Shadow’s Among Us (Doctor’s of Darkness – 4) by Ellery Kane

Evil is closer than you think.

Psychologist, Mollie Roark, had it all. A hotshot husband, a beautiful daughter, a successful career, and a fancy house on the Napa hillside. She’d finally made it. Left her troubled past and her crazy father far behind her.

But two years ago, the unspeakable happened. Her daughter’s burned body turned up on the shores of Lake Berryessa just days after her fifteenth birthday. The police seem certain Dakota fell victim to the Shadow Man, the prolific serial killer who had terrorized the Napa Valley for two decades. Mollie’s normal life is now anything but. Childless, divorced, and unemployed, she’s barely staying afloat. She’s got one mission. To find the scumbag who killed her daughter and make him pay.

When a mysterious old man shows up at her door seeking absolution and promising answers, it’s impossible to resist. But the deeper she goes inside his mind, the shakier her sanity becomes. Everyone is a suspect. No one is innocent. Because Mollie knows evil may be as close as her own shadow.

About the Author

Forensic psychologist by day, novelist by night, Ellery Kane has been writing–professionally and creatively–for as long as she can remember. Just like many of her main characters, Ellery loves to ask why, which is the reason she became a psychologist in the first place. Real life really is stranger than fiction, and Ellery’s writing is often inspired by her day job. Evaluating violent criminals and treating trauma victims, she has gained a unique perspective on the past and its indelible influence on the individual. And she’s heard her fair share of real life thrillers. An avid short story writer as a teenager, Ellery recently began writing for enjoyment again, and she hasn’t stopped since.

Ellery’s debut novel, Legacy, has received several awards, including winning the Gold Medal in the Independent Publisher Book Awards, young adult, e-book category, and the Gold Medal in the 2017 Wishing Shelf Independent Book Awards, teenage category. In 2016, Ellery was selected as one of ten semifinalists in the MasterClass James Patterson Co-Author Competition.

My Review

5 Stars

Dr. Mollie Roark lost her teenage daughter to the Shadow Man. This has taken everything away from her as she losses herself and starts to focus on finding the Shadow Man and making him pay. At the same time we follow along with Dakota, Mollie’s daughter as she finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time.

This is another great addition to the Doctor’s of Darkness series. Mollie had one heck of a childhood but rose above it to become a great psychologist. I don’t blame her for taking Dakota’s death so hard, I would be in the same place. Granted she had one hell of a down fall and was not really making the best decisions.

But then things take a great turn and this book goes from bad (in the best possible way) to worse. A mysterious man with possible answers is gone to lead Mollie down the dark rabbit trail and into all kinds of crazy.

This is one creepy story that will get beneath your skin. If you like dark thrillers you are going to love the Doctor’s of Darkness series. You don’t even have to read them in order, jump in wherever you would like. Ellery Kane is definitely another favorite author of mine.
