No monster wants you to read this book. The more you know about monsters, the more you will know how to defeat them.

Little kids have big fears, which they often imagine to be scary creatures, like monsters. But this book helps explain how knowing “Monster Facts” can help kids outwit them.

Want to avoid monsters?

Fact: Monsters love dirt and grime, so when faced with two kids, the monster will choose the dirty one every time.

And if toys and clothes are all over the floor, you may get ambushed by a mess-loving monster.

Smarter Than a Monster will arm young readers with practical advice in this innovative and imaginative parenting tool that teaches common sense and positive and healthy habits.

My Review

5 Stars

People have been afraid of monsters for a long, long time. And they have learned some surprising things about these monsters. We know how where they really hide and what attracts them. This truly is a guide to monsters and how not to get ambushed by them.

This is the cutest book. I love all the illustrations; they really brought the monsters to life. But I really enjoy the message for kids. You can’t attract monsters if you stay in your own bed or brush your teeth and clean your room. But I have to say that I loved the part about Halloween the most.

This book has great message for kids and I think it would be a great addition to any home or location that has kids. I really enjoyed it.

The world was created by twelve energies which turned into the twelve races on Earth. Eleven races live in hiding from the twelfth, humans. This world is maintained by balance and when things are out of balance there is a risk of one race dying and the world ending. When this happens a human and a reader are selected to find the creator to give birth to a baby that will restart humanity.

Enter Jane and Samuel, a couple that knows they are very important but not what they are supposed to do. They are taken and shown what happened the last time war threatened on Atlantis. Jane and Samuel follow along with Shasta and Wade on their quest for the creator.

I will admit that this book was not what I was expecting. The reader knows about as much as Jane and Samuel as they start on their adventure. I was a touch frustrated with this since I’m thrown into the story and completely lost. I couldn’t really relate to the characters and was confused about the whole thing.

This is an interesting world that is very creative and unique from any other story that I have read. If you stick with the book long enough it starts making more sense and I was curious at how the story was going to end. I don’t know if this is the first in a series or a standalone book because the ending and some questions that don’t really get explained.

This is an interesting and very creative story. I don’t think this is a bad book, just one that I couldn’t get into. I loved the goodies that came in a beautiful box which made this book stand out. I think this is one of those books you should try, you never know, you may find your new favorite story.

Strange Blood: 71 Essays on Offbeat and Underrated Vampire Movies by Vanessa Morgan (ebook)

This is an overview of the most offbeat and underrated vampire movies spanning nine decades and 23 countries.

Strange Blood encompasses well-known hits as well as obscurities that differ from your standard fang fare by turning genre conventions on their head. Here, vampires come in the form of cars, pets, aliens, mechanical objects, gorillas, or floating heads. And when they do look like a demonic monster or an aristocratic Count or Countess, they break the mold in terms of imagery, style, or setting. Leading horror writers, filmmakers, actors, distributors, academics, and programmers present their favorite vampire films through in-depth essays, providing background information, analysis, and trivia regarding the various films. Some of these stories are hilarious, some are terrifying, some are touching, and some are just plain weird. Not all of these movies line up with the critical consensus, yet they have one thing in common: they are unlike anything you’ve ever seen in the world of vampires. Just when you thought that the children of the night had become a tired trope, it turns out they have quite a diverse inventory after all.

Peripheral Visions: The Complete Ghost Stories 1988-2015 by Robert Hood (ebook)

Peripheral Visions is a unique reference collection that includes all of Robert Hood’s 44 ghost stories to date, three of them especially written for this volume. Ranging from melancholy reflection on life and death, through disquieting tales of dark humour and vengeance, to chilling visions of ghostly apocalypse. Hood’s stories are sure to draw you into a terrifying world that in the end is revealed to be irrefutably our own. Though many of these stories draw on the traditions of the past, they are far from traditional in approach.

As you turn each page remember this: not everything here is as it seems. There’s always something more, barely glimpsed, out there on the periphery.

Each section has an evocative, disturbing illustration by noted artist, Nick Stathopoulos.

He was painfully handsome, face broad and lips wide, eyes narrow. His weathered leather jacket was fitted to those shoulders with all the care of a lover. His eyes studied Josie until every hair on her body stood on end. She crossed her arms over her chest and lifted her chin, studying him with equal interest as he glanced down at her bakery case and frowned.

