My Review

5 stars

Ohio has a lot of history that is both good and bad. But with the bad we will find those that just can’t or don’t want to pass on giving us haunted locations. Kat Klockow, a paranormal investigator and radio host has picked ten locations across Ohio to investigate. Follow along as Kat investigates a bed and breakfast, jails, penitentiaries, and the sites of a couple murders.

I love how Kat has put this book together. You learn of the history of the locations, events, and the sightings. Then there is a conclusion for each location and visitor information for some sites. I love the detail that has gone into the books especially the color photos. There is so much history surrounding each location that it makes sense that there have to be some kind of energy left behind. Along with the history there are numerous sightings and experiences that people have had.

This book is perfect for those that like ghosts and the paranormal that surrounds them. The stories are sure to give you the creeps. If you like ghosts and if you live in or planning on visiting Ohio I would recommend checking out a couple of these places.

(Extra)Ordinary: Inspirational Stories of Everyday People

(Extra)Ordinary: Inspirational Stories of Everyday People by Keith Maginn

Inside each seemingly ordinary person is an extraordinary story waiting to be told.

That’s what author Keith Maginn discovered when he dug deeper to learn more about many of the people in his everyday life.

One friend had overcome an addiction to crack cocaine.

Another had lost a son in a tragic accident and started a foundation in his honor.

Yet another was a survivor of the worst plane crash in Central American history.

Each of the stories featured in (Extra)Ordinary will touch your heart, stir your soul, and open your eyes to the amazing people who are all around you.

You’ll learn to look for the incredible in the seemingly mundane, and you’ll be reminded that everyone–including you–is anything but ordinary.

My Review

Everyone has their own stories. Sometimes we know a little about it but most times we are oblivious to others. I admit that it is easy to find myself thinking about me, what I’m going through, what I want to do and such. But to truly understand ourselves we should look outwards.

(Extra)Ordinary is one of those books that opens our eyes to those around us. From friends, co-workers or someone you meet shopping. We all have our own struggles and how we cope. These things can be overwhelming and can feel like everything has gone to hell. But living with them and finding that reason to keep going can be the inspiration that others need.

This is a great book about some of Keith Maginn’s friends. But reading about them has made me realize that we all struggle in life. The key is to keep going and reading these stories is a great way to encourage you to keep fighting. This is a truly moving story and one that will help you get through tough times. Definitely check out (Extra)Ordinary: Inspirational Stories of Everyday People.

To purchase (Extra)Ordinary: Inspirational Stories of Everyday People make sure to check out Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Goodreads and Keith Maginn’s website.

I received (Extra)Ordinary: Inspirational Stories of Everyday People for free from KiCam Projects in exchange for an honest review.

A Confession

A Confession by William Aicher

How far would you go to clear your own conscience? Would you destroy another’s integrity purely to ensure your own absolution? In ‘A Confession,’ we are confronted by a man who’s reached the limit of what even he can rationalize as within the limits of his own morality. Having reached his breaking point, he reaches out in desperation to purify his own conscience, spilling the secrets of his life that have formed the man he has become – even if doing so means destroying others in the process.

In this modern tale of amorality, William F. Aicher takes us through the memories of a man who, while having lived a life of confident righteousness, now questions the very fiber of which he is made. Taking inventory of a life defined by substance abuse, love, sex, politics and a newfound ease of inflicting public shame with the help of social media, ‘A Confession’ invites the reader to take a seat and listen to a man come to grips with his own secrets.

As these truths are exposed, the rationality and logic behind them begins to unfurl, leaving both the narrator and reader ultimately questioning if indeed any of us can claim to be truly good.

William F. Aicher is the author of the upcoming novel, A Confession, and two previous books. He works a “day job” as the Chief Marketing Officer for online sheet music retailer, Musicnotes.com and is also a champion of intellectual property rights in the digital age. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2000 with degrees in philosophy and journalism and lives just outside Madison, WI with his wife and three sons.

