Flight Risk

by Cara Putman

on Tour April 1-30, 2020

Synopsis:

Flight Risk by Cara Putman

Bestselling author Cara Putman returns with a romantic legal thriller that will challenge the assumptions of truth tellers everywhere.

Savannah Daniels has worked hard to build her law practice, to surround herself with good friends, and to be the loyal aunt her troubled niece can always count on. But since her ex-husband’s betrayal, she has trouble trusting anyone.

Jett Glover’s father committed suicide over a false newspaper report that ruined his reputation. Now a fierce champion of truth, Jett is writing the story of his journalism career—an international sex-trafficking exposé that will bring down a celebrity baseball player and the men closest to him, including Savannah’s ex-husband.

When Jett’s story breaks, tragedy ensues. Then a commercial airline crashes, and one of Savannah’s clients is implicated in the crash. Men connected to the scandal, including her ex, begin to die amid mysterious circumstances, and Savannah’s niece becomes an unwitting target.

Against their better instincts, Jett and Savannah join ranks to sort the facts from fiction. But can Savannah trust the reporter who threw her life into chaos? And can Jett face the possibility that he’s made the biggest mistake of his life?

Read an excerpt:

The conversation flowed over the antipasti course and into the pasta della casa. Every bite of Savannah’s manicotti alla fiorentina was wonderful, the ricotta and spinach blending perfectly. Just when she knew she couldn’t take another bite and get anything done afterward, thanks to the food coma, a waiter came out with a slice of cheesecake. Her mouth watered as she took in the raspberries atop the homemade delight. She put a hand on her stomach and then smiled. “I hope you brought fresh forks for everyone.” The handsome waiter flashed a bright smile. “Whatever the birthday donna wishes is my command.” He gave a slight bow and turned away. A moment later when he returned, a fist of forks at the ready, his demeanor had changed. Emilie watched him a moment. “What’s wrong, Antonio?” “There has been a horrible accident. It is on the TV in the office.” “What kind of accident?” Savannah leaned toward him. “Does it involve someone you know?” “No.” The man shook his head, and not one of his dark hairs moved. Yet his eyes were weighted with sadness and the shadow of something more. “It is a plane. It looks bad.” “Oh no.” The memory of a plane careening by as she looked out a courtroom window in downtown Washington, DC, years earlier flashed through her mind. Savannah fought a shudder as she withdrew a credit card from her phone case and placed it on the bill, only for Hayden to slide it back to her and replace it with her own. “Thank you.” Please let this be a terrible accident and not the beginning of another 9/11. Jaime’s head was bowed over her phone as she clicked the screen. “Looks like an isolated crash.” All Savannah could think was that Jaime should add so far to her sentence. “That’s what we all thought on 9/11 too.” Then a second plane careened into the Twin Towers. She saw the plane that hit the Pentagon, and a fourth plane crashed in Pennsylvania, killing one of her fellow law students. She cleared her throat and stood, motioning the gals to join her. “Let’s get back to work and see what we can learn.” As they left her favorite restaurant, her phone buzzed and she paused to pull it out of her pocket. She glanced at the text message on the screen and her blood froze. 911. From Addy. Their emergency code. *** Excerpt from Flight Risk by Cara Putman. Copyright 2020 by Cara Putman. My Review

5 Stars

Savannah Daniels has built her law firm and does everything she can for her niece. But he has a hard time trusting people after what her ex-husband put her through. Jett Glover is a reporter that saw his father commit suicide after a false report ruined his reputation. Jett has put together a huge story about sex-trafficking that will put light on several important people.

When Jett is sure he has all the information he releases the article. Of all the people he exposes, one of them is Savannah’s ex-husband. Then things go spinning off course when one of Savannah’s clients are implicated in a plane crash. Then the people Jett has exposed start being murdered.

I liked both Savannah and Jett. They are great characters that I came to enjoy reading about. I felt bad for Savannah, but she has done well for herself and is an amazing aunt. I really felt for Jett, what a horrible thing to live with and I encouraged him with exposing the sex-trafficking. I really wanted them to get together and I have to say that I really enjoy a book where it is more about them getting close than hopping into bed.

Of course, the story was filled with lots of twists and turns and kept me guessing. The book wrapped up perfectly. I cannot believe that I have not read any other books from Cara Putman. I will have to change that immediately!!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.

