Viola Pumpernickel and the Emerald Lady by Jo Baxter

Viola is a people-watcher. She loves to sit on the step of her father’s bakery in Brookwater Lane, creating stories about the weird and wonderful folk who pass by. Her father is secretly impressed by her big imagination but her mother thinks it’s all a bit silly, really.

So, when Viola witnesses a terrifying robbery late one evening, her theory as to who is behind this dreadful crime is met with rolled eyes and disbelief.

Determined to prove that she is not as silly as everyone believes, Viola sets out to bring this villain to justice and show that she is more than just a girl with a wild imagination.

Together with her older brother, Teddy, her best friend, Flo, and the mysterious Emerald Lady, Viola uncovers a plot far more dangerous than anyone could ever have imagined in this exciting Victorian mystery.

Excerpt

Winter

“A look of intrigue flickers across Tyron’s face as he tries to take measure of this wild girl standing in the centre of his cage. To the untrained eye, Winter looks like an odd wild girl from the forest, and you wouldn’t necessarily know how deadly she is from first impressions. She’s slight in stature yet athletic and nimble, and it’s not until you’ve spent significant time with her that you can fully appreciate how skilful she is. Every single movement is deliberate and focussed, like she could switch into warrior-mode at the flick of a switch.

I can’t help but grin internally when I realise that this monster-man has just met his match and he has absolutely no idea.”

My Review

5 stars

The group is on the way to Alhena to try to find a cure for Tommy. But the path to Alhena is full of infected and General Sinter is still out there after Ally and Tommy. And even if they can get to Alhena it doesn’t mean that they could get in or if the person they are looking for could even help them.

There is so much stacked against them but the group still keeps fighting. I loved seeing how everyone has grown since the first book. I loved little Winter, she is so cute and so much more than the little mouse she comes across as. Of course you will have the love triangle but it has matured as well and not as awkward.

I really like where this series is going and can’t wait for the last book. It’s a fresh look at zombies and in Kill or Cure Bloodlust the group is on constant fight or flight mode. There is no room for a breath of fresh air. And even though they are fighting the infected and Sinter, I loved how the family was there for each other.

This is a great series and one that I recommend to those that like a good zombie and dystopian story. It’s one you really need to check out.

Kill or Cure is a YA romance-infused sci-fi novel.
It focuses on human relationships in an undead, apocalyptic world.
A girl who will stop at nothing to protect her brother.

In a dystopian world ravaged by infection, society as we know it has fallen to the mouths of the dead. The remaining fragments of civilisation survive in walled compounds, scattered in the depths of the countryside. When her little brother becomes sick with a suspected flu virus, Alyx Silverthorne will do anything to keep Tommy alive.

With limited medical supplies and only herbal alternatives, his prospects of surviving this mystery illness are bleak. But saving Tommy is just the beginning. The infected are not the only monsters that exist in this new world, and human nature can be more destructive than the dead.

In a race against time, Alyx and her best friend Will stop at nothing to protect him, even from the same people that swore to protect them all.

Kill or Cure is a dynamic, multifaceted story of teenage love and gut wrenching loss in a dystopian world.

My Review

4 Stars

The world has fallen to the infected. People survive by staying in towns and avoiding the infected. But Ally Silverthorne’s brother, Tommy, has come down with the flu. There are no conventional medicines so Ally finds herself and her best friend Will in the forest looking for yarrow flowers to help.

There are some in town that are worried that Tommy will turn into the infected and want to do him harm. It becomes a race for Ally and Will to help cure Tommy before something worse happens to her family.

This was a good take on zombies, but I have to admit that I wished there were more in the story. Things in the compound suck and Ally is a strong minded person. She does manage to keep silent with all the demands that are expected of her but there is a breaking point.

This is a great start to a new series. The only thing that I have a problem with is the whole love triangle. These are not my favorite things in stories and this one felt especially forced to try to add more drama. This is still a great read and I am excited to see what is going to happen in the next book.

I received a complimentary copy of both of these books. I voluntarily chose to read and post honest reviews.
