The Lost Sentinel (Book 1)

The magical island of Kalaya is dying, along with its Sentinel.

The Assembly controls Kalaya. Originally set up to govern, they now persecute those with magic and exile them to the Turrak Mountains.

Tei, a tailor’s daughter, has always hidden her magic but when her father’s old friend visits and warns them to flee to the mountains she must leave her old life behind.
On the journey, an attack leaves her father mortally wounded. He entrusts her into the care of the exiles and on his deathbed makes a shocking confession.
Struggling with self doubt, Tei joins the exiles search for the new Sentinel who is the only person capable of restoring the fading magic. But mysterious Masked Riders are hunting the Sentinel too, and time, as well as hope, is running out.

Against mounting odds it will take friendship, heartache and sacrifice for the exiles to succeed in their quest, but is Tei willing to risk everything to save the island magic?

4 Stars

We start this story on the island of Kalaya, which is an island that is slowly dying. There a group of people called the Assembly has the rule of the land and enforces that any magic user needs to be killed since they are the ones killing the land. We meet Tei, a tailor’s daughter that has magic and has been using it since she was young.

One day her magic is discovered and her and her father must go on the run to the mountains where the exiles live, other magic users. But the trip is perilous and they are attacked. She is told by her father that the Sentinel, who can restore the land and magic, needs to be found.

At the same times we also follow a young man that takes his father’s place on the Assembly. He has a secret, a young woman on his farm uses magic and he wants to keep her safe no matter what the cost. We also follow a young man from the island of Stone Haven, a brutal place where people rely on raiding to survive. A young commander finds himself draw into war with Kalaya and the magic users.

There is a lot going on in this book besides just the world building. I loved this world and how it was written without a huge info dump. I loved the concept of twisting people’s beliefs of magic users into fear to control. I felt for Tei and her father and was saddened by her loss. But Tei has a lot to accomplish to find the new Sentinel.

Although it was nice to see the world from other’s eyes I think this drew away from Tei’s story. I wanted to see more of her growth in this world. But it does show that there is so much more happening than just the exiles and the rest of the population.

I think this is a great start to a new series. I am very curious to see what happens in the next book and recommend anyone that likes fantasy stories to check this book out.

The Sentinel’s Reign (Book 2)

The Sentinel’s reign is doomed to failure unless Tei can prevent the Kalayan people from plunging into war.

With the new Sentinel initiated and the magic restored on Kalaya, life is flourishing for Tei and the exiles. But Rathnor’s plans for war soon escalate and thwart any chance of peace.

Brogan’s position on the Assembly is uncertain as rumours circulate that he is an exile spy.

After an attempt on his life, Farrell is more determined than ever to build a home for his people on Stone Haven. But the council have their sights set on Kalaya and Farrell struggles to steer them from war.

As trouble brews within and outside forces gather against them, can the exiles keep their hold on the magic, or will this spell the end of Kalaya and its people?

My Review

4 Stars

Although the Sentinel has been found and magic restored to Kalaya, things are not as great as they first appear. Prejudice and mistrust run deep and not everyone is accepting of those that use magic. There are those that are still planning on a war and won’t be swayed from their goals. Then you have the young man that is still trying to keep his own home going but will he be able to keep war from happening?

Let me start by saying that I recommend reading these books in order. You hop right into the story and will miss some stuff without reading book one. I loved coming back to this world. Things seem to be going better but not perfect. There are still those that hate the exiles and want to end them. You have relationships breaking and rebuilding stronger. And you have those dealing with loss and what to do with their futures.

I really like how those raveled frayed endings from the first book are wrapped together and some of my questions answered. We find an end to one conflict but so many more waiting to strike in the shadows. But I really liked finding out where Rathnor’s hatred for the exiles comes from.

This is a great series and one that any fantasy lover will enjoy. Now I can’t wait to read the last book, Sentinel’s Alliance to see how this finally ends.

I received a complimentary copy of both of these book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review for both books.