“Where are the cupcakes?”

Josie blinked and it took a moment to shake that whisper soft voice out of her head, like shooing away an affectionate stray cat, knowing it could scratch at any moment.

“This is a patisserie. I don’t carry cupcakes.” She could give him the spiel she gave to Mrs. Montgomery when the old busybody asked. Cupcakes could be bought at the grocery store for less than a dollar a piece. Josie’s wares were baked with techniques that took professional training, if not at least regular and studied practice. Mrs. Montgomery still asked every other visit.

“Three dollars for… what is that?” He asked, sneering at the brightly dyed macarons.

“It’s a cookie, but harder to make,” Josie said, cocking her hip. His eyes licked at the movement and the response of her skin was a betrayal, her imagination conjuring warm fingertips stroking up her side and raising goosebumps. She had to stifle her gasp.

“It’s a rip off. I could fit two of those in my mouth for one bite,” he said.

“For six dollars you could.”

Jessie Flores is having the ultimate bad hair day.

Imagine going to bed with mousy brown locks and waking up with a headful of supernova scarlet. It’s a hot new look for me – literally, because it bursts into flames whenever I’m threatened.

My magical makeover is all Gary’s fault. I knew there was something off from the moment he transferred to my school. Go figure. He’s a wizard with a trust fund and an inferiority complex.

Now, thanks to him, I’ve graduated from high school bullies to supernatural terrors and that’s not all. Fate has chosen me to face the legendary vampire destined to destroy the world.

If I want to survive, I’ll have to dig deep and discover whether I’m truly worthy of this new power. Because if not, everything I hold dear will soon burn even hotter than my hair.

Rick Gualtieri loves to write adventure, mayhem, and snarky dialogue. His bestselling Tome of Bill series combines all of this into a world of supernatural danger with hard-hitting action and plenty of sharp-tongued geeky humor.

Rick lives alone in a dark, evil place called New Jersey with only his wife, three kids, and countless pets to both keep him company and constantly plot against him. When he’s not busy monkey-clicking out words, he can typically be found either playing Dungeons & Dragons, losing at video games, or jealously guarding his collection of vintage Transformers from all who would seek to defile them.

Defilers Beware!

E. Carr likes to split her time between the alien (well resident alien) she married, her two adorable offspring and the vast army of characters who constantly argue in her brain. She uses her past life as a video game reviewer to remind herself just how awesome it is to be writing novels now.

Rachel writes because she knows so many people and places that never quite made it into this version of the universe. It’s her duty to let them out. Writing also gives her mind a certain peace and calm rarely felt in this multi-tasking, wired world.

Narrator Bio

Best Selling, Award Winning Audiobook Narrator, Andrea Emmes was born in Hollywood, Florida, grew up in both Tennessee and Rhode Island and started her career in musical theatre. She’s enjoyed an eclectic career as a singer, dancer, Vegas Headliner, Magician’s Assistant, a Recording Artist and a Video Game Designer.

A total book nerd, Andrea, now enjoys narrating all genres of audiobooks, especially YA, LitRPG, Mystery, Romance, and NonFictionat her professional home studio in San Jose, CA.

Her wide range of character voices and dynamic/emotionally invested performances has reviewers and listeners alike commenting on how she effortlessly pulls listeners in and has versatility and charisma.

Fun Facts: Andrea has a Bachelor of Science in Game Art and Design; was a game designer for Disney Interactive; and gets her gamer-geek on playing games of all kinds!

Jessie Flores is your average teenager crushing on the hot football jock. She spends her days after school at the grandfather’s comic book store and teaching kids at the gym ran by her family. In the middle of the school year Gary joins the school and starts a friendship with Jessie. But he is not who she though, a wizard. It seems she may be the Chosen One but who chose her and why?

I loved Jessie from the start. She is full of snark and willing to step up to help out Gary. She is beyond cool with her comic geek knowledge and family full of MMA fighters. She gets this mane of fiery hair and then becomes the focus of a group that thinks she is going to be the one to stop the vampires from taking over.

I admit that I haven’t read the Bill the Vampire series but now I want to dive in. This is a great start to a new series and I loved how the story started out with Jessie being dunking into the paranormal world. But the second half of the book is where it gets really interesting. And I have to say that Andrea Emmes does a phenomenal job narrating the story.