My Review

We start the story with the narrator asking “Am I a good person?” We then follow along as he talks about different experiences in his life, some good, some bad and some questionable. But as you read you are drawn into this life. Yes, he does things that make you wonder about him yet before you start judging him he also points out that we have done stupid and questionable things in our own lives.

This story is engaging and makes you think about both the narrator’s life. I admit that I was not very fond of the narrator and the choices he made in life. But as you read the pieces of the puzzle for the narrator’s life start to fall into place and quickly you come to a surprising ending that wraps everything up nicely.

I really enjoyed reading this book. This is one book that will make you think more about yourself and the things you have done in your life. Could you ask yourself “Am I a good person?” and have an honest answer like the narrator has done in this book?

To purchase A Confession make sure to check out Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Goodreads and William Aicher’s website.

The last thing Zack Westland expects on a frigid night is to be summoned to an exorcism.

And Halley, the girl they’ve come to save, carries a secret that could unlock a centuries-old evil. She chants an eerie rhyme, and she isn’t alone…

“HANDS TO TAKE AND EYES TO SEE.

A MOUTH TO SPEAK. HE COMES FOR ME.”

As Zack’s secrets spill out, far more than his life is at stake, for Halley is linked to an ancient conspiracy. Yet Zack can’t help her unless he’s willing to risk losing his immortality—and reigniting the Blood Wars.

My Review

Zach is an angel and you begin with him trying to work out the perfect shot in a video game when he is interrupted by a girl that was send to get him to help with an exorcism. Father Frank knows about Zach even though Zack knows nothing about him. Zach is asked to help Halley, a girl with autism that is under attack from some evil things. She is the one that Father Frank wants to perform the exorcism on.

Zack is a great character. He has memory loss thinks about the loss of his girlfriend but wraps himself in his games and geek side to get through life. Father Frank was a great companion for Zack. He has so much knowledge and finally give Zack the friend that he needs to talk to.

But I have to say that Halley caught me from the start with her seeing Zach’s wings upon interdiction and telling him that she won’t tell anyone else. It has to be horrible to have such a mind and be stuck inside yourself like Halley. Michelle Belanger fleshed out Halley and made her the star of this book.

I admit that I have not read Conspiracy of Angels. There were references to events in that book but I didn’t feel like I was missing much. Having said that, I really enjoyed Harsh Gods and will definitely be adding Conspiracy of Angels to my list.

Cost of Survival

Cost of Survival (Worth of Souls – 1) by Bonnie R. Paulson

My dad predicted World War III would happen in our lifetime. He was right.

Mom’s bleeding in my arms right now. She could die any moment, but not before she’s made me promise three things:

Pray.

Don’t trust anyone.

Stay alive.

I promised, but I don’t know if I can keep them. Not surviving World War III doesn’t scare me, it’s surviving it that does.

If you’re looking for a great dystopia romance, this book is for you

From the bestselling dystopian fiction author with over 2000 reviews and ratings of her dystopic books across Goodreads, Amazon and other retailers.

My Review

5 stars

Kelly’s father knew that World War 3 was going to happen and prepared his family. But he dies before WW3 hits. One day at school, bombs are dropped and Kelly rushes home to her mother to find her calmly drinking tea. Kelly and her mother gather their things and head to the co-op that they are part of but upon arrival they learn there is a new leader and new rules. It’s not so safe at the co-op and they have to go on the run again. Kelly does meet up with a kid from school, Bodey and his father. Together they are going to try and survive.

I love apocalyptic stories and this is one of my new favorites. There is lots of action and great characters. Kelly questions her strength and faith as she tries to survive the attack and the evil of people and as she was thinking of all of these things it made me wonder if I am strong enough to be in her place, what I would do and such. I love her relationship with Bodey. You can tell they are getting close through survival but that a true relationship is forming.

It was easy to get sucked into this story. I planned on reading a couple chapters and ended up reading until the early hours of the morning to find out what was going to happen next. I loved how this story ended and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book, Exchange Rate. If you like apocalyptic stories look no further, you will NOT be disappointed in this one.