The darkness kissed her, embraced her. Squinting, Emory tried to make sense of where she was but was met with a black, dense wall. Sweat pooled at the base of her neck, warmth flaring through her body. Fear choked her then as she gulped down stale air. She knew she wasn’t alone because she felt them before they said anything. “Emory, you need to wake up.” Memphis’s voice, just barely a whisper, caressed her. Right beside her left ear, another voice sounded. “Em, wake up.” Brokk’s rough voice was harsh and clear, but she felt her body still being pulled, pulled down into the black abyss. A third voice then sounded; one she could only recognize from her dreams. “Emory, darling, wake up.” Her mother. Her voice danced all around her, and she clawed blindly, trying to connect with her lost friends and family. Trying to find them. Silence landed heavy, and a putrid smell enveloped her senses. It smelled of rotting meat. Bile rose in her throat as a she felt a slimy, boney hand wrap hard around her wrists, pulling her toward it. She couldn’t scream; she couldn’t move. Sweat drenched every inch of her body as the creature she couldn’t make out leaned closer, whispering right in front of her, “Emory, I have found you.” Swivelling around, she was met with darkness until the monster pulled her closer, its breath tickling her ear. “And you belong to me.” The knife slid in between her ribs, pain blossoming, and cackles spun around her. Then, she was dragged down into the darkness.

Screams tore from her chest as she shot up. Drenched in a cold sweat, it took her several minutes to register where she was and the guard standing at the foot of her bed, arms crossed and eyebrows raised. She screamed again, pulling her blankets around her, her nightdress clinging to her curves. “Who gave you permission to be in here?” she demanded. Smirking arrogantly, he said, “I did.” Blinking, she recognized the man as the same one that guarded her down in the cells. Rubbing her eyes, she tried to shake the feeling of that damp death-like hold of the creature in her dream. She pointed to the door. “Get the hell out.” He scoffed, rolling his eyes. “It’s time to start your day. The king awaits.” Throwing a bundle at the bottom of her bed, he turned his back, briskly stating, “You have five minutes to get ready. I’ll wait outside.” Shutting the door, he left her in stark silence. It was time. Panic clutched her heart, squeezing it, threatening to break it. She couldn’t breathe. The walls seemed stretched too thin.

She could do this—she had to do this. Emory would grant the rebels the time they needed, the time she needed. Dying wasn’t an option. Besides, she was already dead to the people who had believed in her. Leaning forward with shaking hands, she opened the parcel. Several stacks of light black clothes spilled out, including shirts, pants, and undergarments. A blood red sash sat atop them all. Lovely. Sitting on top all of this, though, was a light, sheer, gold chest plate. Squinting, she leaned closer to inspect it. Markings she didn’t recognize adorned all the edges, and its sheerness was unearthly. She was so close, her breath was fogging it, her reflection lost. Strong leather buckles joined at the shoulders; its back plate just as impressive. She shimmied out of bed, quickly dropping the armor. Emory went through the motions of getting dressed numbly. Braiding her long ebony hair back, she looked in the mirror behind her. She didn’t recognize the woman standing before her, the stark cheekbones, emptiness in her eyes, bruised skin underneath them. Tying her sash tightly, she set her resolve. Emory Fae of Earth was dead. Everything had led up to this moment. Her parents shaped their world, defying the paths they were told to go down: A warrior from the Shattered Isles and a Prince of Kiero were never supposed to break away and build a refuge— The Academy—for peace. In her heart, Emory knew they had made mistakes, but their life’s dream was to fight and to ensure everyone, no matter their ability, would have a place to call home. Emory loosened a breath. She would not let her parents’ dream die. If Adair wanted a challenge, he would get one. She would make him pay. For her family. Her friends. For herself.