Patricia is shaken when her husband, Jacques is found dead in his hotel room in Paris. Sheis trying to work through his death but something doesn’t feel right to her and she starts asking questions. She eventually learns of Jacques mistress and other secrets. But she is not completely honest either and will have to face demons from her own past.

From the blurb I had an idea where this book was going with the mistress. I didn’t expect where the book really went. I was thinking this might be a murder mystery or such but it really isn’t. It’s more of a look at real life events and how things can affect us for years after the event. Secrets always have a way of coming out.

This is one of those books that makes you think about the little things we do every day. The little secrets we keep, the little things that we over look, and how our relationships are rather complicated. It’s a good read and one I recommend checking out.

Salvation Day by Kali Wallace

A lethal virus is awoken on an abandoned spaceship in this incredibly fast-paced, claustrophobic thriller.

They thought the ship would be their salvation.

Zahra knew every detail of the plan. House of Wisdom, a massive exploration vessel, had been abandoned by the government of Earth a decade earlier, when a deadly virus broke out and killed everyone on board in a matter of hours. But now it could belong to her people if they were bold enough to take it. All they needed to do was kidnap Jaswinder Bhattacharya—the sole survivor of the tragedy, and the last person whose genetic signature would allow entry to the spaceship.

But what Zahra and her crew could not know was what waited for them on the ship—a terrifying secret buried by the government. A threat to all of humanity that lay sleeping alongside the orbiting dead.

And then they woke it up.

Praise for Salvation Day

“A smart, gripping thriller you just can’t put down. Explosions, betrayals, morally gray choices and twisty secrets; all set in the world that comes after the end of ours. Perfect for fans of Aliens and locked spaceship murder mysteries.” – Kameron Hurley, Hugo Award-winning author of The Light Brigade

“Kali Wallace, the world needs you–and this book. Salvation Day is a taut thriller, a near-future look at where we’re headed next, a mirror reflecting the best and worst of humanity. It is all that, and so much more. I’d follow the rebellious heroine Zahra anywhere–especially into another nail-biter of a story like this.”–James Rollins, New York Times bestselling author of The Demon Crown

Salvation Day is a masterful story set at a screaming pace. It had me holding on for dear life all the way through. I loved it.”—Mur Lafferty, Hugo Award-winning author of Six Wakes

“Wallace delivers an exciting sf thriller that shines a light on government secrets, shifting blame, and elitism and class in a future society. The tight plot and well-developed characters create an engrossing read” —Library Journal

After reading about Chris and how the loss of his wife affected his family I was very excited to see how things were going with Helen. But then he sees Blair, his wife that has been dead for three years. Of course he gives chase just to save her and have her disappear. Then her body does show up and Chris, with the help of the Geezer Squad look into what really happened to Blair.

I have loved this series from the first book and was curious at where it was going to go just from the blurb. But when I started listening to the book and learned that Blair decided to play dead for her job I got so mad with her that I had to walk away. I mean how could she do that to Chris and the girls?!?! Yes, this is the sign of an amazing author to me.

Once I calmed down I proceeded with the book and was quickly sucked into a fantastic story of terrorists, love, betrayal, and loss. Yes, I do admit that I felt for Blair and understood her decision, reluctantly. What an emotional roller coaster for Chris and his family!! Thankfully they are full of strong people that have each others backs.

This book has everything from action and adventure to romance and comic relief. The Geezer Squad is as feisty as ever and of course Sterling has to show up his human counter parts. Mike Alger does a marvelous job breathing life into these characters. This would be a wonderful read but listening to the audiobook adds so much more to the tale.

I love Lauren Carr’s books and recommend everyone check them out. Although they are part of a series they are written so you can read each book as a standalone.

Mac Faraday has invited all of his old police buddies to come to the Spencer Manor for the wedding of the daughter of a late colleague. But there is more to this story than just Mac opening his wallet for the wedding. The brides own mother was murdered on the day of her wedding too. It is a sixteen year old cold case that Mac wants to close and what better way to bring all the suspects back together.