To purchase Cost of Survival make sure to visit Amazon (which is free for Kindle at the time of this review), Goodreads and Bonnie R. Paulson’s website.

Danny Lahti had it all: fame, fortune, friends, love – and an obsessed stalker.
Obsession can be a powerful curse. What happens when you think your world is perfect, but someone behind the scenes is determined to test you in every way possible? As the clock ticks toward the year 2000, Danny’s world starts unraveling without explanation. An unknown hacker unleashes a digital attach on his Internet company just months before its public debut. A prowler attempts to break into his historic mansion which houses, according to Hollywood rumor, secret vaults. A long-time friend goes missing. Is it all coincidence, or are these just the first feats by a crazed admirer determined to force the truth from Danny?
And what is the truth? The complicated days that follow force Danny to have another look at his own relationships, misdeeds, and damaged past. But will he ever learn the lesson that will satisfy the devil who taunts him?
Excerpt
C  H A  P  T  E  R    O N E

Midnight
Twenty minutes to midnight, and the ice on the frozen lake outside cracked. The loud reverberations of winter echoed through the night and invaded Danny Lahti’s peace.
Danny was prepared to let time  move  forward  in   whatever incremental way  it chose. At that moment . . . sitting on a sofa  in  an enormous  room  near  midnight  .  .  .  huddled  within  a  century-old hunting lodge  of a long-dead lumber tycoon . . . on  the shoreline of a lake  nearly forgotten in  the isolated woods of  northern Wisconsin, Danny Lahti was not concerned about the potential for a technological apocalypse as time turned to the year  2000.
But  he  did   feel   on   the  brink. Something was   about to  happen. Things should change;  they needed to change. He  couldn’t  really say why.   Danny never  felt he  was   the   introspective  type.  But he   had always felt connected to a larger universe, one  in  which he  received premonitions of what was to come.
The  end  of the century. Or maybe the start of a new  millennium. It depended on  the pundit. But  computers only  knew what they were programmed to  know, and   they weren’t  programmed to  deal   with changing from 1999  to 2000.  Maybe early computer  scientists never thought about a century starting anew. December 31, 1999  could prove an  existential threat. They called it “Y2K.” Who knows, maybe every generation deserved its opportunity to restart the clock.
For   Danny,  his   past  was   too  painful,  but   the  future  felt  too uncertain. In a way,  his life could be the snowdrift-covered lawns that surrounded  this house. On  the surface, the drifts were unblemished and  glistening in the weak  moonlight. But beneath their surface, under the  shapeless accumulated flakes,  were the  remains of years of living. If Danny had  the time and  the tools and  the  energy, he  could shovel his  way  into discovering the   dead flowerbeds, the   abandoned lawn furniture, and  the  century’s worth of trails across the  grounds. But who could be  bothered?  Eventually, the warm sun  of  spring would surely melt the snow. Just wait. The  past would be exposed.
Danny had  always been the kind  of person willing to wait. When he was only  twelve, his mother committed suicide and  he found her dead body. He  waited then,  always expecting someone  would eventually arrive  to  explain  what  had   happened  and   why.   When  his   father withdrew   into   a   hermit-like   life    that   barely  acknowledged  his adolescent son’s existence, Danny still waited. Someone would surely make his  father forget his  dead wife  and  remember his  child. He  was still waiting.
And  when Josh  came into his  life,  promising an  escape from these cold  woods into the warm, loving life  of the Los  Angeles sun,  Danny followed and  waited for Josh’s direction.
He  waited. He  always had.  Perhaps he  always would. It was  his nature not to rebel and  not to question, to try to be good  and  not rock the   boat.   A  new   year, a  new   century, a  new   millennium, not even “Y2K” could change that. Because Danny Lahti had  never been able  to find  the  energy to  grab the  reins of his  own  life. And  he  didn’t intend to start now.  And  yet something was changing. He felt it.
The  ice cracked again.  Nineteen minutes to midnight.

