because of who I am, it’s remained pretty hazy ever since. I also don’t like to remember that film because it was the moment when I realised that our lives were about to change, and I didn’t know if that would be a good thing.

Sounds strange, yes? Here’s something stranger: I am a child of the sea, I sometimes think, and have done ever since we first moved to live beside it. I feel subject to its vagaries and tempers, with its foaming margins framed against a towering sky. I am familiar with its unchanging mood swings. That’s how I like things; I find the familiar comforting. I find change threatening.

I am the daughter of someone who, not long after that ghastly cinema outing, became one of the most famous actors of his generation and, importantly for me, the granddaughter of a rather brilliant but obscure physics professor. But despite their overachievements, I have inherited no aptitude for mathematics and my father positively hated the idea of his only offspring following in his thespian footsteps. He knew how cruel and badly paid the profession could be. But I still look up to my grandfather, and think of his ludicrous moustache with affection.

Gramps once told me that there are more stars in the universe than grains of sand on Earth. Just think of all those sandpits, beaches and deserts! That’s an awful lot of stars. He then told me, his only grandchild, that I was his shining star, which was a nice thing to say and why I remember him talking about sand and stars. On clear nights, with stars twinkling, I often think about him.

I still believe in my grandfather, and admire his stoic acceptance in the face of professional disdain, because I believe in the unique power of ideas, right or wrong, and that it’s our thoughts that shape our existence. We are who we believe ourselves to be.

I gave up believing in my father long ago, because speaking other people’s words and ideas seemed like a lame excuse for a job, even if he was paid millions, and met the Queen on several occasions. She must have liked him because she awarded him an OBE for services to film, theatre and charity. Charity! Who the hell told the Queen that?

I stopped believing in him one Christmas Day, a long time ago, when he simply didn’t turn up. It wasn’t his presents that I missed, or even his presence, but the warm, fuzzy feeling of being important to him. During that day of absence and loss I concluded that his wife and daughter couldn’t much matter to him, otherwise he’d have made a bigger effort to get home. That Christmas Day, my father was simply somewhere else, probably in a bar, immaculately dressed, his hair slicked back, the object of male envy and the centre of every woman’s attention for miles around.

In that respect, Dad was more tomcat than father, except that by then his territory, his fame, stretched around the globe. I know this: by then he had a Golden Globe to prove it. He gushed pheromones from every pore, squirting attraction in every direction, and even women with a poor sense of smell could sniff him out.

I feel mostly Scottish, but am a little bit Italian. It explains my name, Emma Maria Rossini; my dark complexion, black hair, the slightly long nose, and thin and lanky body. Obese I am not, and will never be, however much pasta I eat, and I eat lots. It also explains my temper, according to some people, although I don’t agree with them, and my brown cow’s eyes, as an almost-boyfriend once described them, thinking he was paying me a compliment, before realising that he had just become an ex-almost-boyfriend.

But mostly I am a child of the sea. That’s what happens if you live for long enough by its margins: it becomes a part of you; its mood echoing your mood, until you know what it’s thinking, and it knows everything about you. That’s what it feels like when I contemplate its tensile strength and infinite capacity for change. On calm flat days in North Berwick, with small dinghies marooned on the glassy water, and loud children squealing in its shallows, it can make me anxious and cranky.

The sea, on those days, seems soulless and tired, bereft of spirit. But on wilder days, the beach deserted, or with only a hardy dog-walker venturing across the sand, with large waves thundering in, broaching and breaking, then greedily sucking back pebbles into the foam, I feel energised: this is what the sea enjoys, a roaring irresponsibility, and I share in its pleasure. We are all children of the sea, I sometimes think, or we should be – even those who have never seen an ocean or tasted its saltiness; I can stand for hours and contemplate its far horizons, lost within myself, sharing its passion. In the Firth of Forth is the ebb and flow of my past and my existence, wrapped tight against the west wind. It is what I am, placid and calm, or loud and brash.

About the Author

I was born in Paisley, central Scotland, which wasn’t my fault. That week, Eddie Calvert with Norrie Paramor and his Orchestra were Top of the Pops, with Oh, Mein Papa, as sung by a young German woman remembering her once-famous clown father. That gives a clue to my age, not my musical taste.

I was brought up in the west of Scotland and graduated from the University of Edinburgh. I still have the scroll, but it’s in Latin, so it could say anything.

I then worked briefly as a street actor, baby photographer, puppeteer and restaurant dogsbody before becoming a journalist. I started in Glasgow and ended up in London, covering news, features and politics. I interviewed motorbike ace Barry Sheene, Noel Edmonds threatened me with legal action and, because of a bureaucratic muddle, I was ordered out of Greece.