If you liked the Bill the Vampire series you need to check out this book. If you haven’t read the series you can easily start with this book but I have the feeling that it would take place later in that one. This is a killer book and I’m so happy that I got a chance to listen to the audiobook.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Andrea Emmes. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

Brewer Quote Twitter 3.png

“Just remain calm. They may not take anything or find us very interesting.”

“These guys are pussies. Let’s kick ass.”

“Oh no, you don’t. You start a fight with them, and they will simply scuttle the whole boat, leaving us without even a life raft.”

The Somalis shouted for them to stop talking. There were three pirates on board and three more in the skiff. The small size of their open-hulled, rundown old boat surprised Diegert. It wasn’t more than ten feet long, and Diegert wouldn’t have wanted to cross a Minnesota lake in that thing, let alone the Indian Ocean.

One of the pirates went belowdecks and searched for valuables. The other two stayed above and kept their AK-47s in their hands. The pirate belowdecks let out a loud ululation and rejoiced for whatever he had found. The pirate guarding Barney shouted down to him, and when the other pirate shouted back, he couldn’t stop himself and went down below. The single pirate on deck was also distracted by what was going on below. Diegert seized the moment. He elbowed the pirate in the chest, bashed him in the mouth, grabbed the back of his head, and drove his face into a cleat on the mast, splitting his cranium on the rigid piece of metal.

Barney motioned for Diegert to stop, but the younger man stripped the AK off the dying pirate and descended into the cabin. The two pirates belowdecks were so amazed with the case of guns they’d found that, when they turned to see who was coming, Diegert struck the first one with a buttstock to the face. The second received a hand blade strike to the larynx. Both were dazed, and Diegert wrapped the strap of the AK-47 around the first guy’s neck and backhauled him over his shoulder. The force of the maneuver broke the pirate’s neck, and Diegert knew it when he heard the vertebrae snap. The second guy was coughing and struggling to breathe. Diegert noticed a knife on the man’s belt. He grabbed the man’s knife, slashed his throat, and plunged the blade into his chest. The pirate crumpled to the floor as blood bubbled out of his neck.

Three down, three to go. Diegert took the AK-47s and ascended the stairs. He tossed one to Barney and proceeded to the stern where the pirate’s skiff was tethered to the Sue Ellen. The men in the skiff were confused by the commotion on board. Diegert took full advantage of their lack of communication and their expectation that sailors wouldn’t fight back to open fire with the AK. The volley of bullets cut down two while striking the legs of the third.

With the dull illumination of the stern safety light, Diegert could see the third man was wounded, having fallen onto his back in the boat. Diegert’s weapon had a flashlight taped to it. Turning it on, he could see the remaining pirate better. The guy was young, maybe fifteen or sixteen, yet he had a rifle and was pointing it in Diegert’s direction. The defender of the Sue Ellen hesitated to see if the boy made any gesture of surrender. When the wounded pirate leveled his barrel at Diegert, he sealed his fate. With a rapid burst, the young sea robber’s life ended with bullets to the chest and head.

From the moment the second pirate went down into the cabin until the last shot was fired, barely two minutes had passed, and six lives had ended. Diegert’s adrenaline was on full blast, and he was still on point, making sure there were no other threats.

“Relax,” said Barney. “They’re all dead and we’re OK.”

Decanted Truths

Decanted Truths

By Melanie Forde

Genre: literary, historical, family saga, women’s

For Irish immigrant families like the Harrigans and Gavagans, struggle has been the name of the game since they arrived in Boston in the nineteenth century. For twice-orphaned Leah Gavagan, who comes of age in the Depression, the struggle is compounded by bizarre visions that disrupt her daily life — and sometimes come true. She has difficulty fitting in with her surroundings: whether the lace-curtain Dorchester apartment overseen by her judgmental Aunt Margaret or the wild Manomet bluff shared with her no-nonsense Aunt Theo and brain-damaged Uncle Liam. A death in the family disrupts the tepid life path chosen for Leah and sets her on a journey of discovery. That journey goes back to the misadventures shaping the earlier generation, eager to prove its hard-won American credentials in the Alaskan gold rush, the Spanish-American War, and The Great War. She learns of the secrets that have bound Theo and Margaret together. Ultimately, Leah learns she is not who she thought she was. Her new truth both blinds and dazzles her, much like the Waterford decanter at the center of her oldest dreams — an artifact linking three Irish-American families stumbling after the American Dream.