Falter Kingdom

Falter Kingdom by Michael Seidlinger

Hunter Warden just wants some peace and quiet. He wants to watch unboxing videos and be lulled to sleep by the monotone voices and smooth talking YouTube hosts. He wants his parents that are always working to either totally leave him alone or be around for once. After a few beers, Hunter decides to get away from it all and go for a run in Falter Kingdom.

When you run the gauntlet at Falter Kingdom, a tunnel next to a park on the outskirts of suburbia where local high school kids go to drink and smoke, one of two things can happen — nothing or you catch a demon.

The cold spots, locked doors, scratches on the wall, and disappearing laptop immediately alert Hunter to the fact that a demon is haunting him. He knows the signs, he’s seen the videos of people that are possessed, and everyone knows someone that has had to get an exorcism. Hunter knows that he should get rid of it, but he can’t help but enjoy the company of “H,” despite this demon’s sinister intentions.

My Review

3 stars

Hunter is an apathetic teenager that finds himself at Falter Kingdom one night. Falter Kingdom is a Tunnel that the local kids hang out to drink, smoke or make out. But it is also known as the place to get possessed by a demon. Hunter decides to run the tunnel and ends up possessed by H. Although he knows he should get H exorcised he is also lurid into the spell of H. H brings that missing spark back to Hunter’s life. The more that Hunter keeps H the further he falls under the spell and is less likely to exorcise him.

Hunter is a bland character that wants his parents to dote on him or leave him completely alone. He has no real desire to do anything and finds himself in the company of people he doesn’t like and won’t leave. He decides to be possessed and finds he likes H’s suggestions. I liked hwo the further you got in the story H went from a “he” to “us”. You could feel Hunter falling completely under H’s spell.

Unfortunately, Hunter was such a bland character that I found myself not really caring about him. Everyone around him was likewise flat. This was not a bad book but I thought that it would have a little more to it.

To purchase Falter Kingdom make sure to visit Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Goodreads and Michael Seidlinger’s website.

Raven’s Peak (World on Fire – 1) by Lincoln Cole

A quiet little mountain town is hiding a big problem. When the townsfolk of Raven’s Peak start acting crazy, Abigail Dressler is called upon to discover the root of the evil affecting people. She uncovers a demonic threat unlike any she’s ever faced and finds herself in a fight just to stay alive.

Abigail rescues Haatim Arison from a terrifying fate and discovers that he has a family legacy in the supernatural that he knows nothing about. Now she’s forced to protect him, which is easy, but also to trust him if she wants to save the townsfolk of Raven’s Peak. Trust, however, is something hard to have for someone who grew up living on the knife’s edge of danger.

Can they discover the cause of the town’s insanity and put a stop to it before it is too late?

fantasy-books-picture

My Review

5 stars

We start this story with Reverend Arthur Vangeest. He has been locked away for five years feeling horrible about the loss of Abigail. But then he learns that Abigail is alive and not possessed by a demon. Then we skip to Abigail. She is a demon slayer that works for the organization called the Council. She is wracked with guilt over the death of Arthur and what happened when she was possessed. But she learns that Arthur is alive, banished to Hell, and plans to rescue him even though she has been warned to not pursue Arthur.

In the meantime, Abigail is sent to protect Haatim, the son of a Council member. Together they are to travel to Raven’s Peak to figure out what is making the people act strange. This is going to be a crash course in heritage for Haatim and in how to fight demons. But what happens with it looks like Abigail just walked both Haatim and her into a trap.

I loved this story. This is not your normal demon slayer story, there is action, amazing fight scenes, and a kick butt story. It is fast paced and I had a hard time putting the book down, I just had to find out what was going to happen next. I loved Abigail, she keeps beating herself up over Arthur and the possession and just won’t let herself move on. Haatim is this blogger that gets a crash course in fighting demons and picks it up quickly.

If you are looking for a kick butt demon slayer story make sure to check out Raven’s Peak. I can’t wait for book 2.

To purchase Raven’s Peak make sure to check out Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Goodreads, and Lincoln Cole’s website.