Excerpt

“It was as if her body had been ripped into a thousand different pieces. Her lungs burned, begging for relief. Emory heard the soft crackle of fire. Her head was a spinning mass; it was its own continent. Squinting, she tried to focus. Blinking slowly, her surroundings came into view. Her pulse picked up. She wasn’t in her room. She wasn’t in her home. The metal world around her seemed to have one purpose. To keep people in. To keep her in. The last twenty-four hours rushed over her in a flurry of confusing memories. Him… Memphis. The name rolled around in her mind, familiar yet unfamiliar all at once. Her eyes flashed open, her heart thrumming with adrenaline. Heavily, Emory sat up, trying to pull her thoughts together. For now, the room was empty, her captors gone. Now. This is your chance to escape. The thought clambered through her wildly, and she acted. Standing from the bed, Emory stumbled, her legs weak, her clothes dirtied. Breathing heavily, Emory ran to the door, pushing the handle down as it opened. Containing her surprise, she slipped into the hallway. What kind of criminals would keep their prisoner in an unlocked room? Walking fast, Emory pushed the thought down, keeping her head down as she tried to locate how to get out of this place. The hallway was quiet, and Emory didn’t pass anyone else. It had to be late into the night, and she sent up a thank you to whoever was granting her such luck. Trying not to run, she turned left, passing more shut unmarked doors, but slowly, the hallway slanted up. Heart pounding, her palms slicked with sweat as she tried to stick to the shadows, walking faster now. Ahead of her, doors loomed, and panic bloomed in her chest. Running now, Emory tried to hold back the tears burning in her eyes. She reached the massive doors, pulling them open, and the night air slammed into her. Gasping, she sprinted, rushing out into the rolling field. The air was brisk, a sweet aroma hanging on the wind, the crescent moon tucked in the midnight blue clouds. Ahead, a massive forest loomed, and she frantically looked for any sign of modern civilization where she could find help. There was nothing. A stitch laced through her side, and her converses lost footing. Emory slammed into the damp earth. Rocks sliced through her palms as she tried to break her fall, blood welling in the cuts. Tears slid down her cheeks as she got up, whispering, “Keep moving. C’mon.” Looking back, she expected to see the place she had been taken to, but dread pooled in her stomach as all she saw was open field—no sign of any building whatsoever. “What the hell?” Emory whispered, fear making her thought process choppy. Sprinting again, she pushed toward the woods.”

The tales of ghostly appearances are said to be more fact than fiction, but no one has ever documented the phenomenon. Codie Jackson aims to change all that. Arriving from London with his small independent film crew, they plan to make a documentary that will forever change their lives.

But when one of the crew disappears, things begin to spiral out of control. A storm closes in to ravage the island, and in the darkness Highland Cove’s true horrors are revealed. She hesitated, and then stepped to the partially opened door. Raising her hand, she brushed fingers over dried paint peeling from the timber. Leaning further forward she stared through the opening at a floor coated with dirt and the remains of a building crumbling on its foundations.

A door slammed shut in the building’s depths.

Wind whistled through the gap with the murmur of a whispered voice.

With a gasp Kristen stepped away, gaze fixed on the door, expecting it to widen at any moment.

A hand pressed into the small of her back and she flinched again, spinning from the touch. Liam stepped onto the porch, pushing his phone into his pants pocket. He looked at her, his smile settling her nerves somewhat.

“Are you okay?”

Clearing her throat and shrugging her rucksack higher on her shoulders, she nodded, gave a nervous chuckle. “I’m fine. I guess this place is kind of spooky.”

“It’s the final resting place of thousands of tortured souls. It’s spooky as hell.”

Liam gave her a subtle wink, but if he was teasing her she didn’t need it right now. The rhythm of her heart had yet to settle, hairs rigid on the back of her neck. Liam stepped to the entryway, his hand almost at the door.

“Be careful, Liam.”

“What is it?”

She hesitated, swallowed hard. “I thought I heard something from inside, that’s all. A bang, like a door closing.”

“Really?” Liam said, and raised his eyebrows. “They know we’re here, then.”

His smile widened, and he pushed through the door into the asylum.

My Review

5 Stars

Highland Cove Sanatorium is an abandoned facility on an island one mile off the coast of Scotland. It has a haunted history that has drawn people over the years. Codie Jackson is determined to prove that the hauntings are real or fake. Him and four others travel to Highland Cove and start filming.

When they get there a storm blows in and keeps them trapped on the island. Once filming starts a crew member disappears and everyone gets lost in the maze of the sanatorium. It is starting to become clear that Highland Cove is haunted and they ghost’s mean to keep the film crew with them.

The crew has some that think the haunting are fake and some that want to prove they are real. I began to relate to each person and hoped that they all would make it out although I highly doubted it. There are twists and turns throughout the book and reveals that left me breathless.

This is the first book that I have read from Dylan Morgan. All I can say is WOW!!! I was instantly drawn into the story and kept on the edge of my seat as I read. I love the dark stories and you add in a haunted sanatorium and I am in love.

If you love dark stories, hauntings, and other things that will creepy you out you need to check out this book. I can’t wait to dig into Dylan’s other stories.

Its Charlie’s first day of high school. But when they are done sorting the kids there are at least 15 that don’t have a class. In comes Professor Brittle with a new adventure for the kids. Professor Brittle runs the Brittle Academy for the Magically Unstable. Charlie finds himself with several kids from other schools that are tested to find what group they will be in.

This is a wonderful short read that will surely please mid grade readers and adults alike. This is a short read about Charlie’s first day and finding out what class he will be in. I loved this introduction to this world and hope that there are more books to come.

I recommend checking out this wonderful read. Those that like Harry Potter will be as captivated with this new world as I was.