About the Author

Raised in a Boston Irish family, Melanie Forde knew her life was infinitely easier than that of her ancestors, refugees from the Potato Famine. The storytelling skills of her elders kept ancestral triumphs and tragedies alive, so that the Potato Famine and the Easter Rebellion felt as real as the Cold War. Inheriting the storyteller gene, Ms. Forde is the author of three earlier novels, her Hillwilla trilogy. She now lives far from her roots, on a West Virginia farm. She still maintains a potato patch—just in case.

Excerpt from Chapter One

With The Dream’s first visit, [Leah] had no tools of interpretation. A toddler … has no way of understanding the sensory input from deep within a sailing vessel. It took years of dreaming, reading, and schooling to identify the venue, to understand that great linen sails would snap in the wind, that the wind itself often assumed a tormented human voice, that a wooden hull would creak in protest against a rolling, pitching sea.

The Dream didn’t have much of a plot but offered vignettes of life in steerage, from the perspective of one specific passenger. Through his eyes, Leah saw care-worn faces of all ages.

The bodies supporting those faces were generally far too thin and covered in shabby, soiled clothing. The garments suggested a different era. Leah witnessed snippets of diverse human dramas: incipient love affairs, marriages fraying under the stress of the ocean odyssey, the imminence of death for some…

The passenger sharing visions with the dreamer would retreat to a recess tucked behind a hanging lantern. Leah eventually realized her guide was a boy. She never saw his face, any more than she could see her own face without benefit of a mirror. But she could see his short, thin limbs. Moreover, that recess appeared too restricted to accommodate an adult. And from the dreamer’s early twentieth-century perspective, the passenger’s odd-looking pants were a reliable indicator of a male body underneath the cloth. Nor could Leah imagine any female, even the most impoverished, putting up with such spectacularly ugly shoes. In the privacy of his hidey hole, the boy would invariably remove his boots briefly and rub his feet as if in pain. Naked, the right foot twisted horribly inward. The deformity so repelled the young dreamer that she sometimes would shake herself awake.

Eventually, she realized the scary sight was worth tolerating. After the boy finished rubbing his feet, his grubby fingers would reach for a burlap bag tucked even more deeply into the recess. His hands would then extract something swathed in oilcloth. Once unwrapped, the contents exploded with shards of lantern light in a dizzying array of colors. Looking down at the object in the boy’s lap, Leah could see his chest and belly expand briefly. Then those small hands would rewrap the light-filled wonder in the filthy oilcloth and return it to the burlap sack.

With a shove from his good foot, he would push the bag deeper into the ship’s cavity.

The hidden object filled the darkest corners of the dreamer’s soul with light. With beauty.

With hope. It stirred every corpuscle in her blood.

This is an amazing book and one I recommend checking out!!

The Force of Evil has continuously attempted to complete the destruction of humankind since the dawn of time. Soon after Kristian’s brain is removed and placed in stasis, he is approached by The Guardian. The Guardian is a spiritual being who watches for timelines that are going astray and threatening the existence of humanity. The Guardian enlists Kristian’s mind, untethered from his corporeal body, to control the actions of individuals key in keeping a timeline on its predestined course. In his current spiritual state, Kristian is able to travel to any period in the past or the future with The Guardian in order to affect changes to a timeline gone astray. With Kristian’s spirit in tow, The Guardian travels back in time to the U.S. Civil War to counter a threat to the timeline in which the Union won the war is in jeopardy. But prior to the procedure his mind is scanned and stored for download to a cyborg body. Aaron is approached by The Guardian as his mind is also separated from his corporeal body. His assignment from The Guardian confronts a rift in time that threatens the outcome of World War II, and ultimately, the free world.Kristian Barnett and Aaron Adams, under the guidance of The Guardian then travel forward to the year 2052. The founding CEO of a high-tech information management company and two multi-billion-dollar telecommunication moguls have developed a new smartphone supporting an advanced communications technology. This technology enables the ability to control a user’s thoughts and actions without the knowledge or consent of the user. The new smartphone and communications technology are promoted to the Military as a means of controlling the actions of an enemy. The intent of the billionaire cabal is to use the technology to ultimately establish a dystopian world in which the billionaire elites and their ruling class government puppets would live in opulence while the masses were enslaved to serve their masters. My Review

5 Stars

Kristian Barnett and Aaron Adams are two men with severe cases of ALS that are many years apart. Although their bodies are compromised their brains are not. They both go through a procedure to remove their brains and place them in cyborgs. But they find when they are no longer in their bodies they are contacted by a being called The Guardian.