I then took a year to travel round the world, visiting 19 countries. Highlights included being threatened by a man with a gun in Dubai, being given an armed bodyguard by the PLO in Beirut (not the same person with a gun), and visiting Robert Louis Stevenson’s grave in Samoa. What I did for the rest of the year I can’t quite remember

Surprisingly, I was approached by a government agency to work in intelligence, which just shows how shoddy government recruitment was back then. However, it turned out to be very boring and I don’t like vodka martini.

Craving excitement and adventure, I ended up as a PR consultant, which is the fate of all journalists who haven’t won a Pulitzer Prize, and I’ve still to listen to Oh, Mein Papa.

I am married with two grown-up children and live in central Scotland. And that’s about it.

Swann’s Down

Swann's Down by Charles Salzberg Banner

Swann’s Down

by Charles Salzberg

on Tour May 1 – June 30, 2019

Synopsis:

Swann's Down by Charles Salzberg

When Henry Swann is asked by his quirky partner, Goldblatt, to find a missing psychic who’s swindled his ex-wife out of a small fortune, he just can’t say no. Although he doesn’t actually expect to get paid, he figures it might give him a chance to finally learn more about his partner’s mysterious past. His search takes him into the controversial, arcane world of psychics, fortune tellers, and charlatans, while raising questions in his own mind about whether or not there is an after-life.

While working his partner’s case, he’s approached by a former employer, attorney Paul Rudder, to track down a missing witness who might be able to provide an alibi for his client, Nicky Diamond, a notorious mob hitman who’s scheduled to go on trial for murder he claims he didn’t commit in a week. Swann’s search for the missing witness, who happens to be the defendant’s girlfriend, takes him from Brooklyn to a small beach town across the Bay from Mobile, Ala. But what does she really know and will she even come back with him to testify for her boyfriend?

Praise for Swann’s Down:

“Psychics, double-crosses, missing persons–Charles Salzberg’s latest Henry Swann book has it all. Swann’s Down is a gritty, no-frills PI novel that brings to mind greats like Reed Farrel Coleman’s Moe Prager and Michael Harvey’s Michael Kelly. Whether this is your first Swann adventure or the latest, you won’t want to miss the brass-knuckle punch that is Swann’s Down. Trust me.” ~ Alex Segura, author of Blackout and Dangerous Ends

“From Manhattan to Coney Island to the steamy shores of Alabama, Charles Salzberg delivers a top-flight mystery with his latest Henry Swann outing. Highly recommended.” ~ Tom Straw, New York Times bestselling author as Richard Castle

Swann’s Down gives readers two intriguing mysteries for the price of one, as skip tracer Henry Swann pursues a woman who might alibi a murderer and a psychic who swindled the ex-wife of Swann’s partner. Shamus Award-nominated Salzberg does a superb job cutting between the two investigations. I kept turning pages to stay with both chases as the suspense increased to the very end. Whatever is going on, Swann is at the center of this story. His wry wit, quotes from authors and philosophers, genius for questioning suspects, and dark past make him a character readers will follow anywhere as he seeks his quarry. This is another thrilling addition to this excellent series. ~ Rich Zahradnik, Lights Out Summer, winner of the 2018 Shamus Award for Best Paperback Private Eye Novel

Henry Swann dives in where others fear to tread in Swann’s Down: Fast. Funny. And Smart. This time out, Swann crosses paths with a psycho hitman, a phony psychic and Swann’s mysterious partner, a disbarred lawyer. Who could ask for more? I hope we’ll see a lot more of Swann in the future and that this isn’t Swann’s swan song. ~ Paul D. Marks, Shamus Award-winning Author of White Heat and Broken Windows.

Read an excerpt:

