Synopsis:
What if every time you told the truth, evil followed?
My name is Melody Fisher. My daddy was a snake handler in Appalachia until Mama died. Though years have passed, I can still hear the rattle before the strike that took her from me.
And it’s all my fault.
Since then, I’ve been passed around from foster home to foster home. I didn’t think anything could be as bad as losing Mama.
I was wrong.
But I will not speak of things people have done to me. Every time I do, worse evil follows. Now, the only thing I trust is what saved me years ago.
Back when I would sing the snakes calm …

My Review
5 Stars
Melody Fisher is sixteen years old and has lived a rough life. She was raised by a man that gathered rattlesnakes for their church. But Melody has a gift, her voice, she can even charm that snakes. But she realizes quickly when she speaks the truth horrible things happen, like her mother being bitten by one of the snakes and her father disappearing.
For several years Melody has been bounced around in the foster system going from bad to worse situations but all the while not talking. Then she is on trial for stabbing a student at school. Even then she cannot bring herself to talk about what happened to save herself. But a court appointed therapist thinks she can find the way to Melody’s voice with music.
Oh my goodness, where to begin with this book. Melody is a beautiful person that has found trouble seems to find her. She feels that when she speaks the truth it means something bad is going to happen and quits talking. This in itself makes me just want to gather her up and protect her from herself.
But then she stabs a student at school. Everyone thinks she did it because of the foster homes and being a mixed blood kid. The thing that would save her would be to open up and speak the truth of what happened but she can’t find her voice after not talking for so long.
This is an amazing story that just sucks you in to this poor girl’s life. I understand why she thinks speaking the truth is going to cause problems but it just breaks your heart as you read the story. I loved