The Guardian keeps the timelines running on the same course to keep evil from ruling the world. The men are given a task to go back to the Civil War and World War II to keep everything running smoothly. But their own timelines are about to be affected when the technology for placing the brains in the cyborgs is threatened.

Billionaire Kristian is suffering from ALS but with the help of his scientist wife has the potential to regain his life again. Of course the military is going to pull the project, even if it was Kristian’s money that funded it. I loved this part of the story. There is so much thought put into this that I could see it happening in ten years in real life.

Then there are the timelines. It is amazing to me how one even can be pivotal in the world and how just one little thing could have changed history for the worse. I love how we see this in two separate timelines. It really drives home how important little things in history really are.

This is an amazing story. It has a little bit of every gerera in it. The medical knowledge of ALS, the scifi bit of cyborgs, and I loved the history of each timeline. This is one heck of a ride and one I recommend checking out. For a first book I admit that I was blown away.

I would like to thank Sherri Rosen for the opportunity to read and share this book.

“Where do you suppose he thinks he’s going?”

The Buellander spy had cut his bonds on the sharp rocks and was scurrying away toward the east. Shale and sand slipped beneath his boots as he wobbled on his feet. They’d lose sight of him in a moment when the base of Mount Crumble curved toward the northeast.

“Wherever he’s going, he won’t get there quickly.” Henry chuckled at the spy’s departing back.

“You saved our lives, Seth.” Cal shrugged and looked down at his boots. “That wet rat might have… Well, here. You carry the flag.”

“Agreed,” Bear and Henry echoed.

“We’ll all see it safely into Phoenix’ hand.” Seth tucked it in his tunic for safekeeping. “Morning is leaving us. We’d better take our spy back to the outpost.” Seth looked across the water toward the shore. “Where did he go?”

“Back to the spy cave, I hope.” Bear took the lead as they hurried away across the land bridge.

Sudden prickles of anxiety raced along Seth’s spine as they fought their way again up Mount Crumble. Something was wrong. The Jalora was unsettled. He pushed his feet harder, but the aggressive movements sent the shale sliding. Test done, he was free to use his full power. With the wind wrapped about him, Seth danced on the raindrops as they fell.

Finally reaching the top of Mount Crumble, Seth let his boots touch down lightly on the slippery rock. He could see mercenary troops crawling slowly through the bogs toward the outpost. The Buellander spy must have signaled them when he’d found the apprentices asleep in his cave. Jalora save them. Seth’s vision was coming to life on the pathways of North Marsh.

“What is it?” Henry asked, coming to a panting halt beside him. “By my blood. How is this possible?”

“I’ve been such a fool!” Seth slammed a fist against his leg. “I should have sent the signal as soon as we tied up the spy last night.”

He’d promised Phoenix. Now his lapse in judgment had jeopardized the outpost and Andara. Four apprentices couldn’t stop the hundreds of trained warriors bound for murder. The outpost was doomed to its fate.

Author Profile

Suzanne lives in Middlesex, England with her husband, two children, a highly strung cat and a crazy puppy.

Her writing journey began at the age of twelve when she completed her first novel. She discovered the fantasy genre in her late teens and has never looked back. Giving up work to raise a family gave Suzanne the impetus to take her attempts at novel writing beyond the first draft, and she is lucky enough to have a husband who supports her dream – even if he does occasionally hint that she might think about getting a proper job one day.

Now an author of four novels including the recently completed Silent Sea Chronicles trilogy and a Czech translation of her debut, Visions of Zarua, Suzanne hopes the dreaded ‘W’ word will never rear its ugly head again!

She loves gardening and has a Hebe (shrub) fetish. She enjoys cooking with ingredients from the garden and regularly feeds unsuspecting guests vegetable-based cakes.

Suzanne collects books, is interested in history and enjoys wandering around castles and old ruins whilst being immersed in the past. She likes to combine her love of nature and photography on family walks, but most of all she loves to escape with a great film, binge watch TV shows, or soak in a hot bubble bath with an ice cream and a book.