The Wingless Angel
Ex-Army Medic, Silton, has had a rough go of late. Soon after being discharged from the military his wife suffered a tragic accident, then slipped into a coma and died. Now alone, drinking fills his days, and restless sleep plagues his nights.
He feels that God is finished with him, that he has no purpose in life, so he ends it all.
He falls. Naked and confused, he falls.
Silton awakens on a taught expanse of warm Skin Land. Acrid air stings his lungs, tiny hairs jut up like grass under his feet, and the pale blue eye of Heaven stares down on him.
In the distance he hears a scream, and as he bounds towards it, finds a fetid swamp of others who have fallen, sinking into the soupy flesh. Quick to his training Silton pulls a woman out of the mess, only to find her legs ravaged with breaks. Using his medical skills and the flesh around him, he binds her injuries, easing her pain.
Far off in the distance, on their huge moving home called the Sled, a group of demons set off on a journey out into the Skin Land to harvest those lucky enough to survive the fall. Those like Silton.
Silton drags his newfound friend to a distant shelter of bone as they share the reflections of life that have brought them here. With each step the mystery of this place unfolds revealing its true beauty, and its terrifying reality.
As the demons draw near, and the pale blue eye of Heaven watches above, it becomes clear that God is not finished with Silton. God has a new purpose for him, a purpose for him in Hell.
“Sin follows the sinner, it does not lead them.”

His works consistently push the reader to a deeper knowledge of themselves both mentally and physically, while daring into the fantastical and bizarre.
My Review
5 stars

Silton is a former army medic that has hit rock bottom. He lost his wife three years earlier to a hit and run driver. He decides he can’t take anymore and commits suicide. He then finds himself in Hell. He finds another person that lands there and they start off on a journey through Hell together.

At the same time we learn about the Devil, demons, and what it takes to keep this show running. It seems one of the main demons is the last of his class and the Devil wants him to disappear. That those that have been sent to Hell can earn redemption and that Silton is going to have a bigger role in this upcoming battle than just being an Unbroken.

This is a dark and wonderful story. I felt for both Silton and Monthly in this weird Hell. I love how important the body is to the world and the Devil’s curse. It is full of strange creatures that all have their place.

I quickly got into this story and had a hard time putting the book down for sleep and work. The ending was unexpected and great and I’m really hoping that there will be more to come in this world. I am definitely hooked.

The Tower

The Tower by Anne-Marie Ormsby

Sometimes the dead come back. And sometimes all they want is to hurt you.

When residents on an east London housing estate start dying in gruesome ways, housing manager Ada begins to worry that her past is coming back to haunt her.

Once a powerful medium, able to talk to the dead with amazing ease, she became more comfortable with the afterlife than real life, and with that openness she attracted something dark from the other side. Terrified by the experience she swore she would never communicate with the dead again.

Ten years later at the scene of an apparent suicide, her long closed-down connection to the dead is reopened, and she begins to receive information she shouldn’t know about the victims’ final moments.

Stalked in her dreams and in waking life by an angry male presence, Ada begins to relive the dark days when something from the other side wanted her to end her life.

But as the bodies stack up and the visions intensify, Ada realises that in order to stop more people from dying she has to let the dead back in to find out the truth of what is driving her residents to violent acts – and face up to her own ghosts.

About the Author

On a warm day in July 1978, a mother was admitted to hospital, awaiting the arrival of her new baby. She was reading Sleeping Murder by Agatha Christie and the midwives thought it a gruesome choice for an expectant mother. A story of a long forgotten murder and repressed memories. As it turned out her new baby, Anne-Marie would grow up and find herself drawn to all things macabre, and would one day herself turn out a story of murder and memories lost.

Anne Marie grew up on the Essex coast with her parents and six siblings in a house that was full of books and movies and set the scene for her lifelong love of both.

She began writing short stories when she was still at primary school after reading the book The October Country by Ray Bradbury. He was and still is her favourite author and the reason she decided at age 9 that she too would be a writer someday.

In her teens she continued to write short stories and branched out into poetry, publishing a few in her late teens. In her early twenties she began committing herself to writing a novel and wrote one by the age of 20 that she then put away, fearing it was too weird for publication.

She wrote Purgatory Hotel over several years, but again kept it aside after several rejections from publishers. Luckily for her, she found a home for her twisted tale with Crooked Cat Books.

Her favourite authors include Ray Bradbury, Jack Kerouac, Stephen King, Denis Lehane and Douglas Coupland. She also takes great inspiration from music and movies, her favourite artists being Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Johnny Cash, Interpol, David Lynch and David Fincher.

After 11 happy years in London she recently moved to Margate where she currently lives with her family.

