Not everything hidden in the closet is scary, even if it’s furry and has sharp claws! Every teenager’s dream come true and every parent’s worst nightmare, Megan’s Munchkins is a short and sweet tale about a middle-school girl finding, quite by accident, the pet she had always wanted. Plus three more! It’s almost Spring break and adventurous thirteen-year-old Megan Thompson finds four tiny day-old kittens in the park and makes a decision on the spot that will turn her life upside-down. What does a young girl do who has been told by her parents over and over again that she may not have a pet? In Megan’s mind, there is no question. She must save these motherless newborns, even if it means keeping them a secret from her mom and dad. The next five weeks are an exhausting blur of vet visits, endless cycles of feeding schedules, household chores, homework and sneaking around, but Megan has never been happier in her whole life. The kittens grow quickly and begin to venture out into the world beyond the closet. Megan knows it is only a matter of time before she must tell her parents about her secret. Fate steps in and her secret is discovered. What will happen to her precious babies now?

 About the Author

Pamela Foland grew up in Plano, Texas. Her love of animals started at a very young age. As a child, she was constantly bringing home stray dogs, and injured birds. She graduated from the University of Texas at Dallas with Bachelor of Science in Biology and a minor in Business in 2005. As an adult, her love of animals has only grown stronger. Pamela has worked in numerous pet hotels as a dog trainer and is certified to teach pet first aid and CPR. All her experience with pets culminated four years ago when Pamela found and raised an abandoned litter of day-old kittens. Not able to part with any of these now-grown babies, Pamela enjoys going home to her ‘little munchkins’ every night. This experience gave Pamela the inspiration for her series debut, Megan’s Munchkins. Pamela will always have a special affinity with Megan, because of their shared experiences. There are few experiences in life more compelling than saving the life of another being.

My Review

5 stars

Megan wants a pet badly but her parents don’t think she is responsible enough for a pet. One day she discovers a box with four day old kittens in it. Without thinking twice Megan grabs the box and takes the orphans home. She researches kitten bottle feeding and care. She starts feeding them every four hours, takes them to the vets, and keeps them hidden from her parents. But kittens grow fast and it gets harder for Megan to keep them hidden from her parents.

I am a huge animal lover and foster kittens. I’ve had bottle babies and know personally how hard it is to feed them every four hours and to take care of them. I loved following along with Megan and cheered her as she stepped up and helped the orphans. Of course there is the worry that her parents won’t let her keep the kittens to keep you hoping things work out for Megan.

This is a great story for midgrade reader to adults. It reminded me of fostering myself and I was so proud of Megan for taking on this very challenging role. What a great way to teach kids about the responsibility of having a pet and even encourage them to talk with their parents about fostering! I loved this story and can’t wait to read others in the series.

Book Description:

When budding historian Donnie Ray Cuinn stumbles upon an old letter in the musty bowels of the Texas State Archives, he believes he has uncovered the true story of Sam Payne’s valiant, or perhaps not so valiant, capture of Mexican leader Santa Anna during the Battle of San Jacinto. Cuinn’s findings are published in a local magazine. But the article eventually becomes fodder in the gubernatorial race between Democratic upstart Bob Braeswood and Republican favorite Sam Eben Payne V, the great-great-grandson of the Texas hero. Braeswood is intent on exploiting the past, while Payne will do anything to suppress it. In the ensuing battle, Donnie finds his beliefs, not to mention his relationships, stretched to the limit in the first novel of the Donnie Ray Cuinn series.

Meet the Author:

BOYD TAYLOR lives in Austin, Texas with his wife and their Havanese dog Toby. Necessities is the fourth novel in the Donnie Ray Cuinn series. In a former life, Boyd was a lawyer and a corporate officer. A native of Temple, Texas, he graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a B.A. in government and an LL.B. from the law school.

Boyd’s first novel “Hero” was prescient in its story about fake news. His second novel, “The Antelope Play,” dealt with drug trafficking in the Texas Panhandle, an unfortunately accurate forecast. The third, “The Monkey House”, involved commercial development of a large green space in the center of Austin, all too familiar to Austin residents. Whether his upcoming novel “Necessities” predicts future events with the accuracy of the earlier books remains to be seen.

Donnie Cuinn is a history graduate that has discovered a document that paints the historical Texas hero Sam Payne in a negative light during the Battle of San Jacinto and the capture of Santa Anna. Normally an article like this would not really make a difference in life. Except Donnie finds himself in the middle of a gubernatorial race with the great-great grandson of Sam Payne V. Sam’s opponent is quick to smear Sam’s name in the mud and Sam is going to make Donnie retract his story one way or another.

Donnie doesn’t seem like much when you first start reading the story. But I have to say he made me start cheering for him when Sam attempts to force him to retract the story. This is where he starts to shine, I just love someone that is not willing to be bullied into hiding the truth. And Cecilia, talk about a strong willed woman, I hope he keeps her around.

I really enjoyed this story. I loved how Donnie stood his ground against Sam. I really enjoyed learning more about his birth mother the more we went along. That really added to Donnie’s story. I think this is a great start to the series and I can’t wait to see where it goes from here.
