Benevolent by Erin Jensen

A story about the purpose of life, the healing power of fandom, and the resilience of the human spirit.
Tormented by the in-crowd at school on a daily basis, there were two things that gave fifteen-year-old Abigail Perkins the strength to keep going—her best friend, Danny Cobb; and her favorite television show, Supernatural. But the night Danny’s mother calls to say that his battle with cancer is nearing its end, and the doctors don’t expect him to live through the night, even Supernatural can’t dull the ache in her heart.
Devastated by her impending loss and crushed that Danny’s mother won’t allow her to visit him one last time, Abigail crawls into bed and cries herself to sleep that night; and she wakes to find Supernatural’s most endearing angel standing at the foot of her bed.
Told from Abigail’s perspective as she nears the end of her long life and revisits the moments that defined it, this story was inspired by the deep connection that Supernatural fans feel with the show’s beloved characters, and the show’s miraculous ability to help its fans through troubled times.

My Review
5 stars
This is Abigail Perkins’ story. We start as she is older and looking back on her life. Then we immerse ourselves in fifteen year old Abigail’s life. School sucks and the only things that motivate Abigail is the series Supernatural and her best friend Danny Cobb. But Danny is dying from cancer and Abigail is broken when his mother tells her this and doesn’t allow her to see him one last time. Abigail goes to bed crying about her situation but wakes with Castiel is standing over her bed.
I have seen parts of the first and second season of Supernatural. I loved the show but have never gotten a chance to catch up on the rest of it. I can relate to Abigail in school and I can completely understand her obsession with the show. My heart broke when I learned about Danny and I was so mad that his mother wouldn’t let her see him one last time.
But the part that really got me was when she was with Cass and the wisdom that he would depart to her. I’m not one of those girl that cry easily, I had the headache afterwards, but I was in tears with the different messages he had for her.
This is a touching story of love, loss, friendship, loneliness, and knowing that there is always a plan for you. I have seen a lot about Erin Jensen’s Dream Water series and after reading Benevolent I think I’m going to have to get myself a copy.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.