My Review

At one time Ada was a huge medium with an exceptional connection to the other side until some from the dark came for her. It has been ten years since she last used her abilities. Now she manages an apartment tower and one of her residents has died from suicide, at least it looks that way. But Ada is haunted by the ghost and tries to block out what she is being told.

Then more people start dying. Ada knows that she is going to have to open herself up to the other side and is afraid to. Soon she has phantom stalker, Michael that is pure evil and determined to kill Ada and anyone else he can get.

This is a dark story that I absolutely loved. Ada has her flaws which made me like her so much more. I understand why she turned her back on her gift and how hard it was to go back to using it. I just wanted things to work out for her, she really needed the break.

There are some very dark topics of suicide and abuse that really added to the story and stuck with my after I finished the book. This story is well written, sucked me in from the beginning, and left me wanting more from this world. If you like dark thrillers with a twist of paranormal added in you will love this book.

Daylight’s Deadly Kiss (Blood Riders Book Two) by Jay Raven

In 19th century Europe the most deadly vampire-killing weapon ever devised is up for grabs – and both the Undead and the living will stop at nothing to possess it…

It’s a legend, a fairy story parents tell frightened children to make them sleep. Basium Lucis – Daylight’s Kiss – the fabled compound that recreates sunlight in a bottle, and incinerates bloodsucking monsters on contact.

Vampire hunter Anton Yoska doesn’t believe in its existence or the whispered rumours of its creation by Leonardo Da Vinci 250 years before.

But when a mysterious Hungarian arts dealer claims to have uncovered the long-lost formula, Anton’s cynicism is shaken to the core as he is tasked to procure the pyrotechnic marvel for the Vatican’s centuries-old battle with the vampire sect known as the Brethren.

In a desperate race to beat nosferatu forces intent on destroying the wonder weapon, and cold-blooded gangsters who desire the Alchemist’s most prized invention for their own aggrandisement and riches, Anton is caught in a maelstrom of double dealing and lies..

Traps loom at every turn, and nothing is what it appears, but acquiring the Basium Lucis is the least of the his problems  – for the ferocious Modjeski vampire family want retribution for his slaughter of their clan chief a year before. And old flame and rival slayer, Nadia, has her own devious plans to thwart Anton’s quest.

As time runs out and predators circle, the beleaguered hunter realises he’s been tricked into a suicide mission. But Anton Yoska won’t go down without a fight – and he doesn’t care who he takes to Hell with him.

Anton Yoska is a vampire hunter that is barely scraping by with his little group of the dwarf Quintz, helper Toby, and Samson the bear. They accept an odd job that leads them to the crowned prince Leopold. Supposedly Leonardo created a formula that is sunlight in a bottle. The Vatican wants Anton to find the formula for them.

But Anton is not the only one hunting it, someone from his past is looking for the formula and is willing to betray him for it. Also, the Modjeski vampire clan is out for blood after they lost their leader the year prior to Anton. Although Anton knows the odds are stacked against him but he is willing to put up one heck of a fight.

I admit that I have not read the first book but it didn’t take me long to get the idea of what was going on. I’m sure if I would have read Crimson Siege I could relate more to the characters. I did like the group and was cheering them on although I wondered about Anton having been half turned.

I liked this story. There was a lot of action and some gore, which is to be expected. I really want to go back and read the first book to catch up on what I missed. I think this is a good read and I would be interested in reading the next book.

My Review

We have come to the last book in this amazing series and I admit that I couldn’t wait to see what happened yet was so hesitant to leave this world. Time has run out and Alyx can’t see any way out of this mess without getting Tyron involved, if he doesn’t kill her first.

Tommy does get riled up and is very strong but can only be calmed by Alyx and is nonresponsive the rest of the time. Alyx manages to find Mia and gets her to help bring Tommy back a little from the edge along with teasing that she may be able to make a cure from him.

Will is in Sinter’s hands and is being tortured. Thankfully he has Carl next to him to help give him the opportunities to semi survive the Altering but explains that the end results are usually Oblivion. The only thing keeping him alive is Sinter is still looking for Tommy, for the moment.

I could not read this book fast enough to see how it ended. Poor Alyx just knows that Tyron is going to kill her but he is her only hope and it is putting a lot of stress on the group because they know that it will not end well. I really felt for her trying everything she could to save Tommy. And Colt, I’ll not spoil that one.

I have to say that my two favorite people in this book were Pati and Carl. Each really added to the story in their unique little ways. But the ending!! OMG!! What the heck?!?

This is an amazing series and one that I recommend checking out. I think you will really enjoy it. I can’t wait to read what Pixie comes up with next.