This story has a lot happening as Mac tries to uncover who really killed the original bride. Then the suspects start being murdered too. He has to be quick or he is going to be the next one dead as secrets are coming to light. The suspects seem to keep going around in the same circle of who could have done it punctuated by the death of suspects.

Of course the wedding is not the only excitement. David learns that an old flame is back in town. She wants to get back together with him but she has one heck of a surprise to throw at David. I loved this twist. It’s not what David expected but he took to it well.

I loved Mayor Gnarly in this story, although I need to catch up on the book in which he got elected. I missed that one. I love the whole drama with his book. I couldn’t help but laugh each time it was brought up.

Now I do have to say that I didn’t get into this story as much as others. There was so much happening that I got a little confused with the story. It didn’t help that a couple people had names that sounded the same which confused me. I’m sure reading the book would have cleared this up but I was listening to the audiobook.

I really enjoyed this book and still recommend checking out the Mac Faraday series on audiobook. Mike Alger does an amazing job narrating this series.

What Nobody Knew

What Nobody Knew by Amelia Hendrey

My story begins aged 3, when my mother abandoned me and left me with my brutal father to raise me. Nobody knew the secrets that went on inside that house, or the journey that I travelled on after leaving it, until now. This is the story of my survival.

What do you do when no one wants you?

How many people need to destroy a child until that child wants to destroy herself?

What if social services always got told a different story?

What would you do if you were in my position?

Survival is key.

My Review

5 stars

This is Amelia Hendrey’s story. It will angry you and move you at the same time. This is a hard story to read with everything that she has gone through but it is one that I recommend people reading.

When Amelia is three years old, her biological mother abandons her at her father’s house. What follows is the childhood of nightmares for her. Amelia’s father is a bad alcoholic and very abusive to bother her step mother and herself. Her stepmother had her own issues and tended to take out her frustrations with Amelia.

From there things just go from bad to worse as it seems that everyone suspects what’s going on but they don’t do anything to help the situation. Mixed in with the narration are the actual reports that were written about Amelia. This just bring home the truth of the matter and how she was failed from so many areas.

But as horrible of a life as Amelia started out with, she has grown into an amazing woman. She has risen above the abuse and has created a family. She is also sharing her story which I can only imagine is heartbreaking for herself but also healing.

This is a touching story but one that needs to be read. Horrible things happen daily and unfortunately there are many children that slip through the cracks. But instead of blaming others let’s see what happened and prevent future children from growing up like Amelia.

Space Dragons

Space Dragons by Robin Bennett

But when he gets kidnapped by the Planet Dragon Mercury, most things suddenly seem small and insignificant. Stan finds himself in a universe of dragons who had once ruled the skies as gods: Mars, Venus, Saturn and even Uranus way out back. This is shaping up to be the best summer holiday in the history of the cosmos until Stan discovers his stupid sister is missing and that Pluto (AKA Hades) is trying to use her to destroy the Solar System. And it will be all Stan’s fault if he doesn’t get Poppy back.

So, all Stan has to do is learn how to fight like a hero in space armour, defeat the dragon god of the Underworld, Hades, rescue his sister and save the world. All before his parents realise she is missing.

Stan Pollux has got a lot on his plate and when his little sister, Poppy breaks his telescope he about snaps. But when he looks through his telescope he sees something impossible. The next day he wants to verify what he sees and ends up being kidnapped. Poppy sees her brother disappear and wants to help him and ends up being kidnapped too, but not by the same dragons. The Space Dragons need Stan’s help to save the universe and he is going to need their help to save his sister.

Stan has his hands full with a bully from school, a father that is gone a lot working, and his annoying little sister. But once he gets kidnapped he learns that he has had contact with the Particle of Light. I loved how the dragons were based from Greek and Roman mythology but also relate to the planets. I also have to admit that for being five years old Poppy is very spunky and I loved how she kept Hades on his toes.

This is a wonderful mid grade read that I think will delight any child to adult. It has many topics that can help children that miss their parents, deal with bullies, and cope with younger siblings. I loved all the mythology and astronomy that is in the book. It’s a great introduction to all of these sciences. It’s definitely one to add to your shelves.