1 The Age of Aquarius

“We’re partners, right?” Nothing good can come from that question when it comes from the mouth of Goldblatt. “I mean, all for one and one for all, am I right?” he quickly added in an attempt, I was sure, to seal the deal. “I think you’re confusing us with the three musketeers. May I point out there are only two of us, and I’m afraid that’s not the only fallacy in your declaration. But you might as well finish what you’ve started.” We were having our weekly Friday lunchtime sit-down to discuss what Goldblatt likes to refer to as “business.” I have another name for it: waste of time. Our venue changes from week to week but the concept is always pretty much the same: a cheap diner-slash-coffee shop somewhere on the island of Manhattan. Today’s eatery of choice (Goldblatt’s choice, my destiny) is the Utopia Diner, on Amsterdam, near 72nd Street. And as for the business we’d just finished discussing, well, to be honest, there never is very much actual business to discuss and today was no exception. At this particular moment in time, we were going through a bit of a dry spell, which always makes me a little nervous because no matter how much I banish it from my mind, the rent is due the first of every month and at least three times a day I seem to develop a hunger that must be quenched. Still, a good fifteen, twenty years away from Social Security, and with precious little dough in the bank–okay, let’s be honest, no dough in the bank–and no 401-K to fall back on, I need to keep working. And, as much as I don’t like to admit it, lately it’s been my “partner,” as he likes to refer to himself, as opposed to my preferred albatross, who’s brought in the bulk of our clients. We’d already finished eating–though technically, Goldblatt never actually finishes eating which means a meal can easily turn into an all-day affair, if I don’t apply the brakes–and we were just waiting for the check to arrive. This is a crucial point of any meal with Goldblatt because it is the opening gambit in what has become our weekly routine of watching the check sit there in no-man’s land somewhere between us until I inevitably give in, pick it up, and pay. Otherwise, I risk one of two things: either we’d be there all afternoon or, worst case scenario, Goldblatt will decide he’s still hungry and threaten to order something else. Neither one of these options is the least bit appealing. “I’ll get right to the point,” he said. Just then, out of the corner of my eye I spotted the waiter, like a white knight, approaching with our check in hand. If I acted quick enough I might be able to get out of there before I can be sucked into something I don’t want to have anything to do with. “That would be nice,” I said, reaching for my wallet. “What is your point?” “I need to hire you.” I was stopped in my tracks before I got my wallet halfway out of my back pocket. “Really? To do what?” “I want you to find someone for me. Well, to be more precise it’s not really for me. It’s for my ex-wife.” Wait a minute! Goldblatt married? Goldblatt with a wife? Goldblatt a husband? This was a new one on me, something I’d never even considered. “You…you’ve been married?” I stammered. Truth is, I never pictured Goldblatt being in any relationship other than with, yes, as irritating as it might be, me. I mean the guy isn’t exactly anyone’s idea of Don Juan, although I suppose in theory there are women who might find him if not attractive in the conventional way at least interesting in a specimen-under-glass way. Or maybe as a project. Women love a project. They love a challenge. They love the idea that they have the opportunity to remake a man in their image. Maybe that was it. But whatever it was, my world was shaken to the core. And what would shake it even more would be to find that he was actually a father, too. But one shock per meal is more than enough, so there was no chance I was going to pursue that line of questioning. “Unfortunately, the answer is yes. More than once, in fact.” “Holy Cow,” I blurted out, channeling the Scooter. “You’re kidding me?” At this point the same bald, squat waiter who seems to serve us in every diner we patronize, reached our table and dropped the check right in front of me. “This is not something a man usually kids about.” “How many times?” He held up three fingers. “Three times! You’ve been married three times?” “Yeah.” I gulped. “Are you married now?” He shook his head. “Nah. I’m kinda between wives. Giving it a rest, if you know what I mean. But chances are I’ll be back in the saddle again soon enough.” “Okay, so let me get this straight. You’ve been married three times and now you’re single but you would consider getting married again?” “Man is not meant to be alone, Swannie. You might consider the possibility that your life would be enriched if you found your soulmate.” You’re fortunate if you find one soul mate in life and I’d already had mine. She was yanked from my life as a result of a freak accident, a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I didn’t know if Goldblatt knew the circumstances of her bizarre accidental death, but I wouldn’t have been surprised because he seems to know a lot of things he has no business knowing. “Some men are meant to be alone, Goldblatt. I’m one of them and after three failed marriages maybe you should consider the possibility you are, too.” He smiled and puffed out his chest. “What can I say, Swann? I’m a friggin’ babe magnet.” I would have laughed, should have laughed, but I was still processing the scary fact that he’d been married three times. That meant there were three women in the world who not only were willing to marry him but did marry him. I wanted to know more. Much more. Everything, in fact. But this was not the time and certainly not the place to delve into Goldblatt’s mysterious, sordid past. Nevertheless, I promised myself I would revisit this topic in the not too distant future. Still in shock, I avoided our weekly “who’s paying for this meal” tango, grabbed the check and reached for my wallet…again. “So, wanna know the story?” he asked. “Which story would that be?” “The story of why I want to hire you?” “Desperately.” *** Excerpt from Swann’s Down by Charles Salzberg. My Review

4 stars

Henry Swann has been asked by his partner Goldblatt to look into a psychic that swindled his ex-wife out of her inheritance. Although not expecting much except information on Goldblatt Henry heads out to an abandoned hotel on Coney Island for information about this fake and finds himself into the world of the occult.

At the same time, attorney Paul Rudder asks Henry to hunt down a witness for a mob hitman. It seems the hitman is claiming that he didn’t kill the person and his girlfriend would prove him right, if they can find the girl. So off to Fairhope, Alabama as Henry begins his hunt for the missing witness.

I didn’t realize that this was the fifth book in the series. I easily figured out most of what is going on but I’m still curious about Henry and Goldblatt’s relationship. I noticed that this story doesn’t have they typical intense action scenes that a lot of stories do but that is not a bad thing. It has an amazing story that keeps you reading to see what trouble Henry is going to get himself into next.

I do love the snarky outlook and witty comebacks that you read along this journey, I really made the story feel real to me. I love when the main characters can laugh at themselves and the situations they find themselves in. I think this is a great read and I do want to catch up on the first four books of this series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.
